The great thing about the current state of social media is just how fast and readily available information has become.  So, for projects that are highly anticipated and equally highly guarded – like, say Star Wars: Episode VII, for example – we’ll take info where we can get it.  Today’s unconfirmed rumors on the new Star Wars installment from director J.J. Abrams include evidence in support of a late 2015 release date, along with a casting call sheet that describes two of the film’s lead roles.  Hit the jump for more.

First up from Dennis Barbie - Director of Retail and D2C @The Walt Disney Company The Netherlands, and unfortunately named @Barbieguitar on Twitter – is possible unofficial confirmation of a late 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII.  (Hat tip to Patrick Keuris, Managing Editor at, The Dutch Star Wars website.)

#StarWars,Saw today some awsome first features/plans of new StarWars 7 movie coming end 2015. #Disney studio role out.
[name redacted] at this moment it is planned for end of CY15 but in the entertainment business you will never know. Might be some changes there.
It’s likely going to be a bit before we hear any official announcement on the release date as the filmmakers and Disney’s distribution team are in disagreement over just when the film will be ready.  Also in the murky realm of obscurity is just who will be cast in the surefire blockbuster.  The latest rumor puts Chiwetel Ejiofor in the running, but a new casting call gives a description of two of the younger leads (via Jedi News):
Take all of the above information with a grain of salt.  We’ll continue to bring you Star Wars news as we receive it, but until the Mouse House decides to grace us with some official announcements, keep a healthy dose of skepticism on hand.  Be sure to check out all of our previous and continuing Star Wars news here.

Is it me or is all these rumors of a casting call for really young actors slightly worrisome. I don’t really want to see a Stars Wars film with teenagers as the main characters.

    • Devin Reed

Luke and Leia were both 19 in A New Hope.

      • Brian Grochowski

Mark Hamill was around 25 and Carrie Fisher was around 21. I know Luke and Leia are very young in A New Hope but I don’t think they ever really pointed what age they were until the prequels came out. I don’t know.

      • Aaron Sullivan

But the characters were not, right? Also, film franchises are planned in trilogies so they need to stay youngish for ~4 to 6 years. Also, if the original actors come back there will need to be a youthful offset. :)

The original novelizations put Luke’s age at 20 for A New Hope and 23 for Empire Strikes Back. For some reason the prequels decided to cut a year off.

    • 80sRobot

The sequel trilogy will focus on a new generation as it should. Luke, Leia, Han and maybe even Lando will make appearances in minor roles. Among them, I predict Luke will be the most pivotal to have appear in Episode 7. Han could be saved for Episode 8.

  • Internet Savior

Josh Holloway for the 40 year old military type

  • Bob

Chloe Grace Moretz for that role is fucking perfect. Make it happen!!!

    • Bob

I mean imagine a casting announcement saying the cast so far is Chloe Grace Moretz, Dane DeHaan, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. That would be fantastic.

      • rhizomeman

I would actually prefer unknowns – like it was in ANH with Hamill, Fisher, and Ford. It helps make the characters more believable.

      • Bob

Well imo, the people I mentioned are not Brad Pitt and Johny Depp. Or even like Jenifer Lawrence. There all on the level of Fassbender except maybe Moretz who is known more cause Hit-Girl is extremely known, but that’s all she is known for really so seeing her branch out would be accepted imo. Cumberbatch and Ejiofor are now gonna start to finally being recognized, but this would solidify it. And, DeHaan is not to well known at all, he may be more known I guess after TASM2, but not to huge. At this day and age you can’t have complete randoms, look how that turned out for Last Airbender. I know M. Night trash directed it but that cast did not help one bit.

      • Sweet Pea

The people you mentioned are extremely well known. I agree with the gent above, this film needs some relative unknowns to succeed.

      • Bob

They are def not extremly well known. Ur on a movie website…of course you know those actors. But I speak to friends all the time about actors like Fassbender, Ejiofor, DeHaan, and Cumberbatch and there like “Whats a cumberbatch?…wait that guy from star trek?” Or “Whos fassbender, never heard of him? While seeing the councelor trailer…” Also DeHaan and Ejiofor?? Please…I had a friend tell me why did they get that “random guy” for 12 years instead of denzel washington or will smith. I was like the cast is amazing it has fassbender as well and once again..there like whos fassbender again? And DeHaan forgot it, only movie buffs know him by name (for now).

      • Sweet Pea

You seem to have a lot of movie casting discussions with people who have no deep interest in film!! Random… lol

    • 80sRobot

We know that Saoirse Ronan auditioned for a role where she used a lightsaber. Moretz has said that she hasn’t auditioned when people asked her if she did.

      • Christian Leroux

Yeah, but she also said that basically everyone has auditioned for the role. She’s just one of the names that stand out. I could see her though in the film. I wouldn’t be disappointed if she was.

      • 80sRobot

I speculate Ronan said “everyone has auditioned” as a feeble excuse when she suddenly realized during the interview she probably shouldn’t have said as much as she did. While this may be true, she is the only well-known actress who has even admitted she has auditioned. What I find interesting are the facts that it appears she was asked by Disney/the producers to audition, and that she was asked to fiddle around with a lightsaber. Ronan may not have understood how culturally significant Star Wars is.

  • Bob

Dane DeHaan for the other role please as well.

  • altechi

    Must be beautiful/Must be handsome……..

Also, just curious, how do they decide if someone is “smart”

    • Janeails22x

The handsome and beautiful “musts” are very troubling. This is why Hollywood is superficial and unfair. So much talent is passed over because of looks. Only is the role is specifically written for a fugly character do certain people get a chance. It’s disgusting and it perpetuates the very core of American hypocrisy: hire me for my looks, not my talent.

      • axalon

“This is why Hollywood is superficial and unfair”

Unfortunately, life is superficial and unfair. It happens all the time and not just in Hollywoodl. Not really a whole lot anybody can do about it.

      • MichaelRWorthingon

LOL…so you think this is an “American” thing? You are clueless. IT is called human nature and genetics. And beautiful people are cast because that’s what we want to see (and will pay to see) as an audience. I know you aren’t capable of understanding the obvious but I tried.

      • alk

While I wouldn’t go as far as saying ALL of Hollywood is superficial…I’d agree with most of what you’re saying. Unfortunately, if they had been casting Star Wars: A New Hope with this “MUST BE HANDSOME” guidelines, do you really think Mark Hamill would have been casted? I mean he’s a good looking guy, but to classify him as “handsome/disney’s version of SEXY” I don’t think he would have even cut the top 10 shortlist. I really hope handsome is just a filtering method to weed out the “desperates” who just want to be in star wars for name sake and waste the casting director’s time and energy. That’s what I’d like to hope.

  • tarek

beautiful, handsome and athletic… They are filming “The Bachelor the movie” ?

    • Sweet Pea

Yeahhhhh coz I’m sure George Lucas didn’t care at all if Luke or Han were handsome or athletic at all when they were cast.. The role of Han Solo would’ve gone to some ugly fat guy if he’d had the acting chops lol

      • tarek

What if the guy is not ugly nor handsome ? a normal guy like you and me ?

      • Sweet Pea

I am extremely handsome. Its obvious now that you are approaching this story with some personal non-handsome bias…

      • tarek

        Prove it! ^^

      • MEY

        I’m handsome, too. And athletic.

        Come on, get together! :)

        Let’s make a Star Wars movie. :D

      • Sweet Pea

Well I didnt want to seem boastful, but I am also athletic. I used to run 100m in 11.9secs in my heyday… I’m up for this handsome, athletic story in a galaxy far, far away if Tarek is?

      • MEY

Minden tökéletes. Most már csak az hiányzik, hogy érts magyarul is.

      • tarek

lol. Ok You’re the guy we are looking for.

  • emit8

They had casting calls much earlier this year. Guess those didn’t yield any results obviously

  • emit8

They had casting calls much earlier this year. Guess those didn’t yield any results obviously

    • 80sRobot

This call sheet is only for two roles. Maybe they have already filled, or narrowed the choices, for the others.

  • Seanpb

So, essentially they’re looking for a new Leia and Han…

  • 80sRobot

Parsing what these role descriptions could mean — obviously the names “Rachel” and “Thomas” are placeholders:

The description for Rachel makes me imagine she grew up in the underbelly of Coruscant. What happened to her parents? Murdered by the Sith? Could she be related to Luke? Is this the role Saoirse Ronan auditioned for? (Or did she audition for the other young female lead?)

    • Sweet Pea

      You have a vivid imagination.

  • wolverqueen

Sounds like a goofy comedy… and please, please not Benedict Cumberbatch for any role. I’m sure he is a lovely guy and all that, but his presence and look are so annoying on film.

    • alk

You and me both. Keep Benedict in STar Trek…far far away from Star Wars. It’s bad enough we have JJ. Abrams directing it and that’s as close to Star Trek as I’m tolerating. If we start having JJ Abram actor cameos, and Star Trek puns and jokes, I’m gonna fucking scream.

  • Jamesy

Open castings are being held around Glasgow, London, and Dublin according to various UK news sources. According to BBC they are looking for “street smart and strong” orphaned girl in her late teens and a “smart capable” man in his late teens or early 20s”.

Doesn’t anybody else think this sounds kind of janky that Disney is throwing open casting calls for two roles in a major blockbuster? Seriously, any Jane or John (who are young and beautiful) can just waltz right in and audition before a panel of casting judges? Don’t production companies of major movies go right to the major casting agencies and conduct these auditions privately?

    • whiskey_river1

No. They’re looking for unknowns. Which makes me very happy.

  • alk

This casting sheet sort of worries me, most notably the descriptions. It was obviously written and typed out by some low level production associates who clearly weren’t chosen for their writing or analytical skills. Their descriptions are just as shallow as you can get and hammy. If I hadn’t known already this was for Star Wars…I would have easily believed it was for any run of the mill drama set in wherever whenever with whoever. If these character descriptions are any sign of the shallow thought put into these characters, I’m gonna be really disappointed with the new film’s leads, no matter who the actors are…

    • hgalln

They are looking for brilliant unknowns, therefore, they don’t want their casting call to be discriminating or intimidating in anyway to people who have little to no acting experience.

  • Disney sux

Why keep posting star wars news on the new phony hack star wars movies? The news keeps proving that this will be an epic fail and embarrassment.
