As evidenced by last week’s debut set photo, principal photography is now underway on a brand new Star Wars film.  That’s an exciting prospect in and of itself, and while we really don’t know much about Star Wars: Episode VII other than the fact that the original trilogy cast is returning and it’s a sequel to Return of the Jedi (obviously), it’s neat to think that right now, at this very moment, a new Star Wars movie is being made.  To mark the beginning of production, director J.J. Abrams shared an encouraging note with his cast and crew, and the note has now made its way online.  If you’re looking for story clues or Easter Eggs, you’ll be sorely disappointed, but it’s nice to see how much Abrams cares about the many, many folks that are working hard to bring this film to fruition.

Hit the jump to check out the note and to read Abrams’ words of encouragement yourself.  The film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny BakerStar Wars: Episode VII arrives in theaters on December 18, 2015.

Check out Abrams’ note in full below (via ScreenCrush), followed by a transcription in case you can’t quite make out the handwriting.

Dearest Cast and Crew, What an honor it is to work beside all of you, on Star Wars Ep VII. I can’t thank you enough, for all work past and future. Let’s take good care of not just ourselves, but of each other. Amazing, but true: the world awaits this film. Let’s give ‘em something GREAT. xo JJ

Still finding it difficult to get hyped up for this. Maybe when there’s a poster or a teaser. Good to see that Abrams has his heart in the right place, I have no doubt that he’ll do at least a decent job.

Maybe it’s better not to get that hyped up. Let it all go subtly at the start and then get surprised by the end result:)

      • The Flobbit

That’s like saying: I have zero expectations for this movie, so if it’s mediocre I’ll be impressed.

      • warew

        Hyped up?! THIS IS STARWARS

Look at that scrawl, it’s barely legible.

you must not see many doctor’s prescription slips…

Isn’t that a good thing, in the long run?

After having to take care of my mom while she was sick – it would help if they knew how to write clearly – on two occasions she was almost given the wrong medication because no one could read the note – JJ Abrams writing is a beauty by comparison!

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

True enough, the fact that I was able to read it from start to finish says it all.

    • Agent777

I’m not a Abram’s fan at all, but my hand writings crap and JFK couldn’t write unless it was with a typewriter, his handwriting was so awful.

  • YodaRocks

    Wow! What handwriting.

  • God’s Diamond

I hope the story is good, cuz with the exception of the girl, all the younger cast are fugly imo. At least the established names they have are decent looking.

    • the king of comedy

who cares about looks, this isn`t suppossed to be Twilight, I think the cast made some great aditions, and I`m glad they are not relying on known faces for this movie

      • Agent777

Adam Driver is the new “let’s just cast him in anything” guy so they are known faces, young and old. Either they work or they don’t.

      • the king of comedy

I disagree, general movie audiences have no idea who this guy is, he`s been showing up lately in news because he`ll be the next villain in a Star Wars movie, but I`m pretty sure most people wouldn`t be able to name one of his movies.

      • Pk

He’s well known for acting in girls the tv show and inside Llewelyn Davis

      • the king of comedy

Of course he has some acting expierience but most people still don`t know much about him, Inside Lewyn Davis isn`t a movie that well known to movie audiences and his role in that movie was a small one, and I think Girls isn`t one of the most viewed shows on TV at the moment, truth be told I have´nt seen Girls so I don`t know how big his role is in that movie, but still he hasn`t made something iconic to make him a known face to general moviegoers, maybe that would change after ep VII.

      • Jackie Jormpjomp

True about Driver. Every few years there is another crop of actors and actresses just shove down out throats to see if the catch on.

      • James Franco

It isn’t necessary to have cast of actors who have movie star good looks but likeable faces wouldn’t hurt. Just look at the cast of Jurassic world. Now that’s a movie to look forward to…

      • the king of comedy

From what I`ve heard actors such as Adam Driver do have enough charisma and presence even if they are not the best goodlooking actors in hollywood at the moment, I never had problem with the casting decisions J.J. Abraams made, the cast of the last Star Trek movies were fantastic, so I have faith in this movie

      • James Franco

I hope that’s true. Anyways I’m holding all judgements until the first trailer comes out

      • God’s Diamond

You thought the people in twilight were attractive? I sure as heck didn’t

    • James Franco

The girl looks pretty ordinary. Nothing to brag about. Would have preferred hailee stienfeld or Chloe moretz

      • dolphin558

Those two you mentioned aren’t considered attractive.

      • James franco

Are you fucking kidding me?? They are drop dead gorgeous!

      • doctor_robot

        eh… drop dead gorgeous? no.

    • DavidisALLright

      Oscar Issac is ‘ugly’ now?

    • DavidisALLright

  • Steven Ray Morris

No, “May the Force be with you?”

    • Agent777

A pretty weak note. Could easily be to the cast of Jurassic World.

  • Agent777

I’m sure it will be fun to make, but at this point I just want to see the originals in HD still. I end Star Wars at Jedi (though the prequels weren’t all bad).

  • Tom

At least he cares more about making a good movie than George Lucas ever did.

  • Farrell

I can’t believe a fucking hand written pep note is considered “news”. Next they’ll be reporting what JJ ate for breakfast.

    • ResurrectRider

      I’d read it….

  • DEADP00L

Give us something great? To do that you’d need to make a movie that doesn’t involve lens flares and wonky camera angles.

  • Joseph M

    Harrison Ford’s reply:
What film? Oh, yeah. Hmmmmm, Hey, get that fuckin’ camera out my face!

  • evinrude

What’s the watermark across the page? It’s standard now to watermark script pages and call sheets to control leaks on productions like this one,but this is like watermarking a greeting card.

  • whoisyermommy

why is this news??? and who the fuck can read that handwriting?

  • The Flobbit

Yes, Abrams, we ARE waiting on tenterhooks for this movie. I am laying aside my dislike for your previous work, and giving you a blank cheque. So if you DON’T give us something great you will find yourself facing a large, angry lynch mob. So please, no stupid cheesy one-liners, no lens flares, no uneeded twists, no unnecessary CGI, no injokes, no meta, no Jar Jar, and NO. MYSTERY. BOX.

    You can do it.

    • Tex Avery

To be fair, the chessy one-liners, uneeded twists, injokes were Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci’s fault, that seems to be a problem in The Amazing Spider-man 2 (a movie they also wrote). Hopefully, this time around it’s being written by the great Lawrence Kasdan (who wrote Empire, Jedi and Raiders of the lost ark). The lens flare is not justifiable, though.

      • The Flobbit

Larry Kasdan doesn’t have that much reign, as I’ve been hearing. and Abrams is bucking the influence of Kathleen Kennedy and the old crew…
        It doesn’t inspire much confidence.
