STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Rumors: There Will Be a Female Villain; John Boyega’s Character Isn’t a Jedi or a Padawan

It’s been too long since we’ve had some Star Wars: Episode VII rumors.  The wait until the trailers give everything away can be interminable,  so thankfully some fresh rumors have landed online about what we might expect from the upcoming, highly-anticipated sequel.  First up, Latino Review is reporting that the movie will have a female villain, and there’s a 50-50 chance that she’s a Sith.  The new female cast members are Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, and Daisy Ridley.  Any one of them could be Sith, and as long as the character is well-written, it would be cool to see a badass female villain become part of the main Star Wars films.

Hit the jump for more rumors, and click here to see the latest official image from the set.  The film also stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von SydowStar Wars: Episode VII opens December 18, 2015.

Latino Review also reports that even though the Empire fell thirty years ago, the Republic still doesn’t exist at the beginning of Episode VII.  Way to go, Rebels.  You can blow up the Death Star twice, but someone asks you to come up with a real form of governance, and you’re nowhere to be found.  Typical.

Perhaps the biggest news item is that John Boyega’s character doesn’t start out as a Jedi or a Padawan.  “He’s the one that has the story arc that brings him into Star Wars’ greater universe,” reports Latino Review. “It has echoes of Luke’s arc in A New Hope.”

Finally, in a minor rumor, LR says that armor similar to Boba Fett’s will be kicking around in the sequels.  It probably won’t be on Boba Fett (he might still be busy getting digested), but since the character is so popular, I wouldn’t be surprised to see armor in Episode VII based on the design.

How about Gwen Christie as a Daala-type character from the books – a female Imperial Admiral? I think that could work.

    • Kyle Chandler

Plus, she’s British. Almost a guarantee she’s a bad guy.

  • herpderp

So do I bitch or cheer that they have females in the cast now but its a villain role. Im from the internet you see and want to bitch so I am going to choose that.

    • dudeyo

I only see a reason for cheering. Who wouldn’t like a badass, menacing, amazingly well written female villain?

  • Matt Murdock

Could easily be Boba. He survived in the books (I know they aren’t taking anything from the EU).

    • AuDiOsAnE

Could Gwendoline be the bounty hunter of the ST?

  • Farrell

This news is literally more than a week old.

  • Daniel Ronczkowski

I read this last week some time on another site.

    The link does not work…

I can picture Gwen Christie as a tall, imposing admiral. She’s got the height and that forceful calm about her.

    • AuDiOsAnE

I picture her as a female version of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Go take your nice 6 month old Jaguar, your macbook, and your Auntie Allison, and drive off a cliff into the sea. Or an abandoned mineshaft, I don’t care.

Gwendoline Christie for the villain, please. She would make an imposing and bad-ass Sith.

Nightsisters would be cool. And Mandalorians are always good.

  • Kyle Chandler

It’s starting to sound dangerously close to “a young black actor is the main protagonist in one of the biggest sequels in film history”, which means this rumor has to be false…

Or awesome. It could mean the rumor is awesome. Can’t wait to find out.

How is Latino Review a thing? I mean, if there was a movie news site that only hired white people, can you imagine the outrage? I guess only white people can be racist lol.

    • Kyle Chandler

Nobody is stopping you from creating “Whitey’s Vanilla Wonderbread Symposium”. Except for the fact that I just trademarked it.

      • Redjester

That said, if you (Aqua) go away permanently or at least shut the hell up about how ‘difficult’ it is to be a white man in ‘Murica, I’m sure Kyle will give you the name for free. Call it compensation for your struggles.

      • Kyle Chandler

I’ll even throw in “Plain Yogurt’s Chalky Eggshell Jamboree” gratis.

Is that what Latino Review’s about? I always assumed it was just a coupla slackers who just happened to already be Latino who made a film site during the boom for geeks. Seems more plausable than the conspiracy option. Not that the conspiracy option particularly irks me, to be honest: there’s plenty of bulls**t sites going around. On another note: never Google ‘BET’- your principles would have a heart attack ;)

It’s hardly a conspiracy, it’s not exactly hidden, it just seems… off. Were the site called Caucasian Reviews, a lot of people would go nuts about it. I just don’t appreciate the double standards.

      • Redjester

Oh no, the minorities are given slightly more leeway than the majorities. Whoopdeedoo.

I fail to see the injustice here.

      • Aquartertoseven

Slightly more leeway? That was intended to be an understatement right? This American white guilt needs to end, you can’t be held responsible for your ancestors and hell, how many Africans and African chiefs were slave traders themselves? There shouldn’t be one rule for whites and another for everyone else, that’s ludicrous. Like black people having words that only they can say for instance. Absurd.

      • Redjester

Agree to disagree, Aqua. Agree to disagree.

      • Aquartertoseven

You can disagree all you want, doesn’t mean that a single word I typed wasn’t true.

Technically even Luke wasn’t a Jedi until RotJ.

Latino Review is a weak, and Collider definitely shouldn’t run their “scoops” (or give them hits). That site is a joke.

    • Redjester

Yet they seem to break half of the movie news scoops these days.

      • The Flobbit

Yeah…their credibility used to be about zero, but they’ve been right on all their Marvel and Star Wars scoops, so I can’t love to hate them anymore.

      • evinrude

Oh,they break at least half the scoops? Turn down your bullshit horn.

      • Redjester

Funny, I was about to say the same thing to you.

      • evinrude

Ha. Even a broken clock’s right twice a day, but half the scoops? Fuck off with that nonsense.

  • mike_thoms

I remember one of the early prequel rumors was that we would get to see all kinds of guys in Mandolorian armor.

  • eternalozzie

I always felt at the end of Return Of The Jedi like “so what?” You blew the second death star … it was a tiny fraction of the Empire and you didn’t defeat them. Like the 5 rebel ships left at the end of the movie could even take out one star destroyer more less the empire.
I swear to (insert your personal fictional deity here) if JJ builds a 3rd death star my head will explode with rage.
