Last month we reported that the Gene Roddenberry series Star Trek: The Next Generation would be getting a long-overdue high definition makeover for its Blu-ray debut later this year. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, all 178 episodes will eventually be released, but in the meantime fans will have to make due with a three-episode special called, Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level. It will include the feature-length version of the pilot, as well as the season three episode “Sins of the Father” and the season five episode “The Inner Light.” The Next Level will hit shelves on January 31, 2012 and has a suggested retail price of $21.99. For a look at how the original version compares to the new hi-def re-mastering, hit the jump.

Although this comparison has been floating around the net for a week or so, some of you might have missed it. It’s mind-blowing to think about how much work went into the new version as technicians went back to the original, uncut film negatives – more than 25,000 reels of them – and recut new film to incorporate true HD visual effects into high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. Now you’ll be able to see Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton and the rest of the crew of the Starship Enterprise in the way they were truly meant to be seen. But that’s enough jabbering from me. Check out the video below to see the before-and-after comparison of the two-hour pilot  episode, “Encounter at Farpoint.”

what a lame episode to show off blu ray. How about some borg or something

Trailer kinda needs to be in high-def too, or what’s the point?

Don’t knock Farpoint. It doesn’t stand up well, but if you’re going to show off a remaster/recut/re-effected episode, it’s a great one to choose – lots of visual effects, visual style and it’s _very_ old and therefore will show the remastering work brilliantly.

As for the rest of the episodes on offer – not a great selection IMHO. I would have preferred three two-parter episodes – the mini movies always worked very well.

    Sins of the Father? Meh.
Inner Light? Well, brilliant drama and performances, but not much to show off, really.
