Paramount has released the first trailer for their upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The film follows Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he tries to save the world alongside his human pal Tom (James Marsden) and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
It’s very easy to be cynical about a Sonic the Hedgehog movie, but honestly my biggest complaint is how mundane it looks. I don’t really need Sonic in the real world when his original games had such stunning environments. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see Marble Zone or Star Light Zone realized on the big screen? Instead we get…the Pacific Northwest. It’s beautiful country, but not fantastical in the way Sonic could be. Instead, it seems like they’re pretty much playing it as safe as possible and this will be a PG adventure movie that trades on nostalgia. I honestly don’t know if kids today even care about Sonic (unlike Mario or Pokemon, the Sonic brand has weakened over the years), but they’re getting a movie about the video game character whether they like it or not.

Here’s the official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog:
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
