Just ahead of its debut as the Cinefest Oz's opener, the first Son of a Gun images have landed online.  Julius Avery's directorial debut stars Brenton Thwaites (The Giver) as JR, a young man who becomes a protégé of Australia's most notorious criminal Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor).  "Locked up for a minor crime, JR quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. There is no survival guide. Keep your head down, do your time, get out. Protection – if you can get it – is paramount."  These images don't look like they show much of the lockup, but I'm still intrigued by the premise, and hopefully we'll get to see the film in the U.S. soon.

Hit the jump to check out the Son of a Gun images and poster.  The film also stars Alicia Vikander, Jacek Koman, Matt Nable, and Tom Budge.  Son of a Gun opens in Australia in October, and although A24 has the U.S. distribution rights, they haven't set a domestic release date yet.
