Soon We May Be Celebrating INDEPENDENCE DAY Twice; Sequels to the 1996 Will Smith Film in the Works?

IESB is reporting that 20th Century Fox has set the wheels in motion to not only make Independence Day 2 but also an Independence Day 3, both starring Will Smith at Captain Steven Hiller.

According to their tipster, the studio has locked up the superstar to shoot both films back to back after whichever film he chooses to do next, be it Men in Black 3 or The City That Sailed. The writer and director of the original Independence Day, Roland Emmerich, will return too. Last year, he told Latino Review that the main hold up was Will Smith’s huge salary. Well, now thanks to James Cameron and his little film called Avatar, it seems the studio has decided to pay Will his asking price of over $20 million.

Hit the jump for more details.

Emmerich and his former producing partner Dean Devlin had an idea for a sequel to the 1996 mega blockbuster a while ago, but the duo went their separate ways after 2000s’ The Patriot. Now, according to the IESB source, Fox wants the film to shoot as early as next year, after Emmerich finishes his Shakespeare movie, Anonymous.

The big question for fans – and even more so for 20th Century Fox – is are audiences clamoring for a sequel to a 14 year old movie where, at the end, the planet was basically shot to hell? I mean – obviously the aliens could come back for revenge, but considering basically every single major city has been destroyed, where exactly could the story go? Would we go to their planet and wreak similar havoc?

Not to mention, part of what made Independence Day so entertaining (especially as it replays non-stop on TNT) are the comedic performances by Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Bill Pullman. Well, maybe not that last one.

I would like to see a sequel but with the supporting cast returning. Goldblum, Hirsch (who strangely I think looks younger doing recent episodes of 'Numbers' then he does in that movie), perhaps Pullman is they can devise a decent story for the ex-president.

I will probably only be interested in these if Will Smith returns (along with at least a few of the supporting cast) and only if they're named Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, respectively.

Cletus, that is the dumbest thing I've heard lol. This movie will probably stink simply because Roland Emmerich is incapable of making quality films now. I can see him overdoing the graphics on this thing and making Independence Day look like lan party for adobe nerds (2012).

    yay for terrible cinema!

    3D Bandwagon anyone?

I like the Idea of these films being called Veterans Day and Memorial Day, but I am not interested in seeing these even though they will undoubtedly be in 3D. I can't think of a story that would warrant a sequel so late after the last one let alone TWO!

Daayumm! I could go for a lil more id4, but i dont like Will Smith. If they make the films with different characters and a lil more serious tone than the first i'd be up for it. Stargate is my favorite emerich film.

I loved ID4 as a kid. Now, it's kinda bad.

I don't really see the point of this. Plus, they really lost me when i read Emmerich would be returning. Will Smith should have had a no EMMERICH clause in his contract.

Everybody insults Bill Pullman lately. I thought he was good in Independence day. I hope they find a part for him in the sequel
