STAR TREK Costume Designer Michael Kaplan Signs on for J.J. Abrams’ STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

     May 22, 2013

When it comes to Star Wars: Episode VII, even the tiniest nugget of new information is considered worthwhile.  In that spirit, we now have confirmation of who will be handling all the costume designs for director J.J. Abrams’ eagerly awaited sequel.  Michael Kaplan confirmed that he will be the costume designer on Star Wars: Episode VII, reuniting with Abrams after having worked together on Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness.  Kaplan’s impressive resume also includes the 1982 classic Blade Runner, Fight Club, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.  Hit the jump for more, including Kaplan’s statement on the matter.

Speaking with Clothes on Film (via SHH), Kaplan confirmed that he will be desiging the costumes on Episode VII:

“I am very excited to be working on Star Wars.  I’m so looking forward to collaborating, once again, with JJ.”

It’s a small bit of news, I know, but it’s definitely exciting to know that in the very near future, Abrams and Kaplan will be working together to create character designs for a brand new Star Wars film.  Elsewhere on the confirmed production side of Episode VII, Michael Arndt is writing the screenplay and Kathleen Kennedy is producing alongside Abrams and his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk.

I hope he’s able to do a good job of capturing the spirit of Star Wars costumes. For all of the prequels’ shortcomings, I really thought that the costumes by Trisha Biggar were a highlight.

    • Subspace Eddy

Agreed. The costumes were the ONLY things good in the prequels. On the flip side, i hope Kaplan stays away from the overabundance of greys, and “space-wool” that he incorporated into the new TREK movies. They really are rather unappealing.

      • Jones

        ONLY good thing? …

      • star wars is dead now with jj

the prequels were and are good, jj is going to shit on star wars like he did with star trek with his dreck, pathetic and abysmal star trek remakes!!!!!!!!

  • Strong Enough

really? whats next the Key Grip? com on lol

im pretty sure that with something that has such a huge art department, costume designer is a more significant job than key grip

      • Strong Enough

costume design is never significant. no one gives a shit

      • Wrong Enough

Design that impacts the film = no
        Your Comments = yes

      • Strong Enough

“STAR TREK Costume Designer Michael Kaplan Signs on for J.J. Abrams’ STAR WARS: EPISODE VII”

Did you really need to make that distinction? Who on planet earth doesn’t know JJ is directing Star Wars 7 at this point?

    • star wars is dead now with jj

i don’t, it won’t be an official star wars movie, so no, jj is not directing star wars, the turd he is.

Like mainstream news these days, reliably leaves a taste of vomit….

That photo of him, I thought he was Henry Fonda! And the color palette of the photo, it looks like he’s actually in a star wars film. But the style of the OT films, not the cartoony prequels with over colorful palette. What I’m saying is, I hope the new films are filmed with the look of that photo above.

Again, for costumes, I hope he doesnt make them too modern looking like the Trek films. Even though Episode 7 will be set in the future. I wanna see it decayed and rusty and lived in.

  • star wars is dead now with jj

another way star wars is going to be tainted with shit, go away jj and his crew.

    • star wars is dead now with jj

jj you already shitted and tainted and ruined star trek forever, go away and do not touch star wars.

      • star wars is dead now with jj

the 6 star wars movies are good, they do not need a phony 7th film by the hack jj to ruin the series, just go away jj and crew, leave the series alone.
