William Shatner Fights the Gorn Again in Promo for STAR TREK: THE VIDEO GAME

William Shatner should probably never reenact anything he did from Star Trek.  It only calls attention to the fact that he’s really old, and also has a love-hate relationship with the franchise that made his name but also reduced his opportunities as an actor (although late in his career he won Emmys for The Practice and Boston Legal).  He’s the guy who will make a self-congratulatory movie like The Captains but then turn a cold shoulder to individual Trek fans.  A new promo for Star Trek: The Video Game highlights this dichotomy as Shatner provides fan service by reenacting his famous battle with the Gorn from “Arena”, but is still about highlighting “Look what a good sport I am!” even though he’s collecting a paycheck for selling the upcoming video game, which re-imagining Shatner out of his famous role.  It’s interesting to watch.

Hit the jump to check out the promo, and click here to pre-order the game on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.  Star Trek: The Video Game is due out on April 23rd.

Here’s the fight from the original series.  The promo should have ended with a Metron congratulating Shatner for showing mercy.

Jesus Matt your cynical man. I admire your intelligence from past articles but what happened to you as a child? You see everything with a glass half empty and what little is in the glass is poison!
First of all this must be a slow news day to even cover a commercial, and a really slow news day for you to write an angry article about it. I’ve met shatter and most of the cast as a reporter myself in the 90′s and I found them all to be good if not flawed people. How shocking he did this job for money! Wow he’s an actor not mother Teresa. Thank you for lifting the veil for me I just naturally assumed Shatner and the entire cast had given up their missionary work in the 60′s to work on cheap cardboard sets for the sheer joy.

Have to agree with James here. I mean, at first I thought Matt was trying to be sarcastic and funny. But then it became clear that he was just being cynical.

      Lighten up, man.

Or better yet, light one up and smoke it… and chill out.

I like the add… very much!

What’s wrong with Shatner charging for the add? He’s an actor. That’s how actors make a living.

Hope he do some more of these.

Wow – Matt you are a grump. Your heart must be pure as gold to see so well into the sinful attitudes and motives of others. May it not be “measured unto you” as you have measured unto others.

Its getting harder and harder to click-through to any articles written by Matt. Does anyone have oversight on Matt? Because someone needs to tell him to dial back the cynicism that taints every single article he writes. I don’t need him to approve of the things he covers, but I would like some professional distance when he does cover them.

I get having an edge–but Matt sounds like a frustrated young man. It affects my readership habits on Collider.

I was really excited about this article because I skipped straight to the video, and thought it was awesome.

….then I read Goldberg’s comments. Is he trying to steal other peoples joy? Does he have a boss who can fire him or tell him to reign in the snark? If I was evaluating him based off of his writing on this site: he hates everything except indie films, he doesn’t enjoy fun, but he thinks he’s hilarious and super clever. In which case, he’s totally out of touch with the reader of this blog. We like movies and fun, and we find his commentary groan worthy not clever.

For us to enjoy his commentary we have to be on the same page as him, but we’re not because he’s writing as if he’s on staff at Pitchfork, not Collider.

Compare Frosty to Goldberg. Frosty actually likes the movies that this site covers and reviews. Therefore, we relate to him and enjoy his commentary and insight. Matt Goldberg HATES the movies this site covers. Therefore, his commentary and snark are literally offensive to the tastes of the readers of this blog.

you take the internet too seriously.

Can anyone recommend a movie news site that features straight reporting without the editorial angle? There are only so many 20-something insecure idiots I can handle in a day.

  • Guest

“Collecting a paycheck”? Is that not exactly what you are doing, writing these kind of snarky articles about subjects you clearly don’t care anything for?

Btw that Gorn is probably only in it for the money too you know (hell he even did a cameo in The Big Bang Theory!), no need to only hate on the Shatner.

  • Nerdgasm

I actually enjoy Matt Goldberg from time to time and this article wasn’t all that bad. Yes he can push to far but again its not a “MOVIE NEWS SITE” it’s a blog so if you are looking for non editorial stuff coming here then you are a fucking idiot and have no right to complain about the shit you read here. As for SEAN : You just did what you complained about Matt doing, Speaking for the Mass as if you are the Mass…you’re an idiot and you are welcome for opening your eyes. Not to mention an editorial writer and a guy (Frosty) who is always hob nobbing with the stars is very different. Frosty cannot bash or say negative thigns about the movies cause he’s always seeing the stars and having one go “Yo…what you said about my movie wasn’t nice” during an interview is an unwanted fair. there is etiquette to what Frosty does as the likes of Letterman and Leno who too also LOVE every single movie they see.

    • MisterED

Fuck off. This site is not pasting editorials on every article that is featured in it. Read the rest of the articles and you’ll notice that they’re informative.

This one here is yet another example of Matt being a massive asshole and a troll.

Never reading another review from that guy.

  • Shaun

Hey Goldberg… If you don’t like Shatner why the hell do you feel the need to write about him? This ad was a hoot, and Shatner’s had a great sense of humor in the work he does. Or at least he has since doing SNL way back in 1986. His supposed “love-hate” relationship with Trek would seem to mostly be a thing of the pass. Trek novels (yeah, I realize he didn’t really write those), the “Captains” movie, the recent “Shatner’s World” tour, the Oscars appearance, now this commercial, and he still continues to make con appearances around the world. Looks like he’s come to terms with Trek to me!

In conclusion, Matt, everyone here is correct. You are a cynical asshole and a troll.

  • melanarus

Matt’s got a lot of fans! This idiot loves to take shots at actors in all his posts on trailers and things and takes a crack at old Shat here. Didn’t I see Matt’s smiling dumb fuck face painted as a zombie for some movie a few months ago? Matt takes some of those snarky remarks you posted above and go look at those photos of yourself from as a zombie and think how lucky you are not to be a chinese takeout delivery boy right now.

Did anybody see Matt ACTUALLY give GI JOE Retaliation a B- review with nothing cynical or negative towards any of the actors or anyone involved in that POS? Yet every other review site has reviews with at least some criticism of the movie. Yet I remember how much hate he was posting for the MIB 3 trailer trashing it to hell. Why so much love for GI Joe Matt?

Matt must own Collider.com, I just don’t see why they haven’t fired this guy yet and replaced him with a someone who can do the job RIGHT and someone who hasn’t burned all his Movie bridges/connections by trashing so many people that no one wants to give him an interview or set visit since he’s such a dumb fuck.

Is that you Matt posting above under the name “Strong Enough”? What a joke you are!

It was hilarious. I loved it.
