Are you tired hearing about Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet? No? How? The marketing campaign for the upcoming film has done a hugely impressive job of stirring up anticipation for J.J. Abrams‘ imminent follow-up to Return of the Jedi (or Revenge of the Sith, depending on who you talk to) but we’re just about hitting exhaustion level at this point, and we’re still over a month off until the film actually hits theaters nationwide. Following the international trailers and poster that hit last week, Entertainment Weekly has now released its four separate cover images for its upcoming double-issue dedicated to The Force Awakens, featuring the likes of John Boyega, Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, and the duo of R2D2 and C3PO. You can check out all four cover images below.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m as excited to see what Abrams does with this material as the next guy, and the fact that the director, who did superb work with Star Trek, Mission Impossible, and, most notably, Super 8, has picked performers like Boyega, Girls breakout Adam Driver, and Domnhall Gleeson, son of the great Brendan Gleeson, speaks to the immediacy of not just the graphics and design, but the drama of the latest Star Wars. I honest-to-god still get chills every time I see Kylo Ren, but this hubbub of combing over every inch of the marketing materials — images, trailers, toys, posters, etc. — to get ahead of Abrams’ film before the thing actually gets released is, to me, true and utter nonsense. And the fact that reportage like this is implicit in that obsessive sort of analysis is not completely lost on me.
Regardless, Abrams film will be out in five or six weeks, and there will be plenty of new elements of the film itself to pour over to try to find out what will be coming in Rian Johnson‘s eighth installment or, for that matter, Colin Trevorrow‘s ninth. For now, take a good glance at our heroes in what will (hopefully) be one of the last bits of marketing we’ll get before The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th.
