Watch the First 12 Minutes of SOUND OF MY VOICE

     February 16, 2012

Just the other day we brought you the first two minutes of Sundance favorite Sound of My Voice, and now Fox Searchlight has released the first 12 minutes of the film online. This chunk makes up the first “chapter” of the movie, which centers on a couple and documentary filmmaking team who infiltrate a mysterious group with the intention of exposing their leader as a fraud. If you thought the first two minutes of the movie were ominous, things get significantly creepier as the sequence moves on. The film takes an intricate look inside cults, not dissimilar from Martha Marcy May Marlene, but Sound of My Voice looks to be taking a POV approach to the issue. I’m incredibly intrigued by the footage, especially by the final 10 seconds, and can’t wait to see more.

Hit the jump to watch the first 12 minutes of the film. The footage is also interspersed with interactive “hotspots” that lead to content hinting at story elements beyond this first chapter. Sound of My Voice stars Brit Marling and opens April 27th.

Here’s the synopsis for Sound of My Voice:

In SOUND OF MY VOICE, Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius), a couple and documentary filmmaking team, infiltrate a mysterious group led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie (Brit Marling). Intent on exposing her as a charlatan and freeing the followers from her grip, Peter and Lorna start to question their objective and each other as they unravel the secrets of Maggie’s underworld.

I want to like this. Really. I love this sort of thing. But I can’t get over how utterly contrived this 12-minute clip is. I haven’t seen this movie, but I can only guess it ends exactly like Another Earth…

With us not being sure if she’s from the future or not, but thinking it’s possible. The similarity to Another Earth being: she sees herself at the back door, so you’re not sure which planet they’re on etc. Solaris nailed a feeling with a similar ending many moons ago. Now this sort of thing is getting a bit common place. I hate the Brit Marling character in this so far. I’m sure you’re supposed to. But it’s also her acting. John Hawkes in Martha Marcy May Marlene. Now that’s how you pull that off. This one is just… eh.. like I said, contrived so far. Maybe the rest of the movie’s good. I want it to be, but we’ll have to see.

Yes, I know it could be her other self in Another Earth decided to come to Earth, being the alternative decision that her real self made. And I know it’s clear in Solaris that he is actually on Solaris and not at his father’s house. Just wanted to say that so some person doesn’t rip me for not understanding some ending. These ending’s can be cool. Take Shelter does it okay. Martha Marcy May Marlene even SORT OF does it. Sort of. And that was a fantastic film. But Marling’s potentially doing it twice with her first two buzzed about films. Noted, I haven’t seen the end yet, so I hope for the best. But this is all getting away from my initial and one complaint: this 12-minutes is contrived stuff. It almost feels like a parody of this sort of cult movie.

**being the alternative *to* the decision her real self ultimately made.**

Hey Dsimolke, go fuck yourself. If you have anything to say that might be “spoilerish”, don’t say it, you stupid piece of shit. This might sound like an overly angry post, but people on the internet tend to ruin movies for others. If anything you said is actually true to the movies, then you’re an awful person and should not participate in any more movie watching.

  • Dsimolke

Is this the first time you’ve ever visited any sort of movie site? The *spoiler* warning is quite clear. I even thought I put more space between the warning and the actual spoilers, but I guess it didn’t translate for some reason. Spoiler warning pretty much means don’t continue reading, I believe that’s painfully clear. I myself get mad when people ruin movies without giving a warning. You chose to continue reading for some reason.

You said: “If anything you said is actually true to the movies” – No, none of it’s true, I’m just discussing false information. Wow, james.

Soylent Green is people and Rosebud is the name of Charles Foster Kane’s sled from when he was a kid. Of course, you wouldn’t be reading this, right? And if you are reading it, in addition to the now clear fact that you’ve learned nothing, one can only hope you’ve seen these two movies. Which are two movies every educated 9th grader has seen. But you did seem to make it clear you hadn’t seen Solaris, Take Shelter, or Martha Marcy May Marlene (I’ll give you a pass on Another Earth) so I won’t hold out a lot of hope. I mean, even one would be passable I suppose. I hope you enjoy your first viewing of The Godfather and your eventual, second visit to a film site.

I kind of agree with James but without the pottymouth. So, you are one of those ‘know it all’ experts on movies and acting because………
you have a long resume of your credits in movies and on TV as well as being a stage star, correct? As Bill Cosby would say – RIIIIGHT!
Haven’t seen “ANOTHER EARTH” or anything thing else with Britt Marling in it. I think she’s attractive and I live this subtle performance so far. Doubt I’ll see it in the theaters but will definitely rent the DVD.
Never saw ‘CITIZEN KANE” or “SOLARIS” (which one? Neither.)
I don’t claim to be an expert but I know what I enjoy and I might enjoy this.
You need to chill. It’s only a movie. Movies are not ‘art’ as all you XpurtS claim, just entertainment. You should learn to be entertained. Don’t spoil things for others with your snide comments. Get a real life.
