Actors on SPIDER-MAN Shortlist include Aaron Johnson, Anton Yelchin, Logan Lerman, Andrew Garfield, Jamie Bell

     June 27, 2010

After months of rumors, speculation, and news coverage regarding who will be taking over the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the reboot of the franchise, it’s starting to sound like Sony’s Columbia Pictures will be making their decision real soon.

As we recently reported, both Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) were added to the list of contenders.  Now, a report from Deadline reveals that studio decision makers spent Friday reviewing the screen tests of most of the actors who are finalists for the much coveted role.  Hit the jump to find out which actors had their screen tests viewed and also for a bit more on the current state of production.

Deadline mentions that although no one has actually been cast yet and there still might be some candidates added to the mix, most likely the role will go to one of the actors who had their screen test viewed on Friday.  Along with Johnson and Yelchin, the actors include: Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief), Andrew Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, David Fincher’s upcoming, The Social Network), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot), and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro).  Both Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half -Blood Prince) and Michael Angarano (Gentlemen Broncos) are also still being considered, but it is uncertain whether or not they actually did a screen test.

Ultimately, it seems a decision has to be made in the near future, since production is supposed to begin sometime later this year. Once the role of Peter Parker is set in stone, the studio will be able to focus on choosing a supporting cast that will play well off its main actor. As reported, the 3D film is being penned by Jamie Vanderbilt (The Losers, Zodiac) and will be directed by indie filmmaker, Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer).  We’ll bring you more on any casting decisions as soon as we hear them.
