Star Wars: The Force Awakens might be tearing up the box office, but it’s old news when it comes to the Star Wars saga. We know who lives, who dies, and so on and so forth, so we want to get cracking to the other movies in development. Surprisingly, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been able to shoot without much disturbance, which proves that a logline and an official image will do wonders to sate the fans’ appetite.

But they’re obviously hungry for what will happen in the next chapter in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. There are currently no plot details for Star Wars: Episode VIII, but star John Boyega did divulge to Vogue [via CS]:

“[We’re] just starting work on ‘Star Wars VIII,’ the next film, so I’m back to keeping secrets again,” Boyega said. “It’s great. Much darker, but we’re very excited.”

Fans are expecting a darker chapter since The Empire Strikes Back is the darkest chapter of the original trilogy, but personally, I’m hoping that director Rian Johnson doesn’t fall into the same trap as Abrams. I understand that Abrams had a job to do, which was provide a security blanket to fans, but now that the film is a mammoth hit, it’s time to take some chances rather than just ape what’s familiar from popular Star Wars movies.

Boyega also didn’t say whether or not his fight with Kylo Ren will leave him with any cybernetic enhancements, but he did reveal he has a “more physical” role in the sequel:

“No, for [Force Awakens] we really just took it scene by scene, there wasn’t a huge regime,” Boyega continues. “My part in the next film will be much more physical so I might be in the gym a bit more.”

It will be interesting to see what Finn is up to in Episode VIII. The path is slightly clearer for Rey, but where will he go? Will he join the Resistance? Will he seek out Rey? Will he have another confrontation with Captain Phasma? Sound off with your theories in the comments section.

Star Wars: Episode VIII opens May 26, 2017.
