Way back in February 2014, Girls star Adam Driver was rumored to be taking the villain role in Star Wars: Episode VII. We didn’t have any details or official confirmation beyond that news, but the speculation ran rampant on what kind of villain the lanky actor would play.
It turns out we’ve known for a while except a mask was in the way. Vanity Fair has released new Star Wars: The Force Awakens pictures for Star Wars Day, and they show Driver is playing Kylo Ren, the cloaked figure with the new lightsaber we saw in the first trailer. We also got a better look at him in the second trailer and his costume at Star Wars Celebration last month.
As you can see from the image below, the biting cold doesn’t seem to bother him too much, and perhaps he and the Stormtroopers behind him are on Hoth. Then again, when the first trailer was released, we thought the characters were on Tatooine in the first trailer when it turned out they were actually on a new planet called Jakku. There’s no reason why there can’t be more than one ice planet. All we know is that the planet houses the First Order’s secret base.
Speaking of assumptions, it’s easy to assume that Kylo Ren is a Sith due to his dark robes and red lightsaber, but we shouldn’t be so fast too judge. While he may be bad, he may not be a full-fledged Sith. Either way, it’s good to get a look at the guy beneath the mask, and Driver still comes off as plenty threatening in this image.
