Andrew Garfield Cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in SPIDER-MAN Reboot – UPDATED With Video and Pictures from Event

by     Posted: July 1st, 2010 at 5:35 pm

Andrew Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot.  Garfield’s casting follows months of speculation about who would don the webs.  Garfield was among the final list of contenders along with Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, Michael Angarano, and Josh Hutcherson.  Hutcherson had reportedly been offered the role yesterday.

Whether that’s true or if he turned it down is irrelevant (although I can’t imagine anyone turning it down).  Columbia Pictures has sent out a press release confirming Garfield as Spider-Man.  I liked Garfield in Parnassus, and he’s going to get a lot more exposure later this year when he’s seen in David Fincher’s Facebook movie The Social Network and Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go.  Hit the jump for quotes from Webb and the producers regarding Garfield’s casting.  Spider-Man is set to open in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Update: We’ve been given some pictures and video from today’s event in Mexico where director Marc Webb and producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin made the big announcement.  You can see Andrew Garfield looked shocked as he stepped onto the world stage.  Hit the jump to check everything out.  It’s after the highlights from the press release:

Here are quotes from director Marc Webb, producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, and Columbia Pictures top brass Amy Pascal and Matt Tolmach.  To the surprise of no one, they’re all positive about the casting and nowhere will you find the words: “Dear Lord, what have we done?”

Director Marc Webb:

Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.

Producer Avi Arad:

I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.

Producer Laura Ziskin:

We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction.  We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men.  In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.

Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures:

Spider-Man is a classic superhero — a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will  depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.

Garfield will begin preparing for the role immediately.  Here’s video and images from today’s event in Mexico where director Marc Webb and producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin made the big announcement.  Garfield looks a bit dazed.  Apparently he was only told moments before walking out that he got the part.

  1. I'm glad they went with someone a little older, but would have rather seen Jim Sturgess get it. Best of luck to him, and hopefully everyone will give him a fair chance. The guy was fantastic in 'Boy A'.

  2. interesting… I just hope he is funnier than Tobey, I never liked Tobey as Spidey so I will give him a chance as Spiderman and I also like Marc Webb a lot thanks to his work w/ 500 days.

  3. If you want to see a tour de force in acting, simply pick up Boy A and watch his performance. He was incredible in that film. It's nice to see that he's finally getting a big role.

  4. He is an excellent actor. Boy A was sensational because of him and he was superb in Red Riding Trilogy. Much better news than yesterdays rumour.

  5. Ok..maybe its just me…but this guy does not have the look of Peter Parker. In my opinion, he is not attractive at all. He has a weird face and his hair is all wrong. When I think of Peter Parker, I picture a cute 20-something guy with a smokin' hot body. This guy is not that at all. I predict an epic fail with this actor as the lead role of a Spiderman movie. I do not approve at all!

    • im pretty sure “rick” you dont have eyes or you may be blind because im pretty fucking sure andrew will be a GREAT peter parker, he has all of the things needed to play the part and im sure if you can find a way to get the movies and watch it you will be speechless and wanna eat your own words because im positive that your wrong and might wanna go the eye doctor really soon ..

  6. I know Peter is not suppose to be ugly but he's not suppose to be 'smoking' either. If he was 'smoking' then he wouldn't be picked on all the time right? That's the point of Spider-Man, and I'm just thinking you don't fully understand the character.

  7. I liked this guy in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, but he's a bit old yeah? It's kewl, I'm glad like Tobey before him, he is getting a Little more exposure by tackling this role.

  8. I think this is a great choice. He was the stand out chrarcter in Parnassus. And I honestly think he looks alot like what peter parker should look like. And he's gonna pull off the one liners easily. Can't wait.

    • r u kidding he looks nothing like peter parker is supposed to look and Andrew is GAY…………………………..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. parker isn't suppose to be the hot guy next door type. He's suppose to be a dork. Nuff said. If this guy can pull it then great.

  10. No disrespect Rick but you obviously know nothing about the Spiderman comics if you are to make a comment like that. I agree with Octoberist and Migs_lionhart; he's not supposed to be eye candy but someone who's somewhat of an outcast. That's why Tobey Maguire was a good choice for the previous series, he was believeable as a nerd. The major problem with Tobey was that he wasn't a good wise cracker. All things aside, I wait to see how this saga pans out!!!

  11. My only problem with him is his height… He has all the other qualities, but spidey is barely 5, 10 [175 cm] as an adult! Garfield is 6 feet tall [183 cm]…

  12. you dumbasses mesed u Andrew Gayfield will such and im never going to see another spiderman movie again you stupids should have left Tobey play spiderman dumb asses

    • well pikegeek.. do you know how to use the English language? i mean are you even speaking English? so Im sure that no one will give a flying fuck to what you have to say because no one can understand you ..

i truly hope you make in life because right now i have no hope for you..

  13. Im truly shocked that everyone is upset that tobey isnt going to be peter parker .. he wasnt cute and wasnt a good actor… so its about time they got someone who actually cute and can act..

  14. Andrew is old??? really? are these people kidding me? he was born 1983 while Tobey was 1975. get a life people! pls lets give Andrew a chance. Evaluate the film when it comes out. lets give him the benefit of the doubt.
im really looking forward for the reboot film. i like Andrew :)

  15. If any of you were true spider man fans, you’d know that peter parker is a nerd, an average looking human being. Which is why Tobey was perfect for this role. Garfield may be a ‘sensational’ actor, but he’s way too much of a pretty boy to play peter. I can’t even picture this dude in eye glasses. They should’ve payed more to keep Tobey, you know the old saying; “if it ain’t broke …”

  16. guys guys i think as the role of spider man tobey is the best he is great smart and the role is perfect for him but i don’t think Garfield is the best if some body want to replace tobey i think it must be karl urban but tobey is the best he must be cast again
