You’ve no doubt watched the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer a couple of times now.  The teaser is a fantastic introduction to the J.J. Abrams-led new era of the saga, and as with all good teasers, this one has left us with a lot of very exciting questions.  The film’s release is still over a year away so it will likely be a while before much of the story is illuminated (and thankfully so—the less we know going in, the better), but there are still some reasonable assumptions that can be made from the very brief footage gleaned in this debut trailer.

After the jump, we break down some of the major points of the Force Awakens trailer and try to addresses burning questions like why is John Boyega in a storm trooper outfit?  What’s Oscar Isaac doing in a fighter ship?  Isn’t that new lightsaber incredibly dangerous?  Speculate along with us below.

Why Is John Boyega in a Storm Trooper Outfit?

The first thing we see in the trailer is an image of Boyega wearing a storm trooper outfit.  This raises a number of questions, but the obvious answer to the first (why's he wearing it?) is that he’s in a storm trooper outfit because he’s working some kind of reconnaissance mission.  If you’ve been watching Disney XD’s surprisingly solid animated series Star Wars: Rebels, you’ve seen the titular characters go on a number of covert operations within the Empire, so it doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility to think that our new hero is undercover.

Or maybe he’s a defector?  Which leads to another glaring question: what happened to all the clones?  We learned in Episode II: Attack of the Clones that underneath all of those storm trooper helmets was an army of clones, based off the DNA of Boba Fett’s father.  Has Episode VII done away with the clone storyline completely?  Did the Fett Sr. clones all get old and die, leading to an army of non-clones?   If so, why wasn’t the clone technology reissued?  We don’t know!  But we’ll find out next December.

Is That Droid Playing Soccer?

The trailer also introduced us to a new droid, which appears to be riding some sort of soccer ball.  Obviously the new Star Wars film had to include some new droids, and this one has a fun design plus international market appeal.

Is Daisy Ridley Riding a Flash Drive?

We also see the film’s other lead character, played by Daisy Ridley, riding a new speeder vehicle that looks kinda sorta like a flash drive.  It’s a neat ride and she certainly seems like she means business in this particular scene, so it’ll be interesting to find out what has her in such a rush.

Hey Look, It’s Llewyn Davis!

Not really a question, but it’s really cool to see Oscar Isaac in a Star Wars movie.  The guy is massively talented, and look, he’s playing one of the good guys!  It’s unclear from this shot whether he’s a Jedi, but might he be filling the role of a sort of military-type commander?  It was previously believed that Isaac was playing a supporting role in the film, but he’s billed fourth in the official cast list so maybe he has a bigger part than previously thought.  That would be very welcome news.

Who Is That Cloaked Menace and Will He Chop His Fingers Off?

The trailer also gives us our first look at the film’s villain, though his face is not revealed.  It’s widely believed that Adam Driver is playing the principal baddie for this new era of the franchise, so it’s certainly possible that this is his character.  We can see that he’s got a really nifty new type of lightsaber that features a cross-guard—though since this cross-guard is made of lasers and not metal, I’d certainly be afraid of accidentally grazing a finger or two across the stream.  “Safety First” applies to Jedi and Sith alike.

Who’s Driving the Millennium Falcon?

The iconic spaceship is back in fine form, and it’s certainly great to see the Millennium Falcon in action again.  We do know that Harrison Ford is in The Force Awakens, but we don’t know for sure who’s driving his ship in the “money shot” from the trailer.  This is a wonderfully executed sequence, though, and it’s really cool to see the Falcon flying in the atmosphere as opposed to in space (side note: all of the shots in the trailer appear to take place in planetary atmosphere, not space).

Who Is Providing the Voiceover?

Contrary to rumors that began spreading right after the trailer hit, the actor providing the ominous voiceover narration is not Benedict Cumberbatch.  It is in fact confirmed cast member Andy Serkis.  With regards to his character’s allegiance, his words are rather ambiguous.  It’s easy to imagine that voice belonging to either an old shaman-type Jedi or an age-old Sith.  Which is it?  We likely won’t find out for a very long time.

Is That a New John Williams Score?

Yes, yes it is.  Confirmed by the official Star Wars twitter account, this trailer features all-new music composed by Star Wars veteran John Williams himself.
