Rumor: Han and Leia’s Twin Children to Be the Protagonists of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

by     Posted 1 year, 73 days ago

With production on Star Wars: Episode VII expected to begin early next year, the rumor mill is churning faster.  Casting will probably begin this fall as pre-production gears up, and now notices might be leaking out.  A major rumor has arisen stating that the protagonists of the upcoming sequel will be Han and Leia’s twin children, Jaina and Jacen Solo.  Hit the jump for why this rumor might be true and why it might be false.

star-wars-jaina-solo-jacen-solo-darth-caedusAccording to Schmoes Know, they’ve picked up the following casting notice:

Storyline: Two 17 year old twins, a girl and a boy, are trained by their uncle Luke to be the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy. Problems arise when the male twin turns to the dark side.

Jaina Solo – Female, 17 years old, lead. – Jacen’s twin sister, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy, trained by her uncle Luke Skywalker

Jacen Solo – Male, 17 years old, lead – Jaina’s twin brother, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the world. A loner who is constantly struggling with the idea of what’s right and what’s wrong. Starts to turn to the dark side. Full of conviction that what he is doing is the “right thing”. Will eventually become Darth Caedus.

First off, this might be true because we independently heard the rumor that Episode VII was looking to cast a male lead who would be Han Solo’s son (our source made no mention of Leia, and neither does Schmoes Know, but it’s a reasonable assumption she’s Jaina and Jacen’s mother).  This casting report would also follow a previous rumor that the production was on the lookout for a female lead.  Furthermore, the two leads are the proper age to hit the right demographic and not be too expensive (it would explain why an actress like Chloe Moretz‘ was mentioned when director Matthew Vaughn was circling the project).

star-wars-legacy-of-the-force-wallpaperIt’s also worth noting that these two leads would allow Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford to return, but not make them essential to the plot if negotiations fall apart, although based on this logline, Luke seems more necessary than Han and Leia.

But here’s the major strike against the rumor: it’s based on an expanded universe novel, Legacy of the Force.  We previously reported that expanded universe material would not be the basis for an upcoming sequel, and that makes sense.  If you want to keep the plot a secret, you don’t have it floating around in an EU novel.  Additionally, the report that Jacen “will eventually become Darth Caedus” would never be put on a casting notice.

Keep in mind that we’re still in rumor territory, and while Lucasfilm will be controlling the release of information more than director J.J. Abrams and his “mystery box”, details will likely remain under wraps.

I hope the kids are the focus – if not this particular story, then a some story involving them. As much as I love the originals, I don’t want to have a new Star Wars movie wasted on a 70 year old Han Solo and Leia as main protagonists. Mark Hamill hasn’t aged well either, but you need him for the Jedi element. I’m not against older actors, but I am against senior citizen Jedi (unless they have the gravitas of Count Dooku) and I am against seeing some classic characters as old and decrepit for no reason.

    • yo

I highly doubt they would make Luke,Leia and Han as the main protagonist. Who would want to see a bunch of old people riding around in a land speeder to go play bingo?

    • Ramses Ávila

      Is J.J. Abrams… i don´t see that happening

They won’t be the main protagonists. They will probably appear in some awesome cameo or supporting role like Leonard Nimoy did in 2009′s Star Trek.

There’s absolutely no way that a Star Wars casting call will have anything that we will recognize as Star Wars stuff in it.

    • mambobananapatch

Roger that. In fact I’m going to revisit episodes 4-6 this evening just to clear all this horrible crap out of my head.

Sure am glad I don’t have a job.

The guy who planted this rumor could have at least tried harder. Again with the EU and the usual stuff. Be a little bit more original bros.

This website knew about this story way back in November. Dude has a serious Star Wars and serious Avatar source.

  • crackerdogsam

Hopefully the movie (if this is true) will give us a more plausible reason for a turn to the dark side than Episode III offered.

    • Nathaniel Haywood

Haha, good comment. Although I will say this, turning to the dark side to save the woman you love and your unborn child is a compelling enough reason for me (if that was the only way). The problem to me lay more in how terribly it was written and how poorly it was acted. Lucas did not script that out well, and Hayden Christensen was HORRIBLE acting out said bad script.

If we’re talking about 17 year-old Jaina and Jacen then we’re looking more at the New Jedi Order novels or maybe the Young Jedi Knight YA novels not the Legacy of the Force series. They were 30 or something during the LotF novels.
Odds are they’ll just take Luke’s Praxeum idea from the Jedi Academy trilogy and throw in teenage Jaina and Jacen.

    • Merlin235

I hope they’re in their 30s. Who is going to buy a 70 year old Han having a 17 year old? That’s just too great an age difference. They need to make them older. Maybe at least 25.

  • Herc

    That sounds so trite.

  • Tom

Two reasons that this will be the focus of the next trilogy:
They brought back Luke, Han, and Leia in their er…advanced age.
This is quite literally the perfect idea for a new trilogy/the kick in the teeth that the franchise needs.

This article fails to mention that Jacin and Jaina are in multiple Star Wars novels.

    • strider

It’s not a great idea because it already happened in the prequels and rehashing skywalker twins is nothing new.

Where’s Chloe moretz when you need her? Seriously Abrams is an idiot if he doesn’t cast her as the daughter

    • Jason Walden Rail

She would make sense as Jacen’s daughter.

Either way I still want her in the movie as a ass kicking padawan!

I love Moretz, but I keep thinking Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, and Ender’s Game) would be perfect for this, if they are truly going to have one of the leads be a young teen female. She’s becoming the right age, and, I mean just look at her: she looks like she could be plausibly cast as a descendant to Carrie Fisher and Natalie Portman. Moretz could work as a descendant to Luke’s side of the Skywalker clan.

I don’t know or care about any Star Wars stories that aren’t in the films. (Actually, I don’t care about any Star Wars stories that aren’t the original pre-Special Edition trilogy….) I’m also willing to bet that Lucas doesn’t care about stories outside his control, either, especially since he claims to have had these last three films plotted decades ago. That being said, I LOVE this idea. It’s a great way to use established characters and actors in a quality cameo way, a great way to use new talent and connect them to the material while getting a young fan base, and a way to use older characters telling younger characters stories from long ago (which then becomes the Han Solo film, the Yoda film, the Bantha film, the Bob the Jawa film, etc.) I’m still of the opinion that Star Wars ended in 1983, but this is a pretty cool idea.

It might focus on Han and Leia’s child(ren), but it’s outright funny as fuck that fanboys are gullible enough to think Lucas and Disney will give a shit about incorporating anything this major from the EU. “Jacen” and “Jaina” Solo are toast, accept it.

    • strider

Honestly, I don’t get why they would they want something that has already happened in the fan fiction literature. You would think they want something completely new.

      • Grayden

Lucas did that with the prequels and look how that turned out. Sad but true, but the Zahn trilogy is probably the best fiction out of all the EU. Now, if Lucas had the final three films planned out, or at least their stories, then I’d be curious to see what he had in his head. Otherwise, if some Disney execs had input, this whole things is going to be a complete joke.

      • strider

Well if you’re worried about Lucas, he’s not the only one involved. There will be more input from other actual talented people that know a thing about creativity.

      • ZodLovesMaude

There is nothing wrong with the prequels, stop running with the usual innaccurate negativity… Geez. The Hobbit is far, far worse of an offense…

  • Calderon

Probably not going to use them. Just start a completely new Star Wars trilogy altogether – I feel like not only the Jedi/Sith conflict has been covered in overwhelming detail in episodes 1-3 (and to a lesser extent, 4-6), but we already firmly know who Luke, Leia, and Han are. I don’t want to see a toothless version of Hamill, Fischer, or Ford “imparting wisdom” on “the next generation” – Guinness as Obi-Wan already did a great job of that in episode 4 to Luke.

Also, if there looking for and older actress maybe Gemma Arteton. I think she would do better in this role than in say Wonder Woman like some people want her to be. I don’t know why but I can picture her in the role. Maybe Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Just tossing around some ideas.

Agree that this sounds way too much like the prequels and another “ani go baddie” debacle will kill things (Yet again). The EU may have pleased hardcore fan-boys but it’s generally pretty trite material that never bettered the source, and I can see people fleeing in their droves if they smell a trite re-hash in the wind. Even the names sound, well, lame. Jacen and Jaina. Might as well go with Bert and Ernie.

Start fresh. Sure, use the kid/kids of Leia and Han if you want, but give them new identities/storylines. Abrahms definitely has the ability (More so than most who contributed to the EU) so he should just do his own thing. The biggest issue with Star Trek: Into Darkness was the rehashing of old material (You know what I mean if you’ve seen it), so let’s learn from those mistakes.

The sacked Disney intern’s “eavesdropping on a Lucasfilm producer at a fundraiser” rumour sounded decent. “…the opening scene will be awesome. Two Sith and an army of drones attack Skywalker’s Jedi Temple. Skywalker arrives, sabre swinging, to defend the temple but they get away with an ancient Jedi artifact that will give the Sith crazy power. The rest is the new kids hunting the Sith before they hit maximum charge. I hope they do kill Skywalker off at the start. Hamill’s been a real asshole about the whole thing.”
Keep in mind, this is a rumour going around certain bars frequented by alcohol-soaked writers.

I like the Idea of Luke having a big role

  • Dennis R

really? Justin Bieber? for gods sakes…bad idea for a star wars movie lol you just alienated 80% of their older fans, i’d assume, by having some ‘backstreet boy’-type playing a jedi from the dark side imho …jeez…lets sure hope thats a false rumor lmao

  • Hunter

I suddenly feel… like I no longer give any sort of shit.

  • Redjester

I second the Bieber/Gomez as the twins. And then we could have Miley Cyrus as the Bieb’s love interest, Lady Gaga as the Sith Lord, & Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift as the wise “older” Jedi masters to help round out the cast.

…In all seriousness, I think Saiorse Ronan and Nicholas Hoult would be ideal for the twins and would signify that the creators of this “new” Star Wars franchise are taking things seriously.

    Make it happen!

  • kemo

I certainly hope not. I hate non cannon EU crap. It’s so terrible. I tried to read the Zahn books and they were cheap rip offs and ohhhh sooo boring. please reboot with original good writing, and do please cast unknowns not any of these hollywood bratz!

Do not focus too much on this. An old disciple of Sidious comes back to wreak havoc on the Repblic and the new Jedi order. Who is this “old disciple”? We know of only three. Maul, Tyrannous, and Vader. Since Count Dooku had his head removed, and Anakin is redeemed, who’s left? Maul is alive…resurrected in the Clone Wars. Since Lucas daughter wrote the story, and he came back right before the Disney announcement, I await them to announce Ray Park being signed to play in the movie. Then the cat will be out of the bag.

Sidious saves him and freezes him so in the event of his demise, Maul could ressurrect the Sith order. Wait and see. No more Jedi falling to the dark side…it’s been done. Overdone. Luke would be prepared for that when he trained the new Jedi. Darth Maul becomes the new Sith Master, learns new powers…possibly on Korriban, and builds a new Sith threat from the remnants of the old imperial army. It would be amazing.

i think it would be cool if instead of instead of being a long long time ago it could be in the present. i mean they have if they better technology than earth a long, long time ago what type of technology would they have now? also it would cool if had like more people than a jedi in it (like 4-6 did) except like more characters like a exile clonetrooper thats joined the republic and also there should be main characters on the dark side to like Darth Vader except not Darth Vader and a more main character. also one of Yoda’s species should be the main character… because Yoda is boss
