SPIDER-MAN Reboot Updates: Five Main Contenders for Gwen Stacy AND Mary Jane? Philip Seymour Hoffman as Venom?

Let the Spider-Man reboot casting confusion continue! In August, we reported that Mary Jane was not going to be the love interest and that actresses testing for the female lead weren’t given the character’s name. This led to speculation that the reboot would have Peter Parker’s first love, Gwen Stacy, as the female lead. Deadline is now reporting that previously-named actresses (above, left-to-right) Emma Stone (Easy A) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) along with new names Dianna Agron (Glee), Dominique McElligott (Moon), and Georgina Haig (Wasted on the Young) are under consideration for Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane! While it’s possible two more candidates may enter the race, Deadline says that these five are the main contenders (although Agron, who tested last night, is iffy since there’s questions about whether her schedule can accommodate filming and doing Glee). It’s also possible that Sony and director Marc Webb may cast one of these actresses for Gwen Stacy and another for Mary Jane.
And the casting craziness doesn’t stop there. Hit the jump for the possibility of Venom returning and Sony courting Philip Seymour Hoffman. Marc Webb’s untitled Spider-Man reboot is set to open in 3D on July 3, 2012.
Deadline adds that there’s “early unconfirmed talk” that “they want to bring back Venom and they are looking at Philip Seymour Hoffman.” Deadline doesn’t make it clear if they want Hoffman to play Venom or if they want Hoffman for a different role. While I’m no fan of Venom (I think he’s a silly character), getting Hoffman in the role would be a bold move and major casting against type. Also, would Venom be the villain in the movie or would they set him to be the antagonist in the inevitable sequel? Other actors previously rumored to be under consideration to play the film’s currently-unnamed villain were Michael Fassbender (he opted to play Magneto in X-Men: First Class instead) and Christoph Waltz.
Here’s a brief rundown of what we we know about the Spider-Man reboot thus far:
- Andrew Garfield (Never Let Me Go) is playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
- Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) is directing.
- The budget is reportedly around $80 million.
- It will be set in high school.
- The movie will be “gritty, contemporary“.

How many Spider Man movies are they going to make suck by casting Venom poorly?
Please don’t have him as venom they fucked up before with venom they need somebody who is a very muscular person that’s how eddie brock is as and not as venom a muscular person if he is casted it will be an epic fail
I highly doubt that they are going to cast Philip Seymour Hoffman as Venom.
This would kill the idea that the reboot is going to be another origin story and I would LOVE to see venom back and done right on the big screen but Hoffman is not the man to play him. He does not have the build, he’s not young enough, and just doesn’t fit all around. I’d love to see Hoffman as Dr. Conners though.
Venom is a character who should apper last. For spider man they need to think five films ahead because they can. And Hoffman doesn’t belong in spider man.
Guy pierce, Tom hardy, or Sean Bean would be better choices. I hate venom, but if they did him just like the comics it would be cool. But I’d rather have them adapt the early years, and set up films bassed on the death of the stacys, kravens last hunt, the sinister six, the venom saga, and te clone saga.
Venom and Carnage are some of the most baddass spiderman villians. silly character. What about doc oc or green goblin or even the hobgoblin. Which spiderman character isn’t silly now that i think of it?
Venom and Carnage ARE badass!
I fullheartedly agree with that…

Don’t believe the Hoffman stories…it’s just baloney.
they need to put Shocker in a spider-man film
Seeing as how this is going to be more of the Ultimate Universe of Spider-Man, I am stoked. I want to see Mysterio. He would definitely work well with the 3D too. But if Venom is in this, I HIGHLY doubt Hoffman will be Brock. If he does end up being Brock, who knows? They might make him a creepy pedophile that hangs around the high school?
Instead of rebooting they should just shove a boot up this movies fat arse and just be done with it.
Honestly, they’re just going to reboot this ten bloody years from now anyway with another dumbass trying to break into Hollywood and another silly man trying to prove he can direct better. LOLz!
I wanna see a District 9 Follow up!
As stupid as this Philip Seymour Hoffman rumor is, this reboot does have the potental to be a brillant movie. After all, Garfeld is already a ten times actor then Maguire ever could be!
I think Venom in the first film is too fast, Eddie Brock on the other hand is a different story.
I can see them bringing in the character but just not turn him into the main antagonist in the first film.
And I am a fan of Philip Seymour Hoffman, but he shouldn’t play Venom. I can see him playing Dr. Octopus or maybe The Lizard?
Hopefully Emma Stone will get to be in it!
the best person to play Venom is Brock Lesner. I seriously doubt he can act, wrestling kinda counts, but every time I see him I think of Eddie Brock. But they shouldn’t have Venom in the reboot anyways.
First movie- brief origin posibly told in flashback’s.
Second movie- bring in black suit, introduce Brock, end movie in the church bell tower.
Third movie- unleash Venom
I know Raimi’s not doing the movies anymore, but Bruce Campbell needs to be Mysterio.
I’m wasn’t a fan of the two villain formula that the film adopted in the third Spider-Man; however if they were to attempt that once again I would hope they only lay the seeds for a villain in the next film. Maybe they could do the Lizard/Curt Conners storyline and let that lead into the Kraven The Hunter ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ storyline by having Kraven being an anti-hero/mentor in the first film before becoming a villian in the second.
Curt Conners – Sharlto Copley(District 9),Brian Cranston(Breaking Bad)
Kraven The Hunter – Gerard Butler(300),Clive Owen(Sin City)
Norman Osbourne – Liam Neeson(Taken), Edward Norton(Fight Club)
Mysterio – Bruce Campell(Evil Dead)
Venom/Eddie Brock – Mickey Rourke(Sin City)
Carnage/Cletus Cassidy – Guy Pierce(The Proposition),Sam Rockwell(Moon)
Black Cat/Felicia Hardy – Eliza Dushku(Dollhouse)
