So it look like we won’t have to wait until Star Wars Day (May 4th) to get the Star Wars: Episode VII cast.  After months and months of speculation, the cast has officially been announced to coincide with the table read (when the word would have leaked anyway).  Some of the names we knew, some are a complete surprise, and others are a welcome return (we knew R2-D2 would be back, but so is the original man in the can, Kenny Baker!)

Hit the jump for to see the Star Wars: Episode VII cast.  The film opens December 18, 2015.

star-wars-episode-7-castHere’s the statement from StarWars.com:

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Looking at this cast list, it’s funny to see what all of the rumors amounted to.  Let’s break it down:

star-wars-episode-7-castHarrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew and Adam Driver (Girls) were all but officially announced before today.  While knew R2-D2 would be back, I’m glad Kenny Baker is on board because they could have gone a CG-only route.  Anthony Daniels is also a nice addition, although I assume his work as C-3P0 will be limited to voice acting.  However, he’s not a huge surprise because how can you have R2 without 3P0?  That would be sacrilege.

As far as who had previously been rumored for the movie, we had heard about John Boyega (Attack the Block) since mid-March, and yesterday his participation became highly likely since he dropped out of starring in a Jesse Owens biopic.

We also heard yesterday that Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) might be on board, although his theater commitments were a potential obstacle.  Clearly, this turned out not to be the cast, and now these two talented actors are starring.

And then there are those who flew under everyone’s radar, which is kind of hilarious when you think about how much time and effort was put into trying to uncover the cast.  Looking back through all of our Star Wars casting reports, Daisy Ridley (Mr. Selfridge), Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close), and Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) weren’t mentioned once, and I don’t recall seeing their names pop up on the other movie websites that were constantly covering this movie.

Here are the names that did pop up:

star-wars-episode-7-castSome of these actors were seriously considered, some were been briefly considered, and some may have never had any shot at all and their mention was either complete fiction and/or their agent boosting their client’s overall profile.  As Ronan pointed out, everyone had read for this movie.  At this point, we don’t know how close any of these aforementioned actors were to signing on.  Maybe we’ll find out one day.

But as for the cast we have here and now, I like them all (except for Ridley, whom I have no opinion on because I haven’t seen any of her work).  I hope it sends the Star Wars geeks out to see Attack the Block and Inside Llewyn Davis if they haven’t already.

However, the speculation never really ends.  Will Andy Serkis be playing a role without digital makeup or do motion capture?  I would assume the latter, but who knows!  And what do we know about these new characters?  Nothing!  But that won’t stop us from trying to know every little thing about the movie before we see the movie, which is exactly what Abrams wants, because who can resist the lure of the mystery box?

I’m just glad we can stop with the casting speculation…Until the next Star Wars movie.

Andy Serkis as the son of Jar Jar Binks. Bravo JJ!

    • Littertray

Would have thought Adam and his amazing ears would have been better suited for that role. :-P

    • bleeeehhh

Ohhhhhh goodnes yer not funny please just stop go back to gamestop and masturbate

  • Lee Harvey Cobblepot

Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis and Max von Sydow are all excellent actors. Without any sort of character description or reference it’s hard to have any further opinions on this.

    • Kyle Chandler

Still enough to get a LITTLE excited :)

    • the king of comedy

Andy Serkis and Max Von Sydow are legends, I`m pleasently surprised they are in this movie, Oscar Isaac is a great actor but we need to see more of him before calling him one of the best

      • dudeyo

See CHE, Body of Lies, Robin Hood and Drive, and then tell me all the people you saw were the same. In one he plays a Colombian, in the other an Arab interpreter, in the other the freakin’ King of England, and in the other a former con man. He may not be popular, but for people who’ve seen his work, he’s earned the right to be called “one of the best”.

      • scheebles

And then he goes and wails on one of the best soundtracks in years. The guy is versatile and engaging.

      • Eric Wilkinson

Oscar Isaac will fit in perfectly. He’ s a great actor.

Finally the casting rumors will end!

    • GK

not yet..still the second female lead!

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

        NOOOOO!!!! So close!

  • Mark

    Well, alrighty then!

  • Kevin Carter

Finally. A Star Wars article without “reportedly” or “rumored”…

    • snooorree

      Exactly

  • Ashtalon

I’m excited for the announcement of John Boyega, but Max von Sydow is a fantastic choice for the Star Wars universe.

    • 80sRobot

Definitely on Sydow. His casting carries on the tradition of casting someone esteemed like Sir. Alec Guinness and Christopher Lee.

      • aceshigh

Don’t forget the great Peter Cushing.

  • The Pop Pessimist

I want Billy Dee Williams!!! but this will definitely do :)

  • MIXTER

YESSSS!!!! Finally!! Its awesome to see this pic, old and new. Andy Serkis!! Max Von Sydow! And the original crew. Thats one sexy room full of people!

    • Leo Spaceman

Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill aren’t exactly bringing the sexy any more.

      • Matt Clayton

Carrie Fisher is still looking good, although that was after Disney got a personal trainer for her. Hamill is in decent shape too.

  • BrostavoFring

Does this mean John Boyega won’t be Black Panther :(

    • Atlasshruggedmyass

The truth is a Marvel studios is to chickenshit to spend the money on a black panther move because they don’t's risk that much capitol on a black superhero film.

Because I remeber so clearly at comic con a few years ago the crowd being shocked and pissed When Marvel announced that campy-cheesy edger wright “Ant-Man” film Instead of Black Panther.

      • Kyle Chandler

I’m actually really excited for Ant-Man, and I’ve really enjoyed Edgar Wright’s film’s.

That said, a Black Panther Movie needs to happen, and I think there is a decent chance it will. It wouldn’t be until after avengers 2 anyway, so there might be a chance Boyega could still be up for the role (I think he’d be a good choice!)

      • dguvnorspecial1

at the end of iron man 2 there’s a shield map displaying things happening around the world(mexico for thor’s hammer etc).one of them was africa and rumoured by favreau to be black panther

      • Amanda

I don’t think they are too “chickenshit” to make a black panther movie. They just decided to go with the ones who will guarantee them money. I think we might get one but it’ll be way down the line, maybe if they make a successful Doctor Strange movie, then they’ll consider making something will less of a guarantee in return.

      • STAR-LORD #ROUGE SQUAD

I agree Marvel will introduce him in AOU. But they should have gave him a movie hopefully the could add him to phase 3 like they did with Falcon.

      • enderandrew

Kevin Feige has discussed this openly in the past. Ant Man only happened because Edgar Wright wanted to make the movie, came up with a great pitch, pushed for it, and kept revising the idea to make it even better.

If someone else had pitched a great Black Panther movie, I’m sure it would happen.

      • Dwight Campbell

        1. Learn to spell as it will help you land a job and not be unemployed.
        2. Marvel is in the business of entertaining fans and making money. Black Panther is not in the business of either.
        3. Ant-Man and Edgar Wright being campy and cheesy demonstrates either a lack of clear thought, years of drug abuse, or slight mental retardation on your part. Please seek help and do not breed whatsoever.

        Thanks,
        Concerned Citizen

      • Atlasshruggedmyass

Hey moron, can you name a single recent box-office success
Edger wright has ever had?! didn’t think so, STFU!
And yes on screen “Ant Man’ will come across as cheesy and campy which is why they think “Edger Wrights” quirky style is
        a good fit for it.

The brand name alone will get breakout laughs alone when the trailer plays in theaters just like ‘cowboys and aliens’ trailer did. And i was right about the flop that became swell. I used to work as a intern for a box-office analyst dipsh!t, so i know what I’m talking about.

    • Kyle Chandler

It means he is probably going to be more bankable after Star Wars #aNewerHope

  • rc3i

My boy John Boyega finally getting the love he deserves!

    • Conor

      He’s twenty-two.

      • scheebles

His debut, which was an amazing performance, was over three years ago and he hasn’t gotten a major role since. rc3i is right to say that it’s about time he got a chance to show his chops.

    • Nico

I wonder if he’s going to lose his english accent for the character? Looking forward to this movie, Immensely !

  • BrostavoFring

In all seriousness that is a seriously cool and talented new crop of names. Interesting choices for sure.

  • Jan

Where are the fuckin’ females? Carrie Fisher doesn’t even count so that just leaves the unknown Daisy Ridley….

    • herpderp

Maybe you can ask C3PO to service you behind the moisture farm

    • yrulaughing418

the prequels and original trilogy were short on females as well, basically limited to just Padme and Leia

    • GK

CHILL…there is the second female lead they’re still casting!

  • Devin Reed

    Hell YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tom

Finally! Very good cast in my opinion.

  • Michael Horne

John Williams will be back! Best news!

    • Tom

It was announced a while ago… It’s just reminder.

      • Michael Horne

Yeah but I missed it before :-) Cast list is fab.

  • pickaname

Andy Serkis? ANDY SERKIS? FUCK. YES.

    • Kyle Chandler

Right!? Easily (weirdly?) the most exciting part of the casting news for me.

      • pickaname

It really is. What would make it even better is if, for once, he gets to play a live action character instead of performance-cap (even though of course, he’s the king of that arena)…But it’s just that, as a pure actor he’s so unbelievable that I wanna see more of his live action work (I went to see him in a play in London once; blew me away)

    • The Flobbit

It’s too good. Too freaking perfect! Here’s hoping he plays some dastardly villain, or maybe mocaps some alien assassin.

    • GK

      1.A new cgi character
      2.Greedo jr
      3.Jar Jar Binks relative

  • yrulaughing418

Oscar Isaac is an amazing actor, hopefully we’ll get to see him fight at some point

unlike his small role in The Bourne Legacy where he plays a physically enhanced agent but never appears in an action sequence

was also hoping for Ryan Gosling to have a role but I guess just one actor from Drive is enough

    • Jules

Gosling is to busy with his arthouse work that generates very minimal box office returns, diminishing his place as a movie star that brings in audiences.

      • yrulaughing418

arthouse movies that aren’t profitable and also aren’t very good
Only God Forgives is a hipster “you just don’t get the point of it” film with no real depth or quality

  • João Paulo

Max Von Sydow for the big bad of the movie.

  • tom

NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS ON CASTING JUST REPORT THE NEWS!!!!

    • DodgeHickey

Pot calling the kettle black here…

  • Drake

    About friggin time!
    Also, Andy Serkis :D…

  • Tracy

Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings alums? Cool beans……

  • bidi

gotta join the Andy Serkis love. i hope he’s playing a good guy though. what are the odds that he’s a mocap character?

    • bidi

also have to add my enthusiasm over Domnhall Gleeson. really enjoyed him in everything he’s done. he also seems like a Kenobi to me…

      • jmes

I dunno about you, but Gleeson screams Skywalker to me. That being said, with the whole Jedi celebacy thing, and no mention of an adult female character on this list – along with the apparent toss-out of the EU, I’m willing to admit even my own speculation is bound to be wildly off.

Suffice to say – So excited about this castttt!!!!!

    • Seth

He’s portraying Outer Space, all of it, and he will receive an Academy Award nomination for it.

  • Aquartertoseven

    Ah!

*Uses google to see who the fuck half of these people are*

    • 80sRobot

The only “unknown” actor in this bunch is Daisy Ridley. The others, while some of them are not “famous-famous,” are known by critics for their stellar acting in popular movies. But even Ridley has acting experience in TV and film.

      • Aquartertoseven

And the black guy is basically unknown. Yes he was in Attack the Block but that didn’t even make $6m worldwide so to most of the world he’s a nobody too. REALLY glad that Serkis is in it though, that guy’s a boss, and Isaac is supposed to be good (haven’t seen his films personally).

      • signinwith

I’m sure you already know this, but I feel like I need to remind you: I’m pretty sure J.J. Abrams and company were focused on finding the absolute perfect ACTORS for the roles based on their acting talent rather than how famous they are. And each and every single one of these guys (save for Ridley, cause I haven’t seen her in anything) are fucking brilliant. As a guy who’s seen each of them in pretty much everything they’ve done, I guarantee you that.

      • Aquartertoseven

I’m not arguing their ability, the discussion was about how famous some of them were.

      • scheebles

Because, as in life, fame takes top priority.

      • Aquartertoseven

No, where did all of you idiots come from? Some place where people can’t read? My original comment stated, in a comical way if I don’t say so myself, that these are most nobodies. That’s it. No inclination of fame=talent, just that they’re basically unknowns.

      • scheebles

Well first, calling people idiots seems a bit childish. After all, you’re the one who referred to Boyega as “the black guy” (which doesn’t sound ignorant at all). Second, as 80sRobot said, most of these people are NOT unknowns. Maybe to you, but not to the world. Boyega is little known, but still has a huge cult following from Attack the Block. Isaac was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor last year and was King John in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, as well as having major roles in Drive and Sucker Punch. Domhnall Gleeson is well known to Potter-fans and just starred in About Time and Anna Karenina. Adam Driver just got nominated for an Emmy for Girls and is rumored to play Nightwing in Batman vs. Superman. I’ll just assume you know who Von Sydow is.

      • Aquartertoseven

You see, if you had any integrity, you’d man up and say ‘my bad’. But no, you’re digging yourself further into the hole you’ve created. With people attacking my comments without actually reading/understanding my comments, you should be able to understand why I got a little annoyed.

Secondly, way to make race an issue, the new cast are all white, therefore it’s far easier to differentiate one of them if they’re different in appearance to everyone else. Again, if you had read my original comment you’d know that the entire topic is about how they’re not famous, therefore using his name would be ineffectual.

My entire point was that these people are unknown to the majority of the world, in that if you showed a picture of them to people, all but a few would not recognise them. Domhnall Gleeson is better known than some of the others but even those films you mentioned didn’t make more than $90m worldwide, so yeah, he’s not really particularly famous either.

Please stop embarrassing yourself, I don’t enjoy owning someone that has shot himself in the foot again and again.

      • scheebles

“Again, if you had read my original comment you’d know that the entire topic is about how they’re not famous, therefore using his name would be ineffectual.” Using his proper name that’s been given in the article many times doesn’t support my argument, so I won’t use it. Sound rhetoric.

It wasn’t a race issue, my friend, it was the fact that his name is listed in the article and you still decided not to use it, which made you look ignorant. Again, not ignorant about race, just ignorant in general.

As for not “manning up”, I understood the original comment, but what we other posters are saying is that A. they aren’t “nobodies” and complete unknowns and B. to focus on that aspect of the announcement really was kind of silly.

Oh and just for future reference, if you ever have to tell somebody that you “owned” them, then you probably didn’t “own” them. As Teddy Roosevelt said, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” Cheers, pal!

      • Aquartertoseven

Again, he who can’t put racial issues aside, even saying their names after the announcement, people have NO IDEA WHO THEY ARE. That’s the point of the film, it’s going to make them well known.

        You’re a poster??

I made a joke, damn you must be fun at parties. But still, some of these are nobodies to most people. Your focus on making mountains out of molehills is silly.

Seriously though, it doesn’t fill me with joy to typally annihilate you, however masochistic you present yourself as.

      • scheebles

Did I not just say it wasn’t a race issue? You seem stuck on that one. Another good quote for you: “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” (Since you’re so good at google I bet you can probably find out on your own where that’s from!)

I didn’t have a problem at all with the first post. Thought it was kind of funny. And even my comment about fame was tongue-in-cheek, but then you just got so intent to insult other people that I decided to point out some things.

Oh, one more thing. If you’re going to insult people’s grammar, you might want to make sure your grammar is correct. I think you were looking for “masochistically.” But good on you for trying to use big boy words! Stay angry, compadre!

      • Aquartertoseven

You called me a racist, just because you quickly tried to deflect away from that, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I object to such accusations and honestly, you shouldn’t be so sensitive and throw terms like that around.

“To focus on that aspect of the announcement really was kind of silly.”

“I didn’t have a problem at all with the first post.”

        Hypocrisy.

If your first comment was tongue-in-cheek, you should’ve clarified, with the typical “/sarcasm” or something. This is the internet, tone is difficult to understand in text.

Both terms are fine. If you’re going to go after someone’s grammar, make sure they screwed up first otherwise you’ll get owned. Again, in your case.

      • scheebles

My, my you’re touchy. I never called you a racist. I said you were ignorant. You can be ignorant about a lot of things. In this case I was referring to the fact that you not using the actor’s name was a sign of being ignorant (or pretending to be ignorant as it seems now) regarding his name.

I didn’t have a problem really with the initial post, because the joke seemed to be that YOU didn’t know who the actors were. And your humor about that was amusing. But then you started calling people nobodies and such, which still wasn’t quite a big deal. Calling people idiots is where I decided to step in.

And no, both terms are not fine. You ARE masochistic. You PRESENT YOURSELF masochistically. Just like you ARE intelligent. You PRESENT YOURSELF intelligently. Although, not quite sure if that applies in this case.

      • Aquartertoseven

When you said ignorant, you meant racist, we both know it.

Pretending to be ignorant? So after an announcement like this, everybody now instantly knows who John someone is? You’re kidding yourself and really fixating on this. Why does it bother you that he’s as of right now a nobody? Are you related to him or something?

I was being bombarded with people that didn’t understand my comment, nor did they even read it properly. You added fuel to the fire and you know it.

Trust me, both work. Adding “ally” on the end sounds better, but both work.

      • scheebles

You have quite the victim complex. I never called you a racist, nor was I implying it. You WERE being ignorant by not writing his name when it is the first name on the list. Even if you really didn’t know it, you could have scrolled up and written it. But, as you admitted earlier, “using [his] name would be ineffectual.” The implication there being that you were aware of his name and decided to not use it to further your stance. You were being flippant by feigning ignorance.

And no, they don’t both work. I’m a copyeditor. Masochistic is an adjective. It describes a noun. Masochistically is an adverb. It modifies verbs and adjectives. The verb of that sentence being “present.” What did I do? I presented myself. How did I present myself? Masochistically. Well, according to you that is.

It’s funny that you are trying to say that people bombard you when just flipping through your pop-up profile I see words like “hypocrite” and “dumbass.” Pot, meet kettle.

      • Aquartertoseven

        You still don’t understand.

No, the implication is that I didn’t know his name, obviously, and I referred to him as the black guy so people would know who I’m talking about. Considering that he’s the only black guy, I don’t see your issue.

Bombard me when their comments don’t make sense in relation to mine.

“However masochistic you present yourself as” is English, trust me.

      • scheebles

That’s cute. You went and added “as” to the end. See, that slight edit ALMOST makes it look like you were right. However, IF it had always been there then “masochistically” would’ve been grammatically incorrect. And yet you were so fervent that BOTH were correct until I actually laid out what was wrong with the sentence. Now, with your edited comment, “masochistic” is correct, but your previous assertion that both were correct is now false. And in your hasty edit, you forgot that you should never end a sentence with a preposition. Have fun with your delusions!

      • Aquartertoseven

“However masochistic you present yourself as”

        ‘However masochistically you present yourself’

        Same thing.

“You forgot that you should never end a sentence with a preposition.”

        Sure you can.

      • scheebles

Oh, pal. No, they aren’t the same thing. You’re a funny little guy. You talk about integrity, then when you’re wrong you don’t admit it. You talk about people not being able to read, and yet you can’t retain a name from an article. You’re just a little bundle of self-important contradictions.

      • Aquartertoseven

I read his name, I just didn’t remember it, as he’s a nobody to me. Always going back to this, you were so close to victory as well!

      • scheebles

So you forgot his name. And didn’t scroll up to take a quick peek. Well, judging by your stubbornness, arrogance, and just all-around lack of reading retention, I’ll buy it.

By the way, talking about “victory” in the comment section of an entertainment website? Pretty sure there’s no winner there.

      • Aquartertoseven

There’s a difference between being able to read a comment and remembering the name of a nobody. There’s also a difference between admitting a grammar mistake and admitting to wrongly calling someone a racist. If there was a black cast and I said ‘the white guy’ instead, I doubt you would have stirred.

      • scheebles

Victim! We’ve got a victim over here!

You’ve really got a hang-up about being called a racist. I honestly was not calling you one, and I’m not being facetious about that. I said you were ignorant for not knowing his name. Racism does not have a monopoly on the word ignorant. If you had said “the bearded guy” about Oscar Isaac or “the big-eared guy” about Adam Driver, I would most definitely have said the same thing. But there’s a Freudian out there somewhere who is reading your comments and thinking that you making a huge deal about it speaks loudly. Stop being so slighted and move on. Nobody called you a racist.

      • Aquartertoseven

Maybe you’re telling the truth. Then again, maybe you’re covering your tracks.

      • scheebles

If I thought you were racist (or making racist comments) I wouldn’t imply it. I’d say it.

      • Aquartertoseven

I wish I could believe you, I do.

  • Doug_101

Can’t stop looking at the picture. So exciting to have the Original Trilogy principals all back for this one. Who’d have thought we’d ever see this? Great new additions too. For all the hand-wringing about this film on the Internet, I’m really looking forward to it!

I attended a casting call (or meet and greet) with the casting director of Star Wars in St. Louis back in October. Of course, I didn’t advance! But I was wondering, since the c.d. and her entourage were touring seven cities at the time, did any random person make it?

“Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close)”
Seriously… this is the movie that was chosen to represent the great MAX VON SYDOW? Anyway, so happy to see he’s involved. Too bad there is no longer a Count Dooku. I always wanted to see Christopher Lee and Max von Sydow together.

    • http://collider.com Matt Goldberg

I chose it because I was trying to find the one I thought most people would know him from. Obviously people should go check out The Seventh Seal, The Exorcist, Marathon Man, etc.

      • pickaname

If you were really going for “recognition”, minority report would have been a far better choicethan Incredibly Loud and Incredibly Close.

Really? He got an Oscar nomination for Incredibly Loud.

Either way, I hope this encourages people to seek out more of his work.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

I loved him in Dune. He was a terrific Liet-Kynes.

      • Efjay

He was truly great in that role. Every time I read the books, I see him as Liet. Damn, I’m gonna have to watch the film again!

      • James VDB

Marathon Man? You mean Three Days of the Condor?

      • http://collider.com Matt Goldberg

Shit! I got my great European actors confused. Olivier was in Marathon Man. Sydow is also great in Condor.

  • Joseph M

Max Von Sydow – casting gold. Good to see Andy Serkis, and I hope he’s on-screen as opposed to mocap. Looking like a great cast all round. Who is that talking to Mark Hamill? MSV?

    • fatboy35

      Anthony Daniels

    • Abed

MSV isn’t in the picture, which is weird.

      • HORSEFLESH

        Why is it weird?

      • Abed

because the picture is unveiling the cast, but one of the cast members isn’t in the picture.

      • HORSEFLESH

It wouldn’t really be weird because maybe he couldn’t make it? but, truthfully, it’s not weird at all because he’s sitting beside Mark Hamill (and wearing the same shirt).

      • Ancalagon

Perhaps he is just doing a voice? But then, you’d still think he’d be there for a read-through.

  • BarneyRubbleTrouble

Marc Hamill and Anthony Daniels must have called each other before they dressed for the read.

  • Tim

Daisy Ridley could easily be Han and Leia’s daughter, and she’s sitting next to Harrison Ford on the couch – wonder if that’s any indication.

  • mattinacan

oh thank god no shia labeouf.

Matt, how do you feel about this being light on female actresses again?

    • Abed

he wouldn’t take it, he claims he is no longer famous.

  • kemo

    What about Lobot?

  • kemo

  • MoviesAreForever88

Some really interesting and great choices in there….LOVE that Oscar Isaac and Andy Serkis are part of the cast! What a shocker on the latter…but a welcomed one.

However, does anyone else feel like there are people missing?

One thing that we know for sure is that J.J. was meeting with a lot of people for several different roles….but what actor in this list got the role that actors, like Zac Efron, were auditioning for? A white, extremely handsome, athletically built role doesn’t really appear anywhere in this list of actors. Do you know what I mean?

I have to admit that, while I really like this cast list thus far, I was expecting at least one actor to be the new “young Luke Skywalker” or “younger Obi-Wan” sort of role. A role I was really hoping would go to Jonathon Rhys Meyers as one of the Solo kids (yes, I know that they aren’t following the expanded universe…but still).

On that note: I also must admit that, while most of the expanded universe should definitely be ignored, one thing that I truly believe they should have gone with is having three Solo children and one Skywalker child. The reason: Because it gives a GREAT family dynamic and also offers the opportunity for some SERIOUS drama with the temptation of the dark side, with one or more of them. With only one or none of the solo kids from the expanded universe, it doesn’t offer the opportunity for anyone to go to the dark side (which, if the character development is correct, could be amazing and devastating). We (or at least I) can all but guarantee that Han will be biting the bullet in either the first or second film. GUARANTEED. He still complains in interviews that they didn’t kill him off in the original trilogy. So it will definitely happen…its just a matter of how and when. If Han goes, there is a good chance Chewie will go, too…I would have really liked to see him go out for one of Han’s kids, like in the book. It was powerful and emotional as hell.

Now, as far as these confirmed actors; I think it’s safe to say that Daisy Ridley is most definitely the daughter of Han and Leia. Hell, they even have her positioned between the two of them on the couches in that pic. Thats not an accident. There was a rumor that one of the new heroes is going to be a female jedi…well, I guess that’s her.
I also think that it’s safe to assume that the original report that Adam Driver would be the new Sith Lord is also correct.
Other than that, its almost impossible to decipher any of the other new-comer roles….but I have to say, Domhnall Gleeson could pass for a decedent of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Word on the street was that there was going to be a “mixed race” female in that part….but maybe it went to Domhnall, instead. Who knows?

Either way, it’s looking good so far. I hope we get more casting news in the near future…because even if their aren’t anymore *major* roles. There will be plenty of smaller one’s to fill.

    • milo

Seems like Domhnall Gleeson and/or Oscar Isaac could be young Skywalker or Kenobi types. I don’t think it’s impossible that either of those auditioned for the same role as Efron just because they may not be as handsome or athletic. While there may be a bit more diversity, it’s not like there’s any shortage of white guys in the cast.

  • Werefon

LOL! Peter Meyhew is there just to make Chewie sound once in a while.

    • Rutiger Smoot

Chewies voice is from a computer combining different sounds peter mayhew was just the guy in the suit

      • MoviesAreForever88

Yes, he knows that. He was making a joke.

      • Werefon

        Don’t ruin it.

  • APrince66

Max Von Sydow and Serkis are wonderful surprises. My nostalgia feelings are growing…

  • Lee S.

As part of the current “crossover” trend, Max Von Sydow will be reprising his portrayal of Ming the Merciless.

  • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

    Andy Serkis = Mo-Cap.

We will have a CGI creature

    Matt,

DO YOU EVER PROOFREAD YOUR ARTICLES?!

    Sincerely,

  • twojawas

Is it just me or are there two Mark Hamill’s in that photo??? One next to JJ and one in the foreground. Strange

    • Marisa Erick

The men to either side of JJ are Max Von Sydow and Harrison Ford.

      • jk

You’re wrong. It’s Harrison Ford on one side of Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan on the other side.

  • Unicron

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a positive response to casting news on this site!
    tears of joy

  • Colin Christian

John Boyega was astonishing in Attack the Block,a young Denzel, this is great news, and Max Von Sydow! One of my favorite actors ever,I gotta admit, this is a great cast, things suddenly got a little more interesting.

    • The Flobbit

      Comma, spacebar.

  • Charlotte Morris

Well at least the Saoirse Ronan rumour turned out to be false

  • jb

NO BILLY DEE??!! 2.5 MILLION DOLLAR FINE

  • bleh

This is such a fake photo…everyone happens to be talking to someone and or reading their script….and R2 D2 posed in the background.

    • scheebles

lol! I thought the same thing. An exciting photo, to be sure. But elaborately staged nonetheless.

  • Strong Enough

    where’s donald sterling

  • Efjay

OMG, Max von Sydow! Whatever character he will be, he will be utterly magnificent. Can’t wait.

    • MJ

Come on, maybe 15 years ago. The guy’s like 84 now. I doubt he will be what we remember. But I do hope I am wrong.

They’s better digitize the guy just in case he isn’t with us for the second and third movies.

      • Efjay

Ageism? And what’s wrong with 84? He could easily play a senior politician, Chancellor of the Republic, a survivor of order 66 or even a Sith Lord. Of course he won’t be doing any action scenes without CGI or body doubles, and he may only be in the first movie. I am glad he will be in SW7, I can’t wait to see what character he will bring to life, and at 84 you say? Good on him.

  • The Flobbit

I’m super happy and surprised to see Andy Serkis onboard! Oscar Isaac, Domnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow are great choices. I said I wouldn’t give two rat’s asses for the movie until I saw the cast. Well congrats, JJ. I now give two rat’s asses.

They got nutty fat Fischer in this thing, but no Billy Dee??? And they add another old white guy – Van Sydow?

I am not one to usually pull the race card, but sheesh, is Donald Sterling financing this movie or what??? Very sad. :-(

    • testtest

      Oprah with Bieber

    • Plisskenman

Shut the fuck up asshole, nobody asked for your racist blackass opinion

  • ʝoe ßloggs

I felt a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of voices suddenly cried out for Lando Calrissian and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

  • enjaysim

Any truth in the rumors that John Boyega will be playing Khan??

    • testtest

      Yeah, Tom Cruise as JarJar

  • Pk

Guess I have to wait for the next movie for a better looking younger cast of actors and actresses

  • Dawn Welch

I would love to see Denis Lawson (Wedge) back somehow…

  • MJ

Serkis will not be playing Palpatine, because Ian McDermond is still alive and could play the role…heck, he’s younger by a couple of years than Van Sydow who they are bringing in. Obviously being old and fat is no issue for casting. Perhaps that should cast Matt Goldberg and me next….LOL
