Sundance 2014: First Images from SONG ONE, WHIPLASH, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, and FISHING WITHOUT NETS

Following the unveiling of the lineup for the 2014 Sundance Film Festival competition categories, the fest has released first look images and synopses for some of the aforementioned films.  Briefly:

  • Song One – Written and directed by Kate Barker-Froyland; starring Anne Hathaway, Johnny Flynn, Mary Steenburgen, and Ben Rosenfield.
  • Whiplash – Written and directed by Damien Chazelle; starring Miles Teller and JK Simmons.
  • Dear White People – Written and directed by Justin Simien; starring Tyler Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, and Brandon Bell.
  • Fishing Without Nets – Directed by Cutter Hodierne; starring Abdikani Muktar, Abdi Siad, Abduwhali Faarah, Abdikhadir Hassan, Reda Kateb, and Idil Ibrahim.

Song One / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Kate Barker-Froyland) — Estranged from her family, Franny returns home when an accident leaves her brother comatose. Retracing his life as an aspiring musician, she tracks down his favorite musician, James Forester. Against the backdrop of Brooklyn’s music scene, Franny and James develop an unexpected relationship and face the realities of their lives. Cast: Anne Hathaway, Johnny Flynn, Mary Steenburgen, Ben Rosenfield.

Whiplash / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Damien Chazelle) — Under the direction of a ruthless instructor, a talented young drummer begins to pursue perfection at any cost, even his humanity. Cast: Miles Teller, JK Simmons.

Dear White People / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Justin Simien) — Four black students attend an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over an “African American” themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film explores racial identity in postracial America while weaving a story about forging one’s unique path in the world. Cast: Tyler Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon Bell.

Fishing Without Nets / U.S.A., Somalia, Kenya (Director: Cutter Hodierne, Screenwriters: Cutter Hodierne, John Hibey, David Burkman) — A story of pirates in Somalia told from the perspective of a struggling, young Somali fisherman. Cast: Abdikani Muktar, Abdi Siad, Abduwhali Faarah, Abdikhadir Hassan, Reda Kateb, Idil Ibrahim.

    You have got to be shitting me? There is a film called “Dear White People”? Really? Sorry not looking to start a racial debate but honestly I couldn’t help myself after I read the title and then saw what it was about.

      Don’t care for the title either, but with everyone sporting blackface all of a sudden, the plot sounds very plausible.

        Well… Eddie Murphy, Dave Chapelle, Key & Peele, Eddie Griffin, etc. do the same and don’t get me wrong I find it hilarious because they are all great comedians but you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Just my opinion.

        I didn’t realize white people were marginalized and enslaved for hundreds of years. Why should they be offended if we’re not.
