Watch a 5 Minute Clip from the Live-Action SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO (STAR BLAZERS) Film

Japan’s live-action adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers in the U.S.) opened this past Wednesday in Japan and a five minute clip from the film has hit the net.  I didn’t grow up watching dubbed episodes of Space Battleship Yamato.  In fact, I had never even heard of the anime until the awesome looking trailer popped up last year.  Ever since, I’ve been keeping an eye on the film and this latest clip makes me hope that someone picks it up for a U.S. release.  Hit the jump to watch the clip:

Here’s the plot synopsis for Space Battleship Yamato via the film’s Wikipedia page:

The year is 2199, and the Earth has been under radioactive siege from extraterrestrials known as the Gamilas for five years. The Earth’s surviving population has moved underground to escape the bombardment, but the contamination is slowly penetrating to reach them. The last space battleship of the exhausted Earth Defense Forces, Yamato, sets out on a journey of to Iscandar, a planet located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, to acquire a device that can heal the ravaged Earth before it is too late.

I’ve never heard or seen anything until now, kind of reminds me of Robotech; somewhat..

    Looks interesting, I think..

    end of line

I used to watch Star Blazers (long time ago it seems). Really enjoyed it. This live action film seems to be staying true to the story.

Looks good. I hope we’ll see it picked up in North America.

Oh crap in a hat! I just read two original characters are now female in this film. Did Ron Moore and David Eick get their filthy hands on this too? So now were the Gamilas crated by humanity 40 years ago and have come back to destroy their former masters, and Capt. Okida doesn’t belive in Iscandar, and the robot from the anime now looks human and can mate with them? God, let’s hope not!

Aww, I remember this anime. It was very cheesy. The movie doesn’t look too bad though.

    Bayformers fans. See this?

THIS is how a live action movie is done.

Don’t know why this was not released in the US at least on a limited basis. Huge cult following in the US.

Well, while I wouldn’t hold ones breath that it will get a stateside theatrical run,the movie only released on December 1st in Japan. So its not out of the question yet. Just highly unlikey. I’m personally just holding my breath for an dvd stateside release. But since there is an English website dedicated to the film,we should get it over here. Or rather, we BETTER get it over here lol

Looks really good from that clip. Kinda surprised they’re pulling out the Wave-Motion-Gun (Or Undulation Gun) right away, but I’ll chalk that up to it being a movie. They -do- want to see it, after all.

This film is the embodiment of my youth. I remember watching rerun in the morning, and racing home in the afternoon to see the next episode. After accepting the compromises of the 70′s BSG to the new adaptation, i know that this Star Blazers film will most likely fall to the same fate. Understanding I am no die hard animation fan I will say this: I don’t F@&$#’ ing care what changes they make, just get it released in the US. Another post said it best….I have been waiting 30 hrs for this. If it doesn’t release as a box office smash I will think that it would be a missed opportunity, but if I have “settled” for DVD fine too.
