In recent years, the on-screen partnership of Stanley Tucci and Meryl Streep has borne the Oscar-tinged* fruit of The Devil Wears Prada and Julie & Julia. Tucci hopes that if he steps behind the camera, and positions comedienne Tina Fey in front of it, the duo can recapture some of the magic.
In fact, without a script or even a writer on board, that’s roughly the whole of Tucci’s pitch for Mommy & Me (working title), a mother-daughter comedy with Fey and Streep attached to star. Tucci plans to direct and produce Mommy with Steve Buscemi and Wren Arthur under their Olive Productions; no word yet on whether he intends to set aside a role for himself. More after the jump:
If the cast comes together per the 24 Frames‘ report, such a combination would be commercially potent. Streep’s career has produced a string of hits lately, once you tally Mamma Mia! and It’s Complicated alongside the aforementioned Prada and Julia. Likewise, Fey’s Date Night had a long and prosperous run this spring, further establishing her presence beyond the medium of television.
Streep has recently been mentioned in connection with the Mike Nichols drama Great Hope Springs alongside Jeff Bridges, and she is the likely candidate to portray former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the biopic The Iron Lady. Fey will next be heard in theaters on November 5th voicing the female lead in the animated feature Megamind. You can see her writing/acting work more imminently on the fifth season of 30 Rock, which premieres September 23rd on NBC.
*for Ms. Streep, anyway
