Last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, J.J. Abrams dropped a pretty major bit of news concerting Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and for the first time in I don't know how long, it wasn't just marketing drivel. As Entertainment Weekly reports, the director discussed meeting Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the hugely popular musical Hamilton, after one of the performances of Miranda's stage spectacular, and the two hit it off. Playfully, Miranda suggested that if Abrams needed some new music for the upcoming Star Wars sequel, he'd love to do it.

Well, as it turns out, he did write some music for The Force Awakens, and not just some random bit of orchestral backing to an X-wing fight or what have you. Miranda came in to collaborate with Abrams and compose a new piece of music for a now assumed cantina scene that will appear in the seventh Star Wars film. Though John Williams has been handling most composing duties for the new film, Abrams noted that he didnt want to remake the cantina song, and that's where Miranda came in to collaborate with Abrams on the new cantina theme.

This speaks to not only the seemingly universal love for Star Wars but also Abrams' tendency to have an eye for talent, and the ability to give talent free space. This was apparent from early on, considering his casting of the likes of John Boyega, Adam Driver, and Daisy Ridley, three actors who have had minimal on-screen time on the big screen but who make clear, distinct impressions with the time given. Miranda has similarly only begun to make an impact on the world outside of the New York theater scene and other major cities, but with this, he makes a decidedly genius move and has suddenly made one of the most anticipated parts of the new Star Wars a piece of music that likely won't last for longer than 2 minutes.
