Marvel has unveiled the cover art for the first of two Star Wars comic series launching later this year, Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire. Since Disney owns every major IP under the sun, this comic will lead directly into J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens film, which opens in December.

As you can see from the cover art (created by Phil Noto), this Marvel Comics Event Series will likely act as a bridge between Return of the Jedi (aka Episode VI) and The Force Awakens (aka Episode VII). All of the principal characters from the Star Wars universe appear, and they look to be wearing their same wardrobe from the end of Return of the Jedi—there’s even an Ewok thrown in for good measure. And the subtitle “Shattered Empire” refers to the state of the Empire at the end of George Lucas’ initial trilogy.

Will this comic series fill in the gaps between where we find the characters at the end of Jedi and where we pick up with them in The Force Awakens? I don’t imagine Abrams would let a comic series ruin the intrigue of his film, but I bet some dots will be connected in the comic.

Not much else is known about the Star Wars comic series at this time, but I’m sure both Star Wars and Marvel fans alike will be eager to pore over its pages as they eagerly await the next film. Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens launches in September of this year, so those interested will have plenty of time to pick up the comic and memorize it by the time The Force Awakens opens on December 18th.
