Whether you have fond memories of button-mashing Taito and Midway’s classic arcade game Space Invaders or are simply familiar with it in the same way you’ve heard about dinosaurs and landlines, there is a solid chance you’ll be seeing a film adaptation of the property in the not so distant future. Heat Vision reports that producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Gigi Pritzker have optioned film rights to the game and are currently in search of a writer to help bring the project to fruition. Although other rumored tries to adapt Space Invaders have ultimately proved barren, I wouldn’t put it past di Bonaventura to make this one stick as he is also a producer on the Transformers and G.I. Joe adaptations respectively and is currently developing a filmic take on another classic arcade game: Asteroids.
Before you say to yourself “How are they going to adapt a property that literally has no backstory outside of a pixelated ship shooting pixelated, otherworldly invaders?,” remember that the film adaptation of Hasbro’s Battleship hits theaters on May 18th, 2012. I know, it’s hard for me to believe too. But, now that you’ve accepted the fact that most likely any ol’ story will do for these sorts of undertakings, you can start preparing yourself accordingly for Space Invaders: The Movie by clicking here to play the classic arcade game for free. After playing, you’ll see why I hope di Bonaventura and Pritzker keep the original score intact. It truly is gripping stuff.
Beware the Invasion?
How about, “Beware Hollywood”? Pretty soon, there will be absolutely ZERO originally conceived movies. Every single one will be based on a pre-existing commodity. Movies will be 100 percent commercials for other products.
Space Invaders is a classic game but it shouldn’t be turn into a movie.
There are so many games that can be turned into movies like Halo, Assassin’s Creed, Metal Gear Solid, Call Of Duty etc.
I just hope the studios would stop remaking great classics and start to make video games turned into movies.
As long as Michael Bay isn’t involved
I’m holding out for “PONG”.
Go to Hell Hollywood.
Hmm, normally I’d say go to hell hollywood. BUT, this is nothing more than using a well known TITLE for a new and hopefully refreshing Alien Invasion movie.
The game has 2 concepts at its core.. Aliens invading.
Spaceship defending
So whats wrong with that? If Falling Skies/Independence day/V/War of the Worlds/Battle LA etc….. Were called SPACE INVADERS, would anyone really know any difference??
All this is, is just another Alien Invasion movie. With a familiar name to sell it. As long as the visuals here are better than the game, bring it on!!!
Oh, also, a film tied to one of the modern games (Half Life/Halo etc) is more likely to suck, because they never hit the mark making a film based on a game thats almost a film already. Sure you may think theres so much work already done, but they wont make a film with 30+ hrs of adventure etc.
Absolutely agree!
And your right, if they try to make film of newer games the film will be about as long as just the cut scenes. No room for the adventure so cannot immerse yourself into it like a game. Resident evil good example. But the films should still have been better horror not kung fu and Hi tech. The game was about suspense and zombies. Space invaders is simple idea so something original can be written for it. Same as Battleship.
If it is a movie talking about an “Alien Invasion”, great. But then, why binding it to a game with which it shares only the title ? Will we see flat b&W alien battleships exploding every 2 seconds from the beginning to the end of the movie ? ^^
I thought it was a movie already. Battle: Los Angeles.
What’s next Dig Dugger is turned into a film, sonic the hedgehog is adapted for a live action movie!
