They may not be three-dimensional, but IDW’s prequel comic “Star Trek Countdown to Darkness” provides the first look at Klingons since the deleted scenes in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek.  Acting as a bridge between Star Trek and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness, the fourth issue in the comic series promises a bit of bearded and bladed action from the fan-favorite alien race.

Star Trek Into Darkness, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Cho, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve and Anton Yelchin, opens May 17th.  Hit the jump to check out the full Klingon image, plus a recap of our previous and ongoing coverage of Star Trek Into Darkness.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

      Exactly!
Then again, JJ went on record saying he was more a Star WARS fan than Trek, before he made the first film. Thats why the first has so much Wars feel about it than Trekky. But the Vader cosplay masks took it a bit tooo far!

I wonder if they will show any without the helmets since they did not really have forehead ridges during this time.

I always thought the helmets for JJ’s Klingons were sort of an ingenious idea. They acknowledged TNG era Klingons but for all we knew, the foreheads under those helmets were smooth. To go by canon, Klingons were beginning to get their ridges (back) by Star Trek: The Motion Picture. So maybe the changes were accelerated by the changed timeline.

Gotta run. Mom will be bringing lunch down soon and this basement is a wreck.
