Guys, we watched the new Star Wars trailer a lot. Like, really a lot. Lucasfilm announced on StarWars.com today that the third and presumably final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was viewed more than 112 million times online in 24 hours. And that’s not even counting folks who tuned into Monday Night Football to watch it on their TV, which brings the number up to 128 million.

But you may be asking, how much is 112 million really? Well, the very first teaser trailer for the film, which debuted in November of last year, hit 55 million in its first 24 hours, and the second trailer hit 88 million views in 24 hours. So if you were wondering if Star Wars really needed another trailer since everyone’s gonna see it anyway, there’s your answer. Of course the movie’s going to be huge at the box office, but Disney doesn’t just want “huge”. They want an event of epic proportions. I’m curious to see if this means we’ll be hit with an onslaught of TV spots in the month leading up to release, as Disney did with Avengers: Age of Ultron, a movie that also presumably had a built-in audience that didn’t need convincing to show up.

The Mouse House already has some indication of just how big the movie will be, as pre-sale tickets for first-day showings have been selling out all over the world. Interestingly, though, Movio Media announced today that the demographic makeup of ticket buyers has been predominantly older males. More specifically, the audience of pre-sale buyers is 70% male between the ages of 18 and 49 years old, with an average age of 34. They regularly go out to see movies once a month, more than 67% go within release week, and they are described as “tentpole supporters”, ie. they like franchise films.

Those numbers make sense when you think about the generations that have the most invested in this franchise. That’s not to say teens won’t be seeing The Force Awakens—they turned out for Jurassic World so they damn well better be seeing Star Wars—but those that are the most passionate about seeing this movie as soon as humanly possible are folks who were alive when the other films came out or were more prevalent in pop culture.

Of course this demographic doesn’t take into account men buying tickets for their entire families, so I expect to see plenty of kids at those first showings as well. Regardless, the takeaway here is a boatload of people watched the new trailer, and a comparable boatload of people will be turning out on December 17th to see the movie in theaters.
