First Poster for SPRING BREAKERS Sequel; James Franco Speaks Out on the Unapproved Follow-Up

A week after the sequel was officially announced, the first Spring Breakers 2 poster has been spotted by our correspondent at the Cannes Film Festival.  The follow-up is titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming and finds the titular Spring Breakers doing battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.  However, the sequel is being developed without the involvement or consent of Spring Breakers writer/director Harmony Korine or James Franco, and the latter has been quite vocal about his opposition to the follow-up.  Essentially, it’s an effort by the producers to take advantage of a recognizable brand.  They hope to mix both old and new castmembers in The Second Coming, but it’s doubtful that any of the main actors from Spring Breakers will actually return.

Regardless, Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is being shopped to buyers at Cannes, and our correspondent was able to snap a photo of the billboard being used to promote the pic.  Hit the jump to take a look at the Spring Breakers 2 poster and to read Franco’s full statement about the film.

Check out the Spring Breakers 2 poster below, snapped by Talia Soghomonian, followed by Franco’s statement about the film.

Here’s what Franco had to say about the Spring Breakers sequel, via his Instagram.

STATEMENT ABOUT SPRING BREAKERS 2: This is not being done with Harmony Korine or my consent. The original was wholly Harmony’s creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel. I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship. It will be a terrible film, with a horrible reason d’être: to make money off someone else’s creativity. Can you imagine someone making the sequel to “Taxi Driver” without Scorsese and De Niro’s consents? Insanity! I’m speaking up for Harmony and his original vision and for any creative person who cares about preserving artistic integrity.

did he really just compare spring breakers to taxi driver?

    • Colby Doler

No, he just used Taxi Driver as an example.

      • axalon

Dude you are the voice of reason around here

      • jack

        bad example

    • i AN LEGEND

      no.

    • James Franken

Yes. We have to assume that he chose Taxi Driver as the comparable film because he believes they are films of the same caliber. He’s got some good stuff, but he’s also an idiot, unfortunately.

      • jack

agreedo.franco has a long way to go before having a movie up there with taxi driver!

  • Oliver Queen

He’s completely right, it’s wrong, besides this should be a one off film and not a franchise. Using Taxi Driver as an example made me think even more deeply about this situation. Franco your an awesome actor and one of my favourites, loved ya in Apes, Spidey and even as the crazy Alien. :D

    • Taxi Driver 2: Beginnings

      Err. Troll…

    • damen shroulder

Haha, you just lost credibility by citing Apes and Spidey as your favorites of his films. *shakes head* You must be a troll…

If the producers own the rights to the name ‘Spring Breakers’, what is he so mad about? Welcome to the re-make/sequel/prequel-fest that is Hollywood. Either own the rights to your own creation or learn to let it go because it’s not yours anymore, you sold it.

    • James VDB

Exactly. Every sequel, prequel, remake, reboot and movie based on a novel or a comic book can be considerd as a project “to make money off someone’s else creativity.” It’s how Hollywood works.

      • SB&J

And Spring Breakers is far from untouchable. I’m looking forward to a sequel. Hopefully it will get right everything that Spring Breakers got wrong.

    • Spanky

He’s mad about the same thing that we the movie going audience is mad about – horrible sequels to original films, remakes everywhere etc.

So shouldn’t we be applauding someone who can actually cause a stir by speaking out against it?

Oh wait, spouting useless negative turd comments is all most of you know…

      • diazfan209

My point is that he was speaking out against a film company that’s moving forward on a project that they themselves own. Franco seems to take the position that it’s his creation, from his ideas, so the film remains his regardless.

The primary theme that I took away from this article is regarding creative control. This is a good discussion about how getting funding for a project can ultimately get you removed from your own creation. There is some serious aversion for artists to have what they created be taken over by a man in a suit, and the paradox is that film projects must have backing to be created.

As Vincenzo Castiliane says “It’s no longer your film.”

Where was his sequel for money’s sake outrage at Spider-man 3?

    • The Flobbit

Money has nothing to do with it. If Franco has shown anything with his myriad strange indie and directorial projects, it’s that money is not something he cares about. Creativity and license, however, is big with him.

    • the king of comedy

Well that movie still had the same creative team pulling the strings, even tough admitelly Raimi had to deal with a lot of the studio`s interference.

  • Hugh Jackman mate

    The Second Cumming

  • DeathoftheEndless7

He should’ve used Raging Bull as an example, because some idiot actually tried to make a direct sequel to it.

  • Crab

Personally, I think SB was crap but this situation is a bigger crap, I can’t belive this kind of shit still happen

    • shibbie

The premise for Spring Breakers was promising, but the movie was total crap. It basically showed there being no consequences for their actions. It’s a cool movie for white trash, EDM-type college girls. It should have been more like Requiem For a Dream.

  • Strong Enough

the end of the trilogy should be 3 girls kidnapped and taken to the hood by gang members where after a successful attempt at escaping a potential “train” on them they shoot their way out to the suburbs.

    Spring break forevvvvuh

  • stylus59

it’s written by Irvine Welsh though, so that’s something

  • Redjester

Haven’t seen Spring Breakers. Is it worth watching?

    • The Flobbit

To see Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and a bunch of other girls spend 90% of screentime in a bikini…then yes.

For a thought provoking, tasteful film, no.

      • Redjester

Perhaps when I was a teenager that would have done it for me.

    • fuckorine

It’s a pretentious attempt at an artsy film. It wishes it was Requiem For a Dream for girls who are like this, but the only message it sends to its audience is “Party hard, do drugs, hang with the wrong people, kill people, steal – that’s life as a crazy college girl!”.

    • bitchplease

no do not watch, biggest waste of time ever, there are some interesting filming techniques but other than that its shit

  • kins

Come on in any case, The second spring breakers, will just be some other stupid teen movie with sex and comedy… nothing compared to the 1st. And Franco is right, just cashing in.

This is hilarious. The people who made the horrid Spring Breakers are stressing about losing the INTEGRITY of their creation. LOL James Franco is just so concerned…LOL

I hope this crappy sequel is the Highlander The Quickening of this dumb-ass franchise.

    • bitchplease

No i hope that the sequel is waaay better so they can all eat it

  • Colin Christian

I adored the first one,in my top 5 of the year, and for that reason will not go near this garbage.

    • MJ

Does your big rubber doll head play “Spring Breakers Poon-Tang” with you?

Where was the outcry when they made a crap direct to video sequel to Roadhouse? Huh? HUH? That’s right – NONE of you came out to defend that movie’s artistic integrity yet you’re all over defending Spring Breakers! I lower my head in shame

i think the majority of casual moviegoers don’t give a shit about a sequel to spring breaker. if it were taxi driver there would be an outcry amongst everyone

Who cares, Spring Breaker sucked. Most overrated picture and anyone who is suckered in to wasting even more money on the sequel deserves it because they are stupid enough to think the first movie was actual worth a crap. I turned the movie off 5 minutes in, horrible horrible movie.

Please explain exactly how it was compared

Then buy a clue and understand it was used as an example, a ‘what if’ example

It’s a comparative example you retard. He’s clearly comparing the two, he may not be saying SB is as good as taxi driver but he is most certainly comparing them by using it as an example. There’s a reason he didn’t use Bucky Larson as his example.

But is there a reason he didn’t choose any of the thousands of movies that would have made more sense as a comparison? James Franco is a pretentious idiot who thinks his shit doesn’t stink, clearly, as Spring Breakers was complete (white) trash.
