Universal Moves Forward with Sequel to SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

While Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman continues to battle for more box office earnings, Universal is already moving forward with the sequel. With the “origin” story in the Snow White franchise thus set up, it only goes to follow that the next chapter will be fast-tracked. Universal has set David Koepp (Spider-Man) to write the script. Hopefully, the sequel will have a more cohesive storyline, better dialogue and provide a payoff to its promises, something we discussed at length on last week’s podcast. Sanders may or may not be back, but stars Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth are optioned for two more films. Hit the jump for more on the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman.

Deadline reports that Universal is anxious to move forward with the Snow White and the Huntsman follow up. The current iteration was a film we were all looking forward to seeing, but ended up being disappointed to varying degrees. Partly to blame was Relativity Media’s push of their own take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror. Then, having a debut director who cut his teeth in commercials didn’t help, although I was impressed by the array of visual displays at work in the film. What killed this picture were the three disparate storylines: an epic rebellion, a fantasy romance and a coming of age tale; none of the three came together in a unifying way that paid off in the end. That’s unfortunate because I think we all agreed that there was a decent story in there somewhere; it could have been afforded more time to develop. There is an opportunity to do that with a sequel…but is a sequel necessary? In my opinion, no; there’s not much story left to tell and not much reason to find one. And for all of Koepp’s hits (Mission: Impossible, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man), his more recent misses (War of the Worlds, Zathura: A Space Adventure, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) give me reason to pass. Why would Universal waste resources on a sequel when it the first one didn’t deliver? $250 million on this one and it will be very lucky to make $400 million by the end of its run.

A sequel for SW is sure a waste of time, but I wouldn´t say that “War of the Worlds” and the fifth Indy flicks are “misses”. Gee, if movies that earns 300+ millions are misses, I´d like to miss a lot! LOL… just saying it.

But I have no idea what direction Universal may go with the franchise. Maybe Snow White and the Huntsman vs. the Beast?

I am a huge of Kristen, but this movie was a disaster. I can’t believe I see people tweeting saying that it was one of the best movies they had seen in a whille, really people??

So no, a sequel is not necessary.

I dont know if a sequel is a good idea or not. I saw this movie and I think it is a decent movie. I would love to see Charlize Theron again. I dont know how are they going to do that, but i would love to see her again. She was awesome.

  I agree they should have a sequel where Charlize Theron returns because inthe end she said shes lived too many lives and they could have her return to kill snow white and regan her thron

i’m surprised, i mean snow white isn’t exactly lighting up the box office, it had a $170 mil budget, and it has done $118 mil worldwide so far, uni will probably see 50% of that. they have to contend with Prometheus this weekend, it could drop off 50-60%.

It’s because of the foreign box office. Overseas, it opened to bigger numbers than Twilight and The Hunger Games during the first weekend, and that’s without being in Russia and Japan. The film was kind of a shame…the script just didn’t make any sense (neither Snow White or the Huntsman had any real development as characters). I really dug Michael Poland’s analysis-that they were trying to go for an examination of sexuality-but the script just didn’t cut it. They had a good angle, with the whole “you don’t know what it’s like to get old”…but they never expanded on that. To be frank, I do think a lot of people didn’t give the film a fair chance either because they were on fairy tale overload.

There is no need for a Snow White sequel. Leave it as it is. I liked it.

  I also like “War of the Worlds.” Having recently read the classic novel, I can see how faithfully Spielberg adapted many of the book’s story elements while also updating it.

Look no further for the problem with Hollywood these days. “oh yay, we broke even, let’s make another!” No one is willing to take a risk on anything. What is the point of wasting money on a sequel to this? Develop something original. what happened to the 5-10 mil movies that used to run the box office every week? Unless you perform with a billion dollar opening weekend you’re nothing now. Something’s gotta give.

I didn’t think there was all that much wrong with the movie…I actually thought it was pretty awesome, I thought it was far better than Prometheus, but should there be a sequel to snow white? ummm, no.

I definitely would love to see the sequel. You can dissect the movie and analyze it all you want but I enjoyed it immensely and I believe that a lot of twilight fans feel the same way. Just because you didnt particularly enjoy it or perhaps it wasn’t up to par with what you’d vouch for as a great flick does not mean that everyone else feels the same way. It has only been the 2nd week and the film seems to be hitting their numbers. I think Hemsworth is awesome and Stewart is just a sensation isn’t she. I’m seriously dying to see their love story in snow white develop so yes please bring on the sequel! Universal knows what sells and obviously that is all that’s important really, money, honey.

Although I do enjoy your typical Oscar winning flicks, you know, the slow boring ones with a lot of talking and minimal action, sometimes I need a serious dose of actual entertainment. SWATH was such a visual treat. It’s a fantasy thing, a goth thing, a younger generation thing. Yes, it’s not an Oscar but it sure is a nice break from it! It sells, as twilight did so let it be. It wasn’t THAT bad. I’ve seen a lot worse lately (MIB 3, the Avengers)

It was okay. I agree with the article in that the three themes didn’t connect the way they should have. Stewart and Theron are beautiful on the screen while Hemsworth and Claflin provided some great eye candy, but a sequel? Unless the dialogue and plot are better, I say leave it be.

Would love to see more of Snow White and William. Huntsman is more a big bro . He ia great as a role of a protector but too matured as Snow White’s love partner. Anyway, cant wait for the next sequel with more fights towards a great love story.

I will pay whatever it takes to see another movie with Chris Hemsworth in it. Bring on another sequal or two, as long as he is there.
