All Six STAR WARS Films to Be Re-Released in 3D Starting in 2012

All of the Star Wars films will return to the big screen — only this time, in 3D.  We’ve been hearing rumors about this for awhile now, but THR now confirms that George Lucas will milk the franchise once more by releasing new 3D conversions of the films beginning in 2012.  The plan is to release all six films — starting with The Phantom Menace — in the early months of 2012.  Depending on how well The Phantom Menace does, each subsequent Star Wars film will be released in order at the same time each following year.  It will supposedly take that long between each film because, according to Lucas, each conversion takes at least a year to complete and to perfect.

Given that it’s Lucas we are talking about, the director will then probably release the 3D versions of the films on DVD after the theatrical re-releases are done. Hit the jump for my thoughts about all of this and why I don’t think it will be that big of a success for Lucas.

star_wars_propaganda_poster_joe_corroney_unite_stormtroopersI’m extremely curious to see how this is all going to work out.  If Lucas was planning on re-releasing the “original trilogy” in 3D, then I’m sure that a ton of people would go to the theater to watch them (myself included).  However, Lucas is starting off with The Phantom Menace.  I, personally, can’t see people lining up outside of the theater to watch The Phantom Menace in 3D.  Can you?  Since the release of the following films depends on the box office gross of The Phantom Menace, I wonder if we will really get to see A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back get their theatrical re-releases in 2015 and 2016.

Another thing to keep in mind: all of these films will be post-converted.  So far we’ve only seen nothing but bad post-converted 3D films.  It will be interesting to see how the 3D in these films will turn out.  Anyway, will you be lining up to go see all of the films? Only in Opposite Land is Episode 1 the best.

Podracers, Darth Maul, and giant sea creatures in 3D? I will be one of those people lining up to see Phantom Menace.

the difference between this retrofitting and the retrofitting of “Clash of the Titans” and “The Last Airbender” is that they’re taking their time with the process rather than squeezing it in a few weeks before the theatrical release. Remember, James Cameron himself, the modern master of 3D, is retrofitting “Titanic” right now and says as long as it’s done carefully, takes its time, and has the director around to supervise, it can work quite well.

No way I’m paying to see Phantom Menace.

The first film to be released in 3D could be Star Wars Episode -2: Jar Jar’s CGI Extravaganza…..and the masses would still show up in tents.

Just as long as they play the Christmas special before the movie start so at least i feel i got my moneys worth.

  • Carraciolo

It will be a huge success because, whatever we older fans think, Lucas has been able to set up a whole new fan base with the Clone Wars. Kids who were born roughly at the time of TPM’s release, are now being introduced to Star Wars awesomeness and will drag their parents to the movies.

  • Andy247

    Fuck off Lucas… fuck off.

To answer your question, NO…Hell No. LOLz!

With crappy post-production 3D, their journey towards the Dark Side will be complete.

I think the timing on this is a bad move.

THe original trilogy fans will probably go see this (Maybe), but to start with Phantom Menace and release one a year? That’s 6 years, man. That puts us in 2018. 2018!!!!!!!! 8 YEARS FROM NOW. The original Star Wars will be 41 years old. Will 3D even be what it is now by then? With technology moving so fast, it may be something completely new rendering 3D obsolete.

I can understand all six released in 2012, but, regardless of the success of the Clone Wars cartoon, I think after Revenge of the Sith, most fans got burned out on Star Wars.

I was the biggest fan…but now I just sigh and shake my head. Maybe its because I’ll be 42 when they are done releasing these and it MAKES ME FEEL OLD

Wow you put it in perspective. I’ll be 40 when it’s all done. Wow. I am old. Thanks for the reality check. haha. I’m still going to take my kids to see it. They are die hard fans.

    • nobblin

who will be left to see this when the world is reduced to a smoking crater?

  • pqsk

I will be watching this for sure.

Of course I will, my only regret is they’re not releasing them once every week, but I don’t see how this wouldn’t have success

In the time it takes to get to the 3D Version of The Empire Stikes Back he could have filmed 2 Moves in native 3D. Perhaps even made re-made Phantom into a real movie and not a big toy advert.

    • RudinFilargo

this is why the mayans predicted the end of days in 2012

  • poopnoop

I will be seing this. Darth Maul is great. I really liked Episode 1. I just don’t see anybody going to see Episode 2. Episode 2 was the worst Star Wars film.

Hell, why not just make episodes 7,8,and 9 instead of this. And while filming for those, make it in 3D instead of shitty Post conversion.

  • Thomas040

it may just be my notion… but I think he’s setting up the new generation for another trilogy to be released in 2018… mark my words: May 18th 2018, Star Wars Episode VII – Rise of the fallen.

  • Stanley

Just skip the first 3 and go to the originals already? I wanna see Boba Fett in 3D

i would see Phantom Menace 3D if they included the Rifftrax

  • Gerry_hansolo

another titan disaster? i dunno, based on experience, anything not shot in imax 3d ain’t worth converting to 3d magic expectations…..

  • Lyff22a

Go ahead and start with Phantom Menace. It probably won’t look that good, but by the time they get to New Hope the 3D-ifying process should be “perfected” resulting in a considerably improved product.

  • Jolyonpeters

i wasnt being sarcastic. I, like many others DID enjoy this movie a lot and dont see why some bad mouth george lucas about it, all the movies, especially the prequals, were all great pieces of escapism and isnt that what movies are meant to be?

    • Tahiri Veila Fan Forever

I know what you mean when you talk about people saying some really rude things about Lucas. I loved every single movie! And there are a LOT of other people who did too. So I wish people who don’t care for any of this would just be quiet. :/

  • Tahiri Veila Fan Forever

I am absolutely going to see every single one!! My whole family, and all my friends are super duper excited about it!!! I. Will. Most. Certainly. Be. Lining. Up. Outside. The. Theatre!!! I’ll be there super early!! I WILL get a good seat!! I grew up with Star Wars. I literally was born watching Star Wars and I am NOT giving up any oportunity to see the best movies ever on the big screen!!! I know for a fact that we will be seeing them more than once. :) And I’m annoyed at people saying the George Lucas is just doing this for more money. People have been asking for this!! Begging, actually!! Star Wars fans want more Star Wars. Period. So I’d really like it if those of you who have only bad things to say about my fav movies to please not utter your rude comments. And I’m only saying this because I’ve seen a bunch of REALLY rude comments on the internet so far. :/ What you “older” and “original” fans do not get is that there are bajillions of kids and us teens who are going to see this. Did you hear me? BAJILLIONS. So you potty mouths who are dissin’ Lucas better just shut your mouths. >:P

Frankly I just want to see the old, first Star Wars Films (4,5, and 6) in theaters. 3D or NOT. I just hope that Phantom Menace doesn’t flop so that they’ll actually finish the saga. I do wish we didn’t have to wait five years for the older ones to be released!

I will go to see darth maul to be honest. He was a badass. I would’ve loved that movie it he killed jar jar too. That would’ve been sick. I wish he lived through episode 3 so we could see a vader v maul duel. That would be sick. If they were to make an episode 7, I would bring back darth maul. Say he was in a 30 something year long coma frozen in his age in episode 1. Have him duel luke and lukes apprentice. He was with out a doubt the best villan in star wars, vader is a close second.

Giant flop……what a waste of time, why don’t they make more star wars movies and make them fantastic, instead of focusing on the ‘new’ old crap…..4, 5 , 6 are miles above what they’ve released in the prequel. People will not see the phantom ‘flop’ menace in 3d. A crap movie is a crap movie.
