We recently posted the betting odds for the artist who has been tapped to sing the new theme for Sam Mendes’ upcoming James Bond film, Spectre, but a new frontrunner has emerged. Apparently, an anonymous bettor wanted to place a £15,000 ($23,000) wager down on the English rock band Radiohead. (Mendes and Daniel Craig are both reported to be big fans, for what it’s worth.) That was a big enough chunk of change to necessitate a suspension of all betting on the Spectre theme by that particular bookie. And yet it’s clearly not going to stop the anticipation mounting for the 24th Bond film, which is due to open October 26th in the U.K., and November 6th in the U.S.
As THR reports, until the Radiohead bid came in, the frontrunner had been Ellie Goulding, who is dropping hints/red herrings via social media. She was third in the running the last we checked, but her stock rose after posting this on her Instagram:
Adele, who is also in the running to reprise her theme song-singing role after Skyfall’s award-winning run, recorded her theme at the same studio so perhaps Goulding is following in her footsteps. A spokesperson for William Hill bookmakers said the following:
“The first gamble of the day was Ellie Goulding and punters were backing her as if she already had the gig but just as we were thinking of pulling the plug we had a load of bets for Radiohead including one customer who asked to place a £15,000 bet on the band at 10/1. There seem to be all kinds of rumors and the plot has had more twists and turns than a classic Bond tale, but surely nobody risks £15,000 on a hunch.”
Other artists still in the running are Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and Noel Gallagher. The funny thing is, Mendes himself confirmed that the theme song has already been recorded but wouldn’t disclose who the artist was. My advice was to keep an eye out for big bets likely placed by someone with insider info; keeping that in mind, the Radiohead wager sure looks a lot more interesting.
