Matt Damon is a big star, but he hasn’t really committed to getting into the superhero genre. The furthest he went was a cameo role in Thor: Ragnarok as an Asgardian actor playing Loki, but obviously studios would be happy to try and get him for something bigger, and apparently Sony has already tried.

In a new episode of Meet the Movie Press [via The Playlist], it’s rumored that Sony approached Damon about playing the villain in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. While Disney and Marvel Studios are staying buttoned up on pretty much everything past Avengers 4, Sony doesn’t have to worry about those constraints, and they’re certainly not slowing down when it comes to the successful Homecoming franchise. Getting Damon as the baddie would be a major get for the studio and in line with the current trend of having Oscar winners and nominees play the antagonists in superhero films.

However, the rumor says that Damon passed on the project, and there are no details on what the villain role would have been. His age doesn’t even really give much of a hint since in the comics, Vulture is typically an old man, but he was played by the middle-age Michael Keaton in Homecoming.

Will Damon ever commit to a superhero movie? It seems like he doesn’t have much interest in the genre, and it also doesn’t really need him. It’s also possible he’s looked at how much Batman weighed on friend Ben Affleck’s career and sees that while it might be a benefit for up-and-coming actors or actors who need a rebound role, it doesn’t do much for someone like Damon who’s doing just fine. But keep in mind that would be for a hero part, and Damon was offered a likely one-and-done villain unless Sony is eyeing a build-up to Sinister Six.

I think right now, it’s never-say-never with Damon joining a superhero universe, but he’s clearly waiting for the right role and the right time with no rush to jump into any project.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is currently set for July 5, 2019.
