The new Star Trek is going above and Beyond for the alien warrior Jaylah (Sofia Boutella from Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (Karl Urban). The characters, one new and one returning, snag the spotlight in what we can only assume are the first set of many new character posters for the film. [Update: We’ve now collected the full set of character posters]
As we’ve seen in the latest trailer from the Star Trek fan event, Star Trek Beyond sees the crew in the midst of their famous voyage into deep space where they encounter a mysterious new enemy, Idris Elba’s Krall. The crew is forced to evacuate the Enterprise through escape pods after the ship is seemingly destroyed, and they become stranded and separated on a planet. That’s where Jaylah comes into the picture. As she says in the footage, she knows what’s going on, but as for the rest of us, we’ll have to keep guessing.
Urban, meanwhile, is one of many returning characters, including Chris Pine’s Kirk, Zoe Saldana’s Uhura, Zachary Quinto’s Spock, Simon Pegg’s Scotty, Anton Yelchin’s Chekov, and John Cho’s Sulu. The actor told us on our visit to the film’s set that Star Trek Beyond gives the relationship between Bones and Spock its due, in addition to capturing “the essence of the original series.” He added, “It’s much more of an ensemble piece. I think there’s great character development for everybody, and fantastic action.”
You can thank Justin Lin for the action. The Fast and Furious franchise helmer takes over for J.J. Abrams in the director’s seat for Beyond, set to hit theaters on July 22nd. Here’s the official, yet vague plot synopsis.
“Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In “Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
