You’ve seen the announcement trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness and you want more.  You’re clicking to see if there’s any way you can still get tickets to IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey because they’ll show the first 9 minutes of the movie.  You’re building a time machine to jump forward to December 17th when another trailer will launch.  For now, you can enjoy 15 more seconds of footage from the upcoming flick.  No, it doesn’t tell you the name of the villain, because that would ruin the entire picture (apparently).  But it does have a bit of a callback to the most popular Star Trek film ever made.

Hit the jump to check out the Japanese trailer, which contains 15 more seconds of footage.  The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX on May 17th, 2013.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The villain’s name is …. KKKKKHHHHHHAAAAANNNN!!

    • A

A white british khan? I think not

    • Tyler

Actually, it’s Mitchell. Karl Urban let it slip back in September, and so did Simon Pegg.

  • Tom

The voice shakiness in delivering “Is there anything you wouldn’t do for your family?” is very compeling.

  • Francesca

    The hands… definitely Khan

    • TheHOYT

      Wouldn’t that be Kirk’s hand, not Khan’s if it’s a call-back.

Also, this is an alternate reality Star Trek now, so Spock could die in a similar way to WoK, but under completely different circumstances.

      • Anonymous

        Isn’t it Uhuras hand?

      • Andrew

Unlikely that it’s gonna be Spock,…i mean, they killed him in Star Trek 2 already!

  • A

Its not Khan, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

It’s spocks hand behind the glass, he’s doing the vulcan salute (live long and prosper). look at it again.

    • Pedro

Yes, yes. Spack’s hand. (Thank you, Winona!) But to whom is he saluting?

  • CrackedIt

I think I’ve cracked it. Cumberbatch is playing – a young Picarcd! First off Patrick Stewart is a Brit, secondly Cumberbatch is ALSO a Brit …ok so that’s all I’ve got but it’s a start….

  • Bob

They should have just did this trailer for America to, the last bit of footage makes it so much better. Still, both are great teasers.

  • Tousif Shaikh

Oh Man voice of Cumberbatch is so amazing !!!!

  • Stinky

How can it NOT be Khan?

It what Hollywood does Paramount let Gary Mitchell or some other unheard-of bozo become the big bad in the Trek follow-up?

    Beam up to reality.

  • ryan

Why are ppl still on the whole Kahn thing? It’s clearly Gary Mitchell. Super powered starfleet officer who is impervious to phaser fire and has a personal vendetta against starfleet itself. The fact that he is wearing the black stafleet uniform might indicate that this is taking place at an earlier time than it did in TOS. Kirk and Mitchell originally meet at starfleet academy before he was ever a part of the enterprise crew. Plus, Alice Eve seems to be playing Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, which would seal the deal on the Gary Mitchell story line…but yea it’s def NOT Kahn.

  • Tol

The hand we see against the glass opposite Spock’s is Cumberbatch’s, who has been sacrificed to save the Enterprise and her crew. The ‘family’ he speaks of.

A memorial service is held for Cumberbatch’s character, who ‘died’ while in service of the Federation.

Only he did not die. He was transformed, ala Gary Mitchell.

Now he is back. He is powerful. He is pissed.

He was sacrificed to save the ‘family’. How much more will Kirk sacrifice to protect them and his beloved Federation now?

    • raddestnerd

@Tol, i think you nailed it! Sounds exciting. Now i’m looking forward to this one. Was afraid it was rehash of Shinzon and Nero with the whole “vengeance” thing.

Others theorizerd Picard. That would be sick. Kirk vs Picard!

  • Grayden

The hand-on-hand thing might just be there to throw everyone off. Watch it not even be in the final cut.

  • Stinky

Why is it “obviously” Gary Mitchell?

Cumberbatch jumping around and kicking ass would be something a super-charged human could do.

The Starfleet uni could be a disguise. Aice Eve could be anyone. Why not Janice Rand or Carol Marcus?

Spock giving the Vulcan high-five behind glass is pretty telling.

    • ryan

Pretty telling?? :) okay…let’s just wait for the flick and then you let me know how i nailed that s**t. Spock is most likely on the outside of the glass and the other person’s hand is who ever is in danger. It may be a throw back to Star Trek 2 visually but for anyone to think that they would do anything as obvious as Kahn or mimicking Trek 2 directly is just a fool. Lets just wait and see but it seems pretty obvious to me.

There is something about Cumberbatch’s voice over that does imply he is Kahn, returning to Earth and all that. But I can’t get past the fact that they cast someone who is clearly not East Indian to play Kahn if that is the case. Yes, I know Ricardo wasn’t East Indian either, but it was the 60′s and he was cast because he could sort of pass for someone of Indian descent. And if Cumberbatch IS Kahn, the alternate timeline would not explain the ethnic shift (not to mention the British dialect) since Kahn was lost in space long before Nero altered the timeline. He isn’t obviously Gary Mitchell, but he is more likely to be that character than Kahn.

  • Km

Now that I’ve watched this what am i supposed to do with my life now?

    • Shaun

      Get one?

      • Nico

        lol

“But it does have a bit of a callback to the most popular Star Trek film ever made.”

Based on box office, the most popular Trek film ever is the first Abrams one. Before that, it was ST IV – The Voyage Home (still #2). Then it’s First Contact, then TMP, and THEN, finally, ST II – TWOK.

If we use Rotten Tomatoes as our less than perfect guide, the Abrams film is (somehow) the most acclaimed at 95%, with First Contact at 92%, and ST II – TWOK at 91%.

TWOK seems to be most people’s favorite these days (mine too), when you talk to people, or read message boards, but “popular” is a relative term.

I certainly like TWOK better than AbramsTrek, but then I like almost all of them better than that one.

Why does it have to be either of them? Why not a new character? Besides that, it’s the same old story of one man out for revenge against the Federation and Earth. What is this “detonated the fleet and everything it stands for” stuff? Who the heck ever heard of “red (herring) matter”, the biggest idiocy in the last movie? It won’t be original, but it will make boatloads of money and that is what the studio wants and so do the fans, because it means more movies.”Human. Why the very word is racist.”

  • Slice

Hooray another movie where they regurgitate old characters in situations we’ve already seen!

COME UP WITH A NEW IDEA PLEASE!

  • J Riley

Star Trek II – The Wrath of Gary Mitchell

  • billybibbo

It’s definitely Gary Mitchell, which would be cool because it would be honoring the old pilot.

Into darkness, I mean come on, it sounds like they will go to the edge of the universe where Mitchell takes his superhuman form.

Mitchell is superhuman, this dude is superhuman.

blond chick from trailer looks like Dr. Elizabeth Dehner.

    I’m convinced

Looks to me like Kirk and co and Cumberbatch are fighting Klingons. Cumberbatch has just saved Kirk and Uhura’s life.

    ‘Hello, Jim’

    ‘Gary? Wha…?’

‘No time to explain, we must go.’

  • Lieutenant Benedictian

Why do these people say that J J Abrams is ruining Star Trek? I don’t get it. At least 90 percent of my Trekkie friends think the ’60′s episodes are boring. And I agree. I tried watching them and couldn’t. I grew up on TNG, DS9, Voyager, etc. and I love all of them and I think the J J Abrams movies are faithful and spectacular!! New idea?!? They kind of are combining the old stories/characters and changing it to be unique. Satisfies both sides of the argument I think. And this one looks like the best Star Trek ever…and not just because Benedict Cumberbatch is in it. He is one of the best actors ever and his voice and action sequences were fantastic!! he will be the best. What’s wrong with him being British? Do people not realize that Scotty is Scottish…from the UK…not so different, smart people. I don’t care who Benedict is playing…it’s Benedict, that’s all I need to know!!!!!!
