While all eyes are understandably on Star Wars: The Force Awakens to breathe new life into the Star Wars franchise, we actually got our first taste of new original content under Kathleen Kennedy’s Lucasfilm last fall with the debut of the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Created by Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni, the show takes place five years before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, when the Rebel Alliance is still a small, secretive grass roots campaign and the Empire is very much in control.

Much to my surprise, the show absolutely won me over. Its tone perfectly toes the line between playful and sincere, with just the right mix of heart, action, and humor to make this a winning entry in the Star Wars saga.

Today at Star Wars Celebration, the first trailer for Star Wars Rebels Season 2 was revealed, and clocking in at 3:30 it provides a hefty look at what’s to come. Most notable is the addition of Darth Vader as a primary antagonist (with James Earl Jones providing the voice), as well as the return of fan-favorite character Captain Rex from the animated series The Clone Wars. As a Star Wars layman I don’t know much about what’s going on, but it sure looks fun.

Check out the Star Wars Rebels Season 2 trailer below, via Lucasfilm. An exact debut date has yet to be set, but the series will likely return sometime this fall on Disney XD and is expected to boast a significantly higher number of episodes than the 16-episode Season 1.
