Last August, we learned that all six Star Wars films would be hitting Blu-ray in fall 2011 (we also learned that it would be the “Special Edition” versions of the original trilogy, because why give people what they want, when they’ll buy what they don’t want first?). Now Engadget is reporting that they’ve received an invite to an announcement about the upcoming Blu-rays at this year’s Consumer’s Electronic Show. What will be announced? Special features? A firm release date? An acknowledgment that Han shot first but Lucas doesn’t care? We’ll find out Thursday when Lucasfilm makes their announcement regarding the upcoming set.

I just hope that for once Lucas doesn’t put together something just for a cash grab and expect his now dwindling fan-base to buy a whole new set in the future.
Lucas does not care about his fan base, “dwindling” or otherwise. There will never be a release of the theatrical versions of the Star Wars trilogy because he believes the special editions are the definitive versions. He doesn’t care what fanboys think, and no amount of whining will ever change that.
We need someone like Bill Gates to buy the original movies and remaster them.
