With production on Star Wars: Episode VII expected to begin early next year, the rumor mill is churning faster.  Casting will probably begin this fall as pre-production gears up, and now notices might be leaking out.  A major rumor has arisen stating that the protagonists of the upcoming sequel will be Han and Leia’s twin children, Jaina and Jacen Solo.  Hit the jump for why this rumor might be true and why it might be false.

star-wars-jaina-solo-jacen-solo-darth-caedusAccording to Schmoes Know, they’ve picked up the following casting notice:

Storyline: Two 17 year old twins, a girl and a boy, are trained by their uncle Luke to be the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy. Problems arise when the male twin turns to the dark side.

Jaina Solo – Female, 17 years old, lead. – Jacen’s twin sister, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy, trained by her uncle Luke Skywalker

Jacen Solo – Male, 17 years old, lead – Jaina’s twin brother, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the world. A loner who is constantly struggling with the idea of what’s right and what’s wrong. Starts to turn to the dark side. Full of conviction that what he is doing is the “right thing”. Will eventually become Darth Caedus.

First off, this might be true because we independently heard the rumor that Episode VII was looking to cast a male lead who would be Han Solo’s son (our source made no mention of Leia, and neither does Schmoes Know, but it’s a reasonable assumption she’s Jaina and Jacen’s mother).  This casting report would also follow a previous rumor that the production was on the lookout for a female lead.  Furthermore, the two leads are the proper age to hit the right demographic and not be too expensive (it would explain why an actress like Chloe Moretz‘ was mentioned when director Matthew Vaughn was circling the project).

star-wars-legacy-of-the-force-wallpaperIt’s also worth noting that these two leads would allow Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford to return, but not make them essential to the plot if negotiations fall apart, although based on this logline, Luke seems more necessary than Han and Leia.

But here’s the major strike against the rumor: it’s based on an expanded universe novel, Legacy of the Force.  We previously reported that expanded universe material would not be the basis for an upcoming sequel, and that makes sense.  If you want to keep the plot a secret, you don’t have it floating around in an EU novel.  Additionally, the report that Jacen “will eventually become Darth Caedus” would never be put on a casting notice.

Keep in mind that we’re still in rumor territory, and while Lucasfilm will be controlling the release of information more than director J.J. Abrams and his “mystery box”, details will likely remain under wraps.
