It’s a good day to be a Star Trek fan.  We recently reported on some quotes from Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve regarding J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, and now Paramount has released a batch of high-resolution images from the film.  We’ve seen a couple of these before in low-resolution or watermarked versions, but quite a few of them provide new looks at the Enterprise crew and that dastardly Cumberbatch.  Additionally, Abrams recently (and admirably) showed a dying Trek fan named Daniel the full film.  Daniel’s wife has now provided an update, sharing their reaction to seeing the film and noting Abrams and Bad Robot’s generosity.

Hit the jump to check out the images and to read the quotes from Daniel’s wife.  The film also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, and Bruce GreenwoodStar Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17th in 2D, 3D, and IMAX.

Here’s the update from Daniel’s wife courtesy of Reddit (via Yahoo!).

Hi everyone, it’s Daniel’s wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture…However; Daniel ‘hates’ being an ‘inspiring cancer story’ we his friends and loved ones would prefer for the update to have more of a heartfelt message of giving, especially during this season:

This is a story of us giving something to him, the ‘internet’ community giving something to him and ultimately being a heartwarming gift to our friends, family and so many others. This story of us (and of course JJ Abrams & Bad Robot) being able to give this surprise gift of a screening to a huge movie buff like Daniel, especially a film made by a film maker who obviously makes movies with such care, with a fan like Daniel in mind (and a person like me who knows slightly less about these things). Also, it was truly amazing that a film-maker so secretive as JJ Abrams was kind enough to show this to us.

It is also so wonderful for his friends & his family to finally hear some good news from us, They know how important film is to Daniel & could not think of a better way to please to him. So this gesture really has brought a lot of smiles all around.

It was a wonderful thing to see with Daniel and a wonderful thing to see Daniel enjoy – Making someone as ill as he is smile for any length of time really makes a difference. (At this point making me smile is good too)

This is also so poignant as JJ Abrams took so much care in the first Star Trek movie to at least TRY to get everything ‘right’ for the fans and we were so touched when he was concerned that we wouldn’t 100% enjoy the screening as it’s still being worked on…….Be assured we enjoyed it 110%! We are so grateful thank you, thank you, thank you…..

  1. It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, but I can remain silent no longer.

This film looks atrocious. The trailer gave me bile movements reminiscent of Dragonball: Evolution. It was a mash up of Revenge of the Sith x Inception trailer soundtrack.

If anything these images have solidified my sorrow in witnessing the destruction of the Star Trek franchise. As for Cumberbatch leaping through the window? Knee-jerk mind warp to Demolition Man.

    Pliskin, out.

    • Lol please… Trek ’09 was the best Trek movie since The Undiscovered Country. What rock were you under when Rick Berman was the producer? After Deep Space Nine went off the air, the Trek series/movies that existed between ’99 and ’09 were total crap. Abrams did (and appears to continue to do) a great job reviving a franchise that was already dead for ten years.

      • Invoking Berman’s total failure to do anything except get the trains to run on time and keep his nose largely out of DS9 is NOT a defense against the atrocity that is the AbramsVerse.

Mustard gas and fission bombs BOTH kill you.

I do have to say that one viewing of the Abrams thing was so much more than enough … the idea it could have lived down to expectation and been even worse than I imagined … well, they must have really gone all out.

    • It’s funny how some Trekkies have selective memory about the original series. It’s like you all forget that it was an action/adventure show to begin with. Indeed, one of the things that made Star Trek great to begin with was that it told various stories about the human condition, but you can’t tell me there was some lesson to be taught from “The Trouble with Tribbles”, “The Doomsday Machine”, or various other classic episodes like them. Nor was there some ethical dilemma shown in the TNG season one episode “Conspiracy” (really about the only good episode in the entire season) or ALL good episodes of that show. You can also say what you want about Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home having some message about humanity’s treatment of nature, but the core of what made that movie enjoyable was that it was simply a fish out of water comedy. You can accuse the new Star Trek of being a shadow of its former self, but in reality it isn’t really that much different from various Trek episodes/movies that have been seen before.

  2. Ok Pliskin, you knew the punch bowl was spiked right? Sorry to leave the party so early guys, I’ll be the designated driver, come on Pliskin let’s get you home for some sleep…

  3. It’s not Khan. Kirk doesn’t find the ship Khan and his superpeople are on until later on in the “5 year mission”. Carol Marcus had Kirk Jr. before “Space Seed”.
It makes more sense that the character is Kirk’s buddy who goes all psychic in the “Where No Man has Gone Before” episode.
