It’s been three long years since we’ve seen a new film from director Spike Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are), but he’s currently hard at work on his next feature. Very little has been known about the film besides the fact that Joaquin Phoenix stars alongside Rooney Mara, Amy Adams, and Olivia Wilde. It was previously rumored that the film centers on a man who falls in love with the voice of a Siri-like computer device, and now a bit more light has been shed on the film’s plot by way of an official synopsis. Hit the jump for the full synopsis and title.
In the not so distant future, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system designed to meet the user’s every needs. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.
So it’s not quite Siri, but it’s still decidedly offbeat in a way that only Jonze could pull off. News of the film’s title comes via The Film Stage, who reports that the pic is simply called Her. Jonze wrapped filming this summer, but the pic doesn’t have a release date just yet. In all likelihood it’ll make the film festival rounds next year before hitting theaters. Either way, I’m ecstatic that we’ve got a new Spike Jonze film on the way with a wholly original premise and a wonderfully talented cast.
