Fantastic news! We might finally be getting a Spider-Man movie we can all love. Today at CinemaCon, Sony chairman Tom Rothman announced that The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to mastermind an animated Spider-Man movie that will exist independently of the live-action films. The film will hit theaters July 20, 2018.

With 21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and The Lego Movie, Lord and Miller have established themselves as talented, irreverent filmmakers who can spin a not-so-great idea into a fantastic film. Basically, they make things that should really suck, somehow not suck at all. And boy does Spider-Man need that. Reactions to the most recent live-action films have ranged from tepid to furious, and for good reason. I quite enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man, but there's no denying it lacked that particular good-natured charm that has always set Spider-Man apart.

However, things are all-around looking up for the web-slinging vigilante, as Marvel and Sony recently reached the snowballs-chance-in-hell deal to include Spider-Man in the MCU, and Sony is moving forward not only with this animated Spidey feature, but an entirely new live-action franchise to tie in with MCU. Spider-Man has always thrived in the animated format, and I can't wait to see how Lord and Miller approach the character's signature quick-witted humor and boy-next-door charm.

Here's the full press release.
