Sony Attempts World Domination with Adaptation of the Board Game RISK

I haven’t played “Risk” in quite some time so all I really know about it is the “Seinfeld” episode where Kramer and Newman are playing it on the subway and Kramer says the Ukraine is weak and then a Ukrainian man smashes their game.  I was still puzzled how you could bring a game with such tiny pieces with you.  I guess that’s TV magic.  Sony is now attempting some movie magic and will adapt Hasbro’s “Risk”.  Hit the jump and roll the dice so your troops can attack or something.

Like Peter Berg’s adaptation of “Battleship” for Universal, and adaptation of “Risk” isn’t the craziest idea in Hollywood.  They’re just war movies with brand names on them.  It’s not the most creative leap but I don’t think anything wrong with a naval battle movie or a strategic war game.  There’s potential in each and I’d certainly be more interested to see a “Risk” movie than one based on “Ouija”, another Hasbro board game (and it is a game, not some mystical spirit link) getting the movie treatment.

There are no controls in this forum to make letters as big as we want so I will just do this one.

Risk has never settled on a specific time period, so maybe this will be a two-way street. The board game could get a movie themed version that ties in to whatever world war (fantasy or otherwise) the movie covers. The latest RISK version is SO improved over the old ones (it ends, for instance) but it is just as generic as far as theme goes.

It’s really NOT that great an idea, honestly. Ouija is not a board _game_ per se, but… that works in its benefit as far as adaptation to a movie goes. Battleship is a great premise because it is so focused. I’m not sure what I’d do with a movie about World Domination. I guess you could have a memoirs of a military leader format. It just wouldn’t work with a soldiers on the ground story, it’s more about the overall sweep of the war. Not sure how that becomes a compelling movie.

I will say I liked the moments in Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s cut?) that showed some of the planning via “toys”. It was brief but if played right maybe I could get into that. I don’t know. Maybe an Art of War approach — the book, not the movie!

Either way, bet on Australia winning.
