Sony’s PlayStation 4 is due to arrive Stateside in less than two weeks, but it’s not just the $399 price tag that gamers will have to factor in.  For those who enjoy playing online games, Sony will be charging a monthly fee of $9.99 for access to online games through the PlayStation Plus portal.  Gamers can also pay $17.99 for three months or $49.99 for a year, but no matter which plan you pick, it’s going to cost you to play games online.  Hit the jump for more.

Click here to pre-order the PlayStation 4 from Amazon.  You will not be charged until the console ships.

sony-playstation-4Here’s the breakdown of prices (via THR):

The PS4 goes on sale on Nov. 15 in the U.S. for $399, on Nov. 29 in Europe for €399, and on Feb. 22, 2014 in Japan for 39,980 yen.

Online gaming on the PS3 and portable PS Vita consoles are currently free. Monthly charges in the U.S. will be $9.99 monthly, $17.99 for three months or $49.99 for a year. The monthly fee in Europe will be €6.99, with similar discounts for longer plans. In Japan, the monthly fees are set to be 500 yen.

Here’s an explanation from Sony in response to an IGN story on the monthly fees:

When PS4 launches on November 15, PlayStation Plus will continue to be offered at US $49.99 for a year membership. For less than $5 a month, PS Plus members will have access all the benefits across PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. At E3 earlier this year, we introduced a new PS Plus membership option for 30 days in North America and Europe ($9.99 /€6.99), available now in the PlayStation Store. PS4 gamers who aren’t PS Plus members will be able to enjoy a variety of network services, including access to video/TV services, select free-to-play games and sharing with friends.

ps+ is only for online multiplayer, so the apps are free. unlike xbox you need GOLD in order to use netflix. SONY DOMINATION!!! xbox go home

    • Romsy

Yeah, you have to love one and hate the other! Choose a side and just ignore any games on the other system that you might want to play! Then post dumb comments on the internet about how much you love the system you chose!

      • Calderon

Yeah, you’re not allowed to have opinions, no matter how polarized or nuanced.

    • Gray

What a boring person… If you enjoy something, enjoy it. Don’t make other people feel bad ’cause you have an opinion. Fuck yooooooooooourself.

  • Chris

OH WOW some news that everyone knew from the day PS4 was announced

    • SL85948594

So wait… your upset they reported this news?

      • muchrockness

it’s not news- it’s “today i learned” material

  • bombinUSA

LOL, so essentially the ps4 will cost way more than the xbox one by the end of its run. brutal, and you sony fanboy dorks that you were getting a good deal. bwahahhha, sony doesn’t have a single good exclusive, its gonna cost more, doesn’t have any technological advances like the xbox one and the online play is garbage….wow microsoft just kicked sony’s ass into oblivion. hahahaha.

    • Lex Walker

Wow, reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit. Both Sony and Microsoft charge for their online play service. Xbox’s even costs $10 more.

      • bombinUSA

        lol @ your sony bias

    • consolereally

my PC will whip your xbox 1, 2, and 3 put together (you can throw a PS3 and 4 in there too). So BWAHAHHAHAHA!!!

      • bombinUSA

      • Gray

Wow, how it is in 2004?

Oh look, now you are all friends. Awwww.

      • ponchostalker

You’re right, pc is awesome tbh (no sarcasm). ps lol @ everyone who thinks console is better, try getting mods on a console, lolol

      • a-guy-with-sense

It’s actually pretty easy you. And to the elitist cunt above (not poncho, but consolereally) Stop being such a massive faggot and play videogames as videogames, who gives two fucks what medium it’s on.

    • Deathbyskullf***

How is it going to cost more? The Xbox one already cost $100 more and you still need Gold. By and by, xbox one still costs $100 more as PS+ is the equivalent to Gold. And no… no Sony bias as I intend on purchasing both. But you sir are wrong.

Furthermore, Microsoft made the same mistake the Ps3 made… custom made chips manufactured in house which necessitates a higher hardware price point for a longer time, and mandatory game installs. Meaning you must take up hard drive space and take extended time in order to play your games on the box. You should probably do your homework before you spew your verbal diarhea as your clearly off base on costs. And beyond that, quite a many industry analyst predict Sony to dominate the early portion of this console generation and to overall win this war.

Anyone standing only on the House of Microsoft really should not want to only support their product as they tipped their hand about what they intend to do. There are advantages to their idealogy of digital download gaming, but it will neuter quite a bit of the gaming world. The large portion of gamers cannot pay prices for brand new games all the time. The gaming business depends on retailers that resell used games to keep player population higher. By neutralizing players ability to buy, sell and trade used games(which IS what Microsoft would like to do and had intended to do with the Xbox One) they will hurt the gaming industry. Many gamers NEED the ability to trade their games to purchase new ones.

Im a gamer. So I like to play the best games available on whichever console its best to play on. Unless it was an exclusive, when it came to games that were on both the Xbox and Ps3 it was usually better on the Box. Not cuz it was a better system because technologically speaking the Ps3 is actually a superior piece of hardware(tho not vastly). But rather because the box was easier to program for. That is not the case in the upcoming generation. Microsoft has not been treating their third party developers well as of late. A lesson Sony learned about 10 years ago and has since spent much time and resources to repair said damage. This is why Bungie is now developing for the PS4. If YOU are a true gamer, you want both systems to succeed. Anyone who wants the best possible games, and the industry to thrive is a fool if they want either one to fail. Its not something that the industry can endure and hope to take chances on new or exciting ways to make and play games. We will ONLY get sequels and games the industry can count on making money, rather than new IPs that will entice gamers new and old to take risks on and spend their money.

All that being said, it may just be fact reporting in this article, however, I think its shoddy and poorly done. As the article is designed as if the information being given is new news, and something that is some sort of horrible thing that Sony is doing. They told us months ago(as many of yall have already pointed out) and beyond that. Anyone whos been playing Xbox for the last 8years or so have already been paying this kinda monies. How about curbing the structure of the article more akin to “Sony will follow in the footsteps of Microsoft and begin charging a monthly fee for online gaming.” or “Unlike the Playstation 3 where Sony allowed gamers to play online for free with the option for reduced rate content with their PS+ program. Playstation will now require players to pay for the plus program to play online like Microsoft has been for the better part of the last decade.” Just seems misguided to distribute information in such a manner so uninformed consumers will either feel like they are being duped or that this fee will be something that is not a factor from its competition. Poor reporting.

Whatever you say nancy. Dont give a rats ass… others did and know full well that yes… you did get pwned. Atleast we will all agree with that.

Oh… and btw If you in fact did not read it as you claim, then what would be the purpose in trying to sling anything back my way? I could have been agreeing with you… but since we all know thats NOT the fact, including yourself, its good to know that you have absolutely no defense and I systematically shredded you. Dont try to troll with the big boys when you cant even get out of the minor leagues.

      • bombinUSA

bwahahahahahaa. i win again, god you suck at the internet.
say something controversial or void of thought, generate a long winded worthless diatribe..and then not even attempt to give any credence to it. haha im so fucking awesome.

      • Deathbyskullf***

See… proved my point. I see it took you a couple of days to thumb through a dictionary and a thesaurus to compile what you deem to be a worthwhile comeback. “tl;dr” again? LOL nice.
I dig how your comeback to my dismantling of your viewpoint is to claim that it has no credence lol Void of thought as well? Debateable… but considering most of it was merely fact checking, it neednt carry the weight of heavy opinion. Win? Lose? Apparently your trolling has brought new lows upon your life. Disoriented by your attempts at basic math(proven by your inability to understand what is cheaper or more expensive in regards to the subject at hand) and your clear confusion about what to do when someone tosses long fact based material discrediting your misguided opinions, and having to take time to look up half the words they used because theyre outside your reading level. I know I know. With illiteracy at an all time high youre wanting to say “atleast I CAN read”. Yes… and good for you little one. But most of us gave up thumb sucking, bed wetting and breast feeding a LONG time ago. You can too.Sore subject? I know you hold the crown for being king of the mercy fuck, but that and the breast feeding is between you and your mom. Probably not something you wanna announce.

Dance little troll… I await to see what verbal jabs you shall spin this time to make you feel like your insignificant life is valid and ok.

      • bombinUSA

bwahhahahahaha god you’re an idiot. haah

      • Clement

I’m so glad that you’re an Xbox person. If you owned a Playstation I think that I would have to destroy mine. You know, to avoid the association with you.

      • Deathbyskullf***

:D Validation that you cannot win… Perhaps you should gimme your address to send you some tissues to wipe away the tears. Mommy cant comfort those harsh truths huh? Or is it that when you go to her for comfort its too hard to fight those urges? You give new meaning to “Hail to the King”. U mad?

    • OhDawg

      Math is HARD.

    • Gray

I’m a huge fan of Xbox and feel as though, personally, the Playstation is an inferior console… however to shame them for enjoying something is callous. Grow up, pull your thumb out of your arse and realise there’s more important things going on.

    • Gehennah

Um, the PS4 is still a hundred bucks cheaper, and they still charge to play online too.

So I wouldn’t quite say that Xbox kicked Sony’s but on this one.

      • Steven Thomas

the only reason the ps4 is cheaper is because its not coming with its xbox kinect equivalent, the PS4 camera.

  • Andres

Welcome to June 2013 Collider. Bravo.

    • OhDawg

      This. Old news is old.

ha ha PS4 – what a joke. Xbox Live created the console mulitplayer with HALO 2. Xbox One, Xbox WON!

    • Deathbyskullf***

In regards to Halo 2… that would actually be that BUNGIE created console multiplayer. Tho that is debateable… and without the success of the Playastation, Microsoft would never have thrown their hat into the gaming console ring. Which in turn we owe to Nintendo for bailing on the partnership with Sony.

Anyone that wants either system to fail is a moron…

  • MrBurrrns

This is a really poorly written article. Not only is the information old, but it’s also very one sided and biased, offering no comparison to the Xbox side of things. You can do better than that Collider.

  • Dev1359

    PC master race

  • TBMachine

PS+ also includes a ton of free games, so the $50/year is TOTALLY worth it, and I don’t even play online games much. Doesn’t XBOX Live also charge a monthly service? Why is this article here again?

    • Gehennah

Exactly, and I do hope that they continue offering the free or deeply discounted games with PS+.

And some people are acting like this is new news? This has been openly known for quite some time now.

  • tarek

    I don’t care, I use my PS3 as a blu-ray player.

    • bombinUSA

i use my ps3 as a door stop.

      • tarek

  • dick

    lick my asshole

  • honey

now i am not going to buy ps4 i will use only my wii u

  • me

Back to pc gaming. Games aren’t worth subscriptions.

neither is paying for the internet then paying to use the internet on a console I just bought.

Maybe cutdown and the pay us/pay us/pay us/pay us/pay us/pay us/pay us. Now you can play for a month!

  • korvgubbe

I’m prized out. cant afford playing online neither buying games.

  • Brandon McFerrin

So, buy the console for $400, buy a game for $60, pay for a monthly internet connection ($20-100), pay Sony $10 a month to be able to use your connection. I understand Xbox has already been charging to play multiplayer, but that doesn’t make it any less of a ripoff. I know some of you will defend Sony, but why? They aren’t your friends, they are just out to get your money. I can understand charging people for certain services not available to the general public, but in essence, you are paying them to allow your internet connection to connect to their machine. Imagine if you had to pay your computer company to use the internet with your computer? Think about it.

  • ponchostalker

    this is fucking outrageous
