Star Wars: The Force Awakens cannot be stopped. The J.J. Abrams-directed sequel continues to ratchet up the box office charts, and as of today it has officially passed The Avengers to becoming the fourth-highest grossing film on the domestic chart with only $1 million and change to go before it surpasses Jurassic World. Indeed, with a total domestic haul of $652 million in just two weeks in release, there’s little doubt that The Force Awakens will be one of the biggest films in history.
But that #4 title will be short-lived. This weekend, the picture will overtake Jurassic World’s $652.2 million and Titanic’s $658.6 million domestic totals to become the second highest grossing film in history, with only Avatar’s $760.5 million domestic gross left standing in the way of the crown. Can it surpass that Avatar number? It’s a milestone in and of itself that the movie is besting Titanic’s 18-year-old #2 slot, and given that there are still many, many weeks to go before Star Wars leaves theaters, that Avatar number seems very do-able.
So how are things on the worldwide chart? Well at $1.33 billion the film currently holds the #8 slot, having just surpassed Frozen’s $1.27 billion gross. Next up is the $1.34 international total of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and then Avengers: Age of Ultron’s $1.4 billion take, which should fall pretty quickly. The real numbers to keep an eye on are Titanic’s $2.18 billion and Avatar’s $2.78 billion, which hold the #2 and #1 slots respectively. Jurassic World holds the #3 position on the worldwide chart, but at $1.66 billion it fell far short of touching even Titanic’s gross. However, given how quickly The Force Awakens has been raking in the dough, $2 billion is in no way a pipe dream. And with the film still yet to open in China, there’s a whole new run of potential box office dollars waiting to roll in.
Stay tuned, folks. This ride is far from over. If you’re curious, I’ve included the all-time Top 10 charts as they stand now for both domestic and worldwide grosses below.
