The first poster for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D has gone online.  It’s a weird poster that seems to come from an alternate universe where The Phantom Menace was good or, at the very least, people enjoyed it and want to see it again.  Also, in the alternate universe, Yoda is fascinated by Darth Maul’s buns of steel.  That’s right, Yoda.  The Dark Side has a gym and you’re not allowed to join.  Find somewhere else to work on your glutes.

Hit the jump to check out the poster, which demands you “See It on the Big Screen” even though we already fell for that trick.  Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D opens February 10, 2012.  The trailer is expected to hit next week attached to The Three Musketeers.

I’ll give the marketing people credit. They’ve successfully identified the least terrible bits of this movie and put them on the poster. The characters with the most screen time are nowhere to be seen, though. That says quite a lot.

    • Hiro the Eighth Samurai (and 14th Assassin)

I’m with you. The poster looks much better than the movie. The movie (3D or not) is an awful movie, and not just for a Star Wars movie. I tried to watch it again a few months ago, and I couldn’t get past the first 20 minutes or so.

It’s just so bland and almost pointless. There’s no main character.

It’s too bad they didn’t make Obi-Wan the main character through the prequel trilogy. Just doing that would have improved the prequels a whole lot. In Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan is almost the main character. And as Sith ends, he almost seems like he’s the main character again.

Too bad Lucas danced around that possibility. I’ve written stories and scripts myself, and it just seems the Star Wars prequels were just crying out for Obi-Wan to be the protagonist.

In Phantom Menace, he’s barely part of the action. There’s that long stretch following the opening and stretching almost all the way to the Darth Maul battle, where it seems like he just sits around or tags along and does little next to nothing.

Luca$ is a second rate writer. the first star wars was probably a stroke of luck.

  • Tarek

Why didn’t they have designed the Blu-Ray box set this way, instead of those ugly scribbles?

  • ShawnMR

Looks fake, is this the confirmed poster? The source link has no information…just the picture.

    • ShawnMR

      Also, where is Qui-Gon?

If this is really official, I can’t remember a poorer piece of marketing material for this franchise.

      • Tarek

A poorer piece of marketing ? You didn’t see how ugly is the Blu-Ray box set…

      • Hiro the Eighth Samurai (and 14th Assassin)

        I agree Tarek.

That cover for the complete saga is awful. I have to wonder, just how much time or effort did they put into it?

      • El Alto

Effort!? hahaha. You really think George Luca$ puts effort into anything anymore? You still bought it, right?

  • Rev. Slappy

Where are Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd???

    • Tarek

With or without Jar Jar, the Prequel is awful.
      Midiclorians ? Really ?
anakin baby killer ? really ?

  • Brett

I hate myself for knowing I’ll be at the movies on February 10th. Perhaps all the fanboys will show up and we can all boo the movie together as we give it more of our money.

    • Tarek

It is not your fault. Luca$ must be practicing voodoo…

  • Ringbearer1420

    Give the whore his money.

  • VALENTINEproductions

star wars needs to seriously die already. why do u people keep wasting ur money and time?!

  • Mr. Me

I’m going to see this, because I know I’m going to have FUN.

I can understand why people don’t like the prequels, but why are people so vitriolic about EVERY PIECE of Star Wars news these days? Give it a rest and watch movies that you think are better instead of complaining about “Luca$, wah wah….” Jeez.

  • kemo

I’ll gladly see it. It’s just a movie not a religion

  • Richard

    Baby’s First Photoshop.

    • mil

      So true…

  • Tol

You just know Lucas himself chose this poster from many others he could have. And not one of them dare tell him it was the worst of the lot.

  • Dodge_hickey

    I am sick of everyone complaining…..if it’s not the 3D re-release, it’s the blu-rays

I am not a fan of the changes or the prequels but we all know people will show up to see these 3D re-releases…the blu-rays broke sales records!

I consider myself a rabid fan of Star Wars but I still agree with the majority that there are way too many underwhelming elements in PHANTOM MENACE. But you have to agree the film contains 2 mind-boggling, awe-inspiring sequences, and one of those is probably the greatest sword/saber fight scene in history of cinema. Lucas is a visionary filmmaker who excels in constructing action sequences but not a complete package like Spielberg or even James Cameron. Agree?

    • LiamH

Uhhhh, no. The movie had okay action don’t see what you find so great about it.

      • Don

You can’t seriously say that when Darth Maul turned on his double-lighstaber, and the music changed to that epic chorus, a chill didn’t run down your spine. Seriously, the battle between Obi-wan and Qui-Gon vs. Darth Maul was one of the best lightsaber battles in the Star Wars and one of my favorite action scenes. If they made Darth Maul a recurring character, I would’ve loved the prequels even more. Yes, Episode 1 isn’t as great as the original, but it is definitely the most underrated of the first three prequels. Attack of the Clones was worse.

And Podracing, well, that scene was just sick.

    • Nick

The greatest sword fight in the history of cinema is Inigo Montoya vs. Wesley. The Duel of Fates is #2.

  • LiamH

They’re obviously trying to show off the 3D aspects with this poster but it’s still so bland.

  • DC-Tiki

Can’t understand the love for this photoshop 101 lacklustre effort. This poster is a travesty, got nothing on the masterpieces Drew Struzan made for Lucas throughout the Spec Editions and the initial prequel releases. However the poster’s quality now matches the film’s, so I guess it’s fitting after all.

  • FILMfan

I can’t wait to see the contrast in revenues between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy. Here’s our chance to show Lucas how much we loathe the prequels. I sincerely hope that everyone will avoid them like the plague. Let’s face it, 3D ain’t gonna make them any more palatable. Thanks, but no thanks Mr. Lucas. I’ll keep my money this time round.

  • Andrezituu1
