Harrison Ford Set to Return to Play Han Solo in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII? [Updated]

In November, we reported that Harrison Ford was open to returning for Star Wars: Episode VII.  Today, we’ve learned that the scruffy nerdherder Han Solo will likely appear in the upcoming, long-awaited sequel.  This casting clues us in to at least a few details about the script.  First, at some point we have to see what takes place about 35 years after Return of the Jedi.  It doesn’t mean the film will begin or take place during that time, and Han Solo’s appearance may be a flashback, but if I recall correctly, there wasn’t a single flashback in any of the previous Star Wars films.  The most you got was a recording of events that had already happened.

Hit the jump for more.  Ford will be seen later this year in the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, the thriller Paranoia, and the adaptation of Ender’s Game. [Update: Trusted reporter Geoff Boucher now says that this is far from a done deal. More after the jump.]

[UpdateGeoff Boucher, who recently moved from the LA Times to EW, Tweeted that his source tells him Ford's involvement is not yet a done deal, and might not be for some time:

Though the actor's return is not guaranteed just yet, Boucher's update does confirm that Ford has indeed been approached about reprising his role.  Here's hoping he ultimately decides to sign on.  Our original story follows below.]

han-solo-harrison-ford-star-wars-7Latino Review is reporting that Ford is set to return, and I trust them because they have a good track record when it comes to scoops. As we previously reported, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher spoke with George Lucas last summer to discuss returning for the next Star Wars movie.  If all three will return (and I find it baffling that they would only bring back Han Solo, and Ford seems the hardest to get of the original trilogy lead actors), then I find it even harder to believe that the next film would only show them in a flashback.  Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope are connected by baby Luke and Leia, so it’s tough to imagine going to Episode VII, and discovering Luke, Leia, and Han are DEAD.  What a triumphant way to start off your new movie.  That should be in the opening crawl.

I hope it isn’t a mistake bringing the old cast back to play their characters. Ford is looking pretty long in the tooth these days.

    • Mark

I’m ok with that. I expect that one of the themes of Episode VII will be about one generation passing on their knowledge and experience to the next, while showing them how it’s done first. I expect Senior Luke, Leia and Han. It will bring the story to a logical place.

    You’re thinking of Bugs Bunny.

    • jk

I’d like to have a coffee & cigarette with you then make passionate love till sunrise, French cinema style.

Anyway like I said I just hope bringing back original cast members isn’t a mistake.

Hey, Douche Baggins, quite using my handle.

That awkward moment when you’ve been on the interwebs for so long that you start replying to yourself.

  • Addy

I vote for a full CGI Mark Hamill o.O

    • Tom

Come on, he’s just a little chubby. He can pull it off.

  • Corey

This would be a really cool way to bring his career full circle. I would love to see this happen.

  • RobertTC

I’d be happy to have Ford back, as long as he’s actually awake and not cashing a paycheck

    • TJ

Haha. Yeah, no. After making Indy4 he was asked by I think Leno or Conan if he kept any whips and he said he just didn’t care enough to from any movie. I’m sure several well timed elbows to the gut from Hamill will truly bring out the old Han.

  • RobertTC

Sorry about the double comment. “Invalid code” asked me to try again.

  • 2 Dimensional Mr Kippling

sounds cool, so long as he is an evolved character. He cannot be the same cool guy from the originals, it would be lame and boring from a story view and also an old Harrison trying to still act like the cool young Han would come off as pure shite! Have him as a father to some kids he has had with leia or something where he has become a more responsible character or whatever, so long as they do something interesting with the character rather than just chuck an older version of the episode 4 Han in there.

  • Derlis A. González

Han Solo will die in the first new film. Mark my words. I can’t see any other reason why Ford would agree to return.

    • Anonymous

Shoot this as-sh-ole into the atmosphere.

      • LoGan5

it actually makes sense. it will up the stakes for all the characters. and if you don’t think that harrison himself wanted to die in return of the jedi, then you’re in denial nerds…..

  • tarek

Ford is too old now. Bad idea.

    • chad vaughn

If the story calls for Solo to be old, then how in the hell is it a bad idea.

      • daveyboy

I think Tarek is just saying that a lot of fans would just like to remember Han Solo as he was and not super old. That being said, between him and Hamill and Fisher, he is the only one that looks like he is the same person. But no matter what they do, the story and execution will determine if it is a bad idea or not. I think that it would have been awesome if Lucas had done these movies in like the late 80s or early 90s because the actors would have still looked the same and there technology wasn’t at the point yet to where it would turn George into a total hack. Above all, I hope these new movies don’t look like a goddam cartoon.

  • Doug

Honestly, I think I’m okay with this. Ford wasn’t the problem with Indy 4 – it was the horrible script – so it might be interesting to see him once again as Han. I just hope they don’t go goofy with this – I wasn’t a fan of how Solo became a buffoon in Jedi.

Ford went Hugh Jackman and gave it his all in that role, I hadn’t been so happy to see him act again in years.

    • chas

Was the horrible script named Shia LaBeouf? ‘Cause that’s what I remember being the awful thing in that movie.

  • Anonymous

Not to mention he is the best looking of the three, I’d be proud if my grandpa looked and moved like him at that age, Skywalker and the chick went the belly route, all hail the king.

    • Ryan D

I hope they let the 3 know early on so they can get into fighting shape for the movie.

      • Tom

Hopefully they won’t be doing any fighting. Last thing we need is Hamill flipping around like CGI Yoda.

  • sense 11

    I hope he says yes

  • Theo

So Han and Leah have retired to an Earth location known as “Florida?” Luke and his life partner Steven come by regularly to drink strawberry tea and lounge by the pool.

    • Yotiko O Santyana

Nice – laughed out loud. And it sounds about right.

  • Strong Enough

that paycheck is going to be BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

  • Fletch Gannon

The only things I think I would miss if they weren’t included are C3P0, R2D2, Mark Hamill, and a John Williams score. Everything else I’m open to, as long as they have a very good story. (Also a Drew Struzan poster for Episode VII would be nice to see!)

Shoot those annoying as hell droids into the atmosphere.

Latino Review DOES NOT have a good track record. They’re always wrong.

Considering the loathesome attitude Ford has exhibited towards his involvement with Star Wars all these years, I’m not thrilled to see him involved. Furthermore, I’m not exactly sure why directors are feeling the need to bring old characters back. I get it that they are a touchstone to connect eras, but either recast or just don’t show them. Love Star Wars, but I wanna get out of this tiny microcosm of the universe. Expand it or don’t even bother trying to indoctrinate a new generation. They’ll still come around just watching the OT. It’s still that good.

How do you recast the un-recastable?

    You don’t!

Smart match. Harrison is still a pro.

  • Celia

Don’t do it Harrison, don’t participate in a fake star wars movie done by a fake, ugly, hack director. I hope no one from the REAL star wars movies participate in this supposed abomination of a film , the fake star wars movies.

    • Jeff Noble

Fake Star Wars? You mean the prequels. Don’t pretend that the prequels were well made films.

It’s comments like these where I think it’s a joke at first, then get depressed if it turns out to be legit. No matter what, you’re gonna be in line on opening night for Episode 7. And if it turns out to be excellent, well, then it’s crow eating time!

I just hope it’s a serious movie and not a string of set pieces and lame jokes. I don’t want a kids movie, either. At least 12A…I want to see light sabers removing limbs if at all possible. Ford is serious-enough quality for a bit part but the main cast needs to be top-drawer and a lot younger. The writing is everything else.

Correction: scruffy nerfherder, not nerdherder (although I suppose that could work as well as Han does tend to herd some nerds – like me).

  • Who’s The Boss?

I was expecting Bruce Springsteen or Tony Danza, to play Han Solo…. Not Indiana Evans! Oops.. Indiana Jones!

  • Nabi

Might as well put Willy Shatner in it too.

As long as the SCRIPT is well-taylored for Ford’s/Hamill’s/Fisher’s current AGE, it could be good…. or even great!
They should avoid writing them exactly as they were 35 years ago (e.g. DON’T put Fisher in that gold-bikini again…. PLS!) but also avoid making them feel completely different.
In other words, an OLDER version of the SAME characters.
Sounds simple but could be tricky….

To me…..the first triolgy is about the rise and fall of the first skywalker Anakin ( false phrophet ).the scond is about the rise and redemption of the skywaker twins ( Luke, Leia )….the third is about the rise and stand of the third skywalker ( chosen one ) that would end the Sith and Sith King…remember when in ep 3 that Sidious told Anakin about Darth Plagius Da White on how he could make the mediorclorians create life ?….the evil sith created Anakin but before Plagius could get him he waz killed in his sleep by Sidious ( as said in ep 3 ) and Sidious never knew about it…..the chosen one should be Leias youngest of the third..( forget books )….and forget Luke being married cause in movie world jedi dont get married..( how many times we hear emotions from Yoda, Obi-was, Qui-gon, Mace, Yoda, Yoda, Yoda ?….Leias first born..Jacen named by Han…second son Ben named by Leia to honor Ben Kenobi for his sacrifice in ep 4….then the third child dies at birth and she cant have any more…a few years later, surprise, Leia gave birth to a daughter ( Jacin ) from the force of the mediorclorians. Han is not the biological father as she is the last skywalker…..and of course Vadars student…Darth Spiden who has two lightsabers and when activated he moves them so fast that it appears he has spider legs sometimes…he is imposible to kill and only the chosen one ends him and saves the galaxy….Spiden is more evil than Vadar and Sidious ever waz..No mercy kill no matter wat…..of course i have more to tell in my storyline for ep 7 but to much to type…..just to add, how bout a space race ( like pod race in ep 1 ) except these are fast ships like the falcon racing around a planet and moons and astroids etc….the race is held in tradition to honor the fallen ones who died in the battle of endor and destrution of death star in ep 6….my titles would be…ep 7 The fallen hero…..( Han saves a city from death and is know as the title )…ep 8 Knights of a New Dawn….( Jedis trained by Luke who now must rise against a new sith army )…..ep 9 Victory of the Force….( the chosen one ends the evil sith king and his armies……

    Indy 4… mistake

But, this… I can see some fun if they put an older Han Solo on the Millenium Falcon with a group of wookies.
Harrison Ford does cranky well and this would be a great setup.
Or on a planet with Chewie’s family. Maybe Chewie has a human wife.

Solo, Luke, and Leia though, should be passing on the torch, particularly if they did not keep in shape.

Oh… and an older Luke using the Force to play tricks on Han Solo like lifting a drink out of his reach, etc could keep the cranky going.
