Comic-Con: SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Panel Recap; First Images of Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron

     July 23, 2011

As you may or may not know, there are roughly a bajillion Snow White projects currently in development. While some are further along than others, one of the most high profile adaptations is Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron. Sanders and the actors were all present today for the film’s panel in Hall H, where we got our first look at what to expect from the film (hint: it’s epic, dark, and gritty).

Hit the jump for my full recap of the Snow White and the Huntsman panel, plus the first images from the film.

chris-hemsworth-snow-white-and-the-huntsman-imageModerator Dave Karger introduced director Rupert Sanders and producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel. When asked what it was that appealed to him about the Snow White story, Roth said he wanted to come up with an idea that everybody knows and find some deep seeded emotional connection to it. He wanted to do a modern version of a story that has emotional roots. Patel said Sanders was the first director he had in mind when he started to develop the project.

When asked how Universal’s film differs from Relativity’s Snow White project, Roth said they’re very different pieces. He said Snow White and the Huntsman is on the scale of Lord of the Rings, and it’s a “tough, rough male and female action movie.” He said Relativity’s film looks to be quite a bit softer. He brought up Armageddon and Deep Impact, and said they opened seven weeks apart and both did really well. He did some research and said he found that people were more likely to see Armageddon if they had seen Deep Impact. He said the 10 weeks that lie between the Snow White films is “a lifetime” in movie time.

They then showed a clip reel of commercials directed by Sanders, including Call of Duty: Black Ops and Halo 3, which the audience responded to enthusiastically (because everybody loves commericals).

snow-white-and-the-huntsman-image-sam-claflinSanders said he initially wanted to create a war movie with his first foray into feature films, but he said he loves the epic scope of Snow White. He said what he does best is create very large landscapes that are full of emotion. He said to work from one of the classics is a great way to lose his cinematic virginity.

Castmembers Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, and Charlize Theron then came onstage. Stewart said their Snow White is kind of the people’s leader. Theron said the actors have only met each other briefly, since filming doesn’t start until next week, but she thinks Stewart is gonna give her a run for her money, adding “And I’m ready for it bitch, let’s go.”

Hemsworth was asked what it’s like to be in such huge movies all of a sudden. He said the take on Huntsman is different from the Snow White we’ve grown up with, and is an epic version that’s dark and gritty.

charlize-theron-snow-white-and-the-huntsman-imageSanders then revealed some images of the cast in their costumes as well as some test footage he put together rather quickly with different actors to give the audience an idea of what the film will be like. They shot the footage in three days on a ranch. What we saw was actually really cool. It had an almost Guillermo del Toro or Tarsem Singh feel to it, as it’s a bit stylized and full of strange mystical creatures (a guy covered in white, with pointed ears, crawled out of a raven), though it’s grounded a bit more in reality than del Toro or Singh’s work. I was actually pretty impressed with what Sanders put together with such little time, and I think with an actual budget and the film’s stars this could end up being a fairly epic and dark fantasy film.

When asked about what it’ll be like to work onset, Stewart gave her answer saying she’s ready to go and work hard and Theron replied, “Well I’m an Oscar winner so…” The crowd erupted with laughter. The cast seems to get along really well, despite having only known each other briefly, and they were all really funny. To be honest, Stewart seemed to be having much more fun on this panel than the Breaking Dawn panel earlier in the week.

Sanders recounted going to see Stewart to talk about the movie on the set of Twilight. He walked into her trailer and she was chewing on a cigarette while dressing her own wound on her stomach.

They showed images of the cast in costumes. First up were the dwarves (of which there are eight). The faces of the actors looked like they have been digitally manipulated or put onto other bodies, but I couldn’t tell if they were little people or not. Their garb was gritty and worn, and they kind of looked like a ragtag band of warriors. They didn’t specify if the actors would be digitally manipulated in the final film or if this was just for the costume test purposes.

Kristen Stewart Snow White and the HuntsmanNext was Sam Clafin as The Prince, who was done up in super shiny armor and would not be out of place in Lord of the Rings. Hemsworth as the huntsman looked decidedly badass, with worn and beaten-up clothing and a very big axe swung over his shoulder. Theron as the Queen looked dastardly. She had triangle-shaped sequins all over her dress and a super high collar, with an incredibly violent-looking dagger in her hands. Finally, Stewart looked much more like Joan of Arc than a Disney princess. She wielded a big shield, and was covered in raggedy armor.

Asked about what drew them to the project, Theron cited the fact that George Miller’s Mad Max film was pushed back and she was left without a project. She said she liked the cast, Roth, Sanders, and the idea they had of turning the classic tale upside down. She said she’s playing the Queen as a serial killer.

Overall, this panel gave a much better idea of what Snow White and the Huntsman will be. While two Snow White reboots seems excessive, I have a feeling Tarsem Singh’s version will be wildy different than this one. Huntsman looks to be very dark and super gritty (a hard PG-13 for sure), and White is more a warrior than a spurned princess. The scope is very epic as well, drawing lots of similarities to Lord of the Rings. I was pretty impressed with Sanders’ vision and I’m eager to see what he has in store.

Here’s all four images. Click for high resolution.  Finally, here’s the official synopsis:

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her.  But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) who was dispatched to kill her.  Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.

The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

      Holy %$#*….This IS really IMPRESSIVE!!!

I am so happy that they are making Snow white fierce, the maiming that was done by Disney will be corrected.

People are still brainwashed into thinking that the origins of the tale is happy-woodland-creature duet-sunshiny…

Glad to see that this Snow white will be a fierce warrior. GIRL POWER ^_^

      • lmao

yeah. i am woman, hear me roar.

  • vfdgsdf

Is there something i don’t know about Snow White lore that puts the title character in battle armor and suggests shes in a War? Or are they just trying to take it to a different place because they are up against another Snow white film. This just baffles me and im sure it will baffle many others.

    • The Train!

yeah, i’m with you on this. i’m not aware of any interpretation of the original fairy tale that opens the door for where they’re going with it.

i’m wondering not only HOW they’ll explain the connection, but WHY they even made the connection. in other words, how does this interpretation of the tale make us go back and rethink the original and the Disney versions?

and in terms of their bottom line–yeah, i think the audience will be confused, and that could be a problem. i know i’m lost.

    • lex

i dont know why your confused i blame disney they took it and made it all sunshine and rainbows. the original lore of snow white at least the brother grimms version very much so had goblins and was very dark dont expect singing and snow white being weak

  • Pills26

Oh hai Gondorian Soldier! What are you doing out of Lord of The Rings?

    …..oh wait, that’s kristin stewart.

  • nelson

    prince looks like james franco

    • Errol

I agree, totally looks like James Franco! The first time I looked at the picture before reading the name I was thinking ‘I didn’t know James Franco was in this.’ :-D

  • t

i doubt anyone will be confused. once the trailer comes out, the marketing campaign, everyone will have a pretty good idea what it’s all about.

    it’s a re-interpretation of a classic tale. that’s it.

the director’s commercial reel is amazing. he won’t have any trouble with the visuals.

Wow, i have gone from being apathetic towards this to putting it on my must see list.

Kristen seems like she could play a badass, it could suit her edginess. Charlize looks suitably intimidating, Chris looks HAWT and Sam looks ready to battle.

The dwarf casting is outstanding. I mean…. no words!

    Well played Universal!

  • JoJo

This is soooooooooo weird. This movie should be directed by Tarsem Singh, while the other movie should be directed by the guy directing this version of Snow White.

This is a film based on the idea that Theron is jealous of Stewart’s beauty. I am confused.

    • nina

actually if you go by the grimm tale, it’s not just beauty, but birthright and youth too.

  • a.j.

snow white in armor = fail

    • Scared for Movies

Couldn’t agree more. It’s funny how this tries to copy a Lord of the Rings vibe and all of a sudden people are now interested in seeing it. This will not be good and the only reason it’s being called Snow White is for brand recognition. Oh how awesome will it be to watch Kristen Stewart act as a monotone badass warrior? Not awesome at all is my guess.

      • Wheatly

I hope you realize that Disney Snow White is not the original. This one will be more like the original fairy tail than the fluffy Disney cartoon.

      • Scared for Movies

The original? I don’t care what version Disney made. I’m not comparing the two. I’m saying that the shield Stewart is using looks like it was stolen directly out of Lord of the Rings. We’re going to have to watch a terribly wooden actress who weighs 80lbs soaking wet and buy her as an ass kicking warrior. No thanks.

So Roth is ready comparing it to Lord of the Rings. Really now. Good luck with that.

  • Matt

I ain’t gonna lie… i’m more interested in this now than I was before these images came out.

The Snow White picture we saw from the other movie made me think that studio was just trying to make a Snow White version of that terrible Alice in Wonderland movie that just came out.

the mirror on the wall is going to have an easy job chosing between theron and stewart…..

    • bailey

ha! hey jim, google “charlize before she was famous” to see her pre-surgery-doesn’t even look like the same face, girl got a shizzload of surgery to look as beautiful as she does. Which makes her the perfect queen for this role, and Kristen the perfect young thing who is youthful in her beauty.

      • ht

You’re crazy, she was always a beauty.

  • bernard

There is something wrong.. something really wrong in this Snow White adaptation if the wicked queen/stepmom is actually alot more beautiful than the snow white itself. It makes “mirror mirror on the wall, whose the fairiest of them all” quite redundant isn’t?

    • Wheatly

No, I would gladly take Kristen over Charlize or pretty much anyone else. I think she is stunningly beautiful. Your shallow post is missing the point though, the fairest of them all was never just about physical beauty.

      • Scared for Movies

Your defending Stewart pretty hard. Are you a closet Twilight fan?

    • Elle

Kristen Stewart holds her own, even beside Charlize Theron (judging from the most recent photos at their Comic-Con panel). They are both beautiful, but I find Stewart to be more attractive, if less conventionally beautiful.

      • Liam

i agree. I don’t really know much about Stewart but she certainly is holding her own against Charlize in the comic con panel.

        Movie looks interesting.

Universal did well by making clear that it is markedly different to the comedy version. I’m on board

    • donnaandi

You are so right! But I guess if a FAIRYTALE gets ruined, that’s the way to do it. Pretty sad to even compare the two.

    • rory

the grimm tale isn’t about just who’s the prettiest, the fairest of the land had a deeper connotation. FAirest implied status, beauty, and age, and in the tale the queen is jealous of the princess’s blooming beauty and her right to the throne once she is of age. Trying to turn this into a cock fight between two good looking women, give me a break. You’d chat either one up at a bar any night over typing comments on a movie nerd site.

  • rocky

Fanboys hate for Twilight clouds their minds in terms of Stewart’s beauty.

I’m definitely checking this out. Why can’t people get that this is a new version of SW just like Singh’s probably, though Singh’s is supposed to be comical. I’ll probably check both out.

So I was also thinkin who would chose Kristen over Charlize, Charlize remains a stunning beauty and I dont think K is ugly or anything she is quite cute but then I read that the queen hunts young maidens so she can get their youth not their beauty so she can remain young and beautiful…and when Snow White gets to be a fine nice young maiden she becomes her target too, with that said now I do get the casting :D overall I would rather watch this version os SW, the cast is awesome just look at all the dwarves…
Chris looks amazingly hawt as always <3 he will be a badass Hunstman

    • KATE

I don’t think fairest of them all only mean physical beauty. SW is supposed to be very kind hearted with a strong sense of herself.
IDK, this version sounds interesting to me and i am gonna definitely checking it out .

      • KATE

      • malia

YES. Thank you. “Fairest” isn’t about who is prettiest but who is fairest both on the outside and on the inside. The queen is beautiful outside, but ugly inside. That’s the point. People trying to judge Kristen’s looks are being lame.

Charlize circa 2001 was hotter than Kristen. Charlize 2011 though, naw. She’s been messing with her face, it’s got that desperate housewives look to her nowadays, too tight and pulled and botoxed. Even on the panel yesterday from the pictures, she looked like she was trying to be the prettiest girl in the room all made up with a see through top and Kristen was in sneakers and jeans but still hot. This is great though, the queen is suppossed to be vain too, so I think it will only help the movie that charlize seems to be intent of holding her own next to someone half her age. Makes for a good catfight. lol

Whoever said that this movie is going to be true to the Grimm stories is an idiot. The Grimm stories did not have as a warrior princess and it does include the dwarfs, though in the Grimm tales they do not have any names, that did not happen until the 1905 play. At this rate the Disney version is going to be more honest to the Grimm thane this movie. I will not be watching. This is going to be a bigger piece of crap than Alice in Wondland
