The first trailer for director J.J. Abrams’ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness has been released.  Benedict Cumberbatch takes control from the get-go with a narration over a sequence of increasingly dramatic scenes. The rest of the crew get a few seconds of face-time apiece, but action, destruction and Cumberbatch rule over this trailer. While there are no glimpses of space shown, there appears to be at least three separate terrains to keep our heroes busy. And it looks as if someone has lost control of the Starship Enterprise…

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller and Noel Clarke.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX on May 17th, 2013.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Watch the Japanese trailer….different to other versions…

    • Aido

Japanese trailer has a scene/shot straight from with Wrath of Kahn!

  • Cpt. Hindsight

    So is he Gary Mitchell

    Or

    KHHHHHAAAAANNN!!

    OR

a combo of the Mitchell and Khan timelines merging with the new changed timeline…TREK! Ok…ignore that last one. Ha

  • ssr

    GARY MITCHELL or KHAAAN….. hmmmmm
Who Cares…. Cumberbatch is killing it.

  • Michael Horne

That just looks cool. Loving the Cumberbatch voice over. I’m starting to wonder if perhaps this is NOT Gary Mitchell. There’s a statement that the villain is returning for revenge. Well, that could be anything and it would have to be a on a BIG scale to cause the damage in the poster and the trailer. So, it’s unlikely it’s a score against Kirk. However, Kirk clearly has a love interest (Nurse Chapel? Perhaps leading us back to Mitchell territory…) so perhaps she is killed (she certainly doesn’t seem happy) and that’s the personal score Kirk has to settle.
Loving the whole battle uniform costumes that Spock and Uhura are wearing, very military. I wonder, actually, if Starfleet isn’t obliged to become more military-led rather than exploration after the events in the first new film. It would certainly twist Roddenberry’s vision of the future.
As with the first new film, production values and cinematography look to be of extremely high quality.
    Can’t wait!

  • Clark Griswold

Yeah the Japanese version does have an extra bit at the end, with one very interesting shot that brings Wrath of Khan to mind…hmm.

Benedict Cumberbatch is just one amazing actor.
Did anyone see the Last Enemy series from BBC? He killed that role.

Not funny anymore. Never was. Get over it.

  • Joseph M

Yes, Benedict is killing it all over the place. Looks promising, but I really hope the finale isn’t on the fiery volcanic planet. Revenge Of The Sith’s already been there. I would have thrown in a little space travel, too. The space scenes are what made the last one.

  • Errol

    Can’t freaking wait!!!

  • Slaughter

Looks good, but sounds like they took the music from the “Prometheus” trailer.

    • jimmyevil

Or the Inception trailer. Or the World War Z trailer.

LOL that has to be the least intimidating villain ever. OOWWW let’s all be scared of some nerdy British guy named Benedict.

    • Catsan

LOL or lets really think the universe will be saved by a pretty boy called Chris or a dour faced hero called Zachary…..

    • Lexavi80

U kidding? What trailer did you watch?

I think the guy looked pretty destructive to me.

It\’s Sybok Spock\’s brother from star trek 5 just check out the ears!!

  • Catsan

Tend to think it’s Sybok after seeing the Japanese trailer. The comment about “Is the anything you would not do for your family” coupled with the scene kind of points me in that direction. That plus the ears…

  • Pocketses

I don’t care if it’s Khan or Gary Mitchell, that movie just looks amazing as hell either way!

And I do think Khan, if only for the Japanese trailer. Everything else makes me think Gary Mitchell, but that last bit…

Damn you, JJ Abrams, no one else has this kind of freaking secrecy about their films, what the hell, bro!?

  • MY oh MY

This movie is everything else, but its not Star Trek anymore :(

God Job Paramount and JJ Crapbrams you successfully ruined great franchise.
I believe Gene Roddenberry is turning in his grave right now.

    • Joseph M

Roddenberry’s turning in his grave? Is he down there with one of the starlets he kept sexually assaulting? And how awesome are you to know a film’s failed by watching 90 seconds of it. Truly awesome.

      • MY oh MY

Yes, actually, I can say that.
Anyone can see this is just action packed cgi fest.
This may have great boxoffice results, but true spirit of Star Trek is long gone.
This trailer looks just like any other modern blockbuster (Transformers, Battleship, Xmen) just with Star Trek ships in it.
And if you judge a movie just by its boxoffice results, than go jerk-off over Avatar and Transformers.
I will go back to watch TNG again, those have greater artistic and story value than any JJ Crapbrams movie will ever have.
Don’t care what Roddenberry has done, (it wasnt proven anyway), but he did create a universe which we all should strive to get to. Not just mindless cgi crap for american nerds.

      • Pocketses

Gotta love someone who appreciates being able to rip on someone for their writing “shortcomings” while knocking out of the park with a witty bit of insult-work such as “JJ Crapbrams”

You, sir, are a wordsmith. You’re an artist behind that screen.

I’ve been a Trek fan my entire life. More than almost any other forms of Science Fiction, I appreciate Star Trek the most. I’m marathoning through four different trek shows at the moment. Guess what? This looks amazing. Deal with it, pop a few zits to pass the time while the rest of the world can appreciate things that are (gasp) fun.

      • Steve

Excellent point Pocketses. If the new Star Trek isn’t reflecting “Roddenberry’s Vision” sufficiently for some, they always have 5 TV series of varying quality and 10 other movies of varying quality to sustain them. Funny how some Trekkies never seem to remember that.

    • Chief Petty Officer Dudeface

“This movie is everything else, but its not Star Trek anymore. God Job Paramount and JJ Crapbrams you successfully ruined great franchise. I believe Gene Roddenberry is turning in his grave right now.”

As a Trek fan myself, it irritates the hell outta me to keep hearing this crap, especially when you’re basing it off a 1-minute long teaser. It’s not like it’s being marketed any differently than any other Trek movie/TV show (save for very few exceptions). As for Abrams “ruining Trek”, where the hell were you when Voyager and Enterprise were on TV? Or when those shitty TNG movies were released? If you were paying attention then, you’d know that Star Trek was ruined long before JJ Abrams came to fix it.

If you actually knew what Star Trek is, you’d also know that the original series was an action/adventure show. Yes, social commentary was sprinkled throughout and that’s one of the reasons I enjoyed it as well as TNG and DS9, but not every episode needed it to be good. Do you not remember “The Trouble with Tribbles” or “The Doomsday Machine”? Plus, it’s not like adding lessons on the human condition helped Star Trek Generations, Insurrection, or Nemesis become better movies. Same goes for Voyager and Enterprise. Also, while I will always respect Roddenberry for creating the franchise, he was not the only creative force behind the Trek saga.

  • SP1234

Cumberbatch looks so much like Peter O’Toole here, it’s crazy. Love it.

  • J.R.

OMG Spock is going to die…………. this is going to end the same way the original movie (Wrath) ended

  • david seth

YouTube the Japanese version for a lil more footage that has me leaning in the direction of the villain NOT being khan or Mitchell… but Saibok?! In the immortal words of the great Keanu… Whoa

What is up with all the fangirls here getting their panties in a bunch?

    • Steve

Normally I’d let the Prometheus comment slide, but I feel I need to point out something to people who say this is looks like Prometheus or (worse) Transformers rather than Star Trek. The reason why the darker story tone can work for Star Trek is because the characters are so well established. We actually care about these people, so a trip into darkness has higher stakes. That’s not something you get in a Michael Bay movie. That’s not something we felt in Prometheus because the characters were such stock representations of people. There is nearly 50 years of Star Trek out there in many different forms and there are plenty of TV episodes featuring strange new worlds and Roddenberry’s touchy feely Humanism. These particular movies occupy one of action, adventure, but with the beloved characters we know and love. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. And by the looks of this, it’s could be a helluva ride.

    Fantastic trailer. Very cooooooooooooool

  • paul tracy

underwhelming…Perhaps JJA should stick to making trailers and not full length movies. The silent/graceful trailer would have been a bit more powerful than the dunderheaded and often ripped off score here.
