After dominating the opening weekend box office with $238 million domestic and $529 million global, Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues its domination of the cinema space. As announced today by Disney, the film from director J.J. Abrams has surpassed $300 million at the North American box office in record time, which means a few things.

One, The Force Awakens is now the swiftest film to break this milestone; over the course of five days it earned approximately $324.5 million, bringing its global tally to $689.4 million. To help put those numbers in perspective, Jurassic World, currently the third highest-grossing movie of all time (though, that could easily change), broke $300 million in eight days time. $37.3 million of Star Wars’ earnings came in from Tuesday screenings alone, which brings me to the second item…

The film stole the record for highest Tuesday gross from The Amazing Spider-Man by 7%; the Andrew Garfield-led flick’s Tuesday earnings record was $35 million. The Force Awakens has been snagging records left and right with even the Jurassic World team congratulating Lucasfilm on its success — even though the film stole its record for biggest opening weekend of all time. It’s crazy to think of just how big Episode VII might actually become.

No disrespect to Jurassic World or Furious 7 — their successes are nothing to scoff at — but if they can have such massive debuts in 2015 and snag the third and fifth spots on the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time, then The Force Awakens will probably surpass them. The question is, will it now best the top dogs Avatar (currently the highest grossing movie) and Titanic (the second highest)? With such speed and intensity with which the film has risen to box office power, it’s a definite possibility.

So hang tight because it seems like we’ll be keeping track of this trajectory in the weeks ahead. For more on The Force Awakens, peruse our recent links below:
