J.J. Abrams Talks ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Deleted Scenes and His Love of ‘Episode IV’

     December 11, 2015

When I found out I’d be talking to J.J. Abrams at the Star Wars: The Force Awakens press junket I instantly started thinking about my questions. Almost immediately I realized it would be hard to ask things he hasn’t been asked. After all, since he landed his dream job, he’s spoken again and again about his love of the franchise, what it meant to direct Harrison Ford on the set of a Star Wars movie, and every other question you can think of. Rather than have him say the same quotes again and again, I wanted to try and ask a few new things, and also have fun with the interview. The other thing to know is…since no one has seen the film outside of the cast and Disney executives, it’s hard to ask specific questions about the movie since everyone is so guarded with their answers.

Knowing all this, when I sat down with Abrams I immediately asked about his first cut of the film, deleted scenes, if BB-8 is a boy or a girl, whether Han or Greedo shot first, his rank of the six previous Star Wars movies, his best and worst day on set, and a few other things. While you’re not going to learn any of the secrets of The Force Awakens, I think you’ll have fun seeing what Abrams had to say. Check it out below.

Finally, if you missed my video interviews with John Boyega or Gwendoline Christie, click the links.

J.J. Abrams:

  • How long was his first cut? Over 2 hours 30 min.
  • How many deleted scenes did he have in The Force Awakens?
  • Is BB-8 a boy or a girl?
  • Who shot first Han or Greedo?
  • Is he was a Jedi what color lightsaber would he have?
  • What’s his rank of the Star Wars movies?
  • Best and worst day on set?
