We’ve been hearing quite a few rumblings lately about the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer debuting sometime fairly soon, but it turns out the teaser might be arriving much earlier than anticipated. Like, next week earlier. Director J.J. Abrams and co. wrapped production on the upcoming Episode VII a few weeks ago and the film doesn’t open until theaters for over a year, but this is one of the most anticipated movies in recent memory, so it’s no surprise that Disney and Lucasfilm are keen on giving a brief first look to fans a bit early. If a new report is to be believed, the first footage from the Star Wars sequel will arrive Thanksgiving week in the form of a Force Awakens teaser trailer. More after the jump.
Word of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer release date first surfaced over on reddit. Obviously an anonymous reddit post isn’t exactly the most solid of sources for this kind of thing, but the since-deleted post read as follows:
For next weekend only (not sure if it’s Fri/Sat/Sun or just Sat/Sun) a 90 second trailer for the new Star Wars will appear before every single showtime for every single movie at 100 theaters nationwide. I don’t know exactly which theaters (except for one). Word has it Disney told all theaters getting the trailer that Big Hero 6 had to be the earliest showtime for each day (assuming that the fans will all buy a ticket to the earliest showing possible).
This is all well and good but again, we can’t just blindly trust an unsubstantiated report from reddit on something as big as the Star Wars trailer. However, Peter over at Slashfilm now says he has heard from other independent sources that the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer will indeed debut in a limited number of theaters over the Thanksgiving weekend, adding some significant credibility to the timeline of the trailer debut.
Obviously we’ve seen our fair share of Star Wars rumors since the new film was announced so there’s still no guarantee that the Force Awakens trailer will absolutely debut next weekend, but it would be a pretty solid strategy for Disney to take advantage of the moviegoing-heavy holiday in order to introduce Episode VII to audiences at large (and also ensure Big Hero 6 is playing in a prime position if the details in the reddit report are true–synergy!).
Just this past week, a rumored description of the Star Wars trailer landed online, so it’s quite possible that we could be able to ascertain the validity of said report by this time next week. Again, nothing’s confirmed and Disney/Lucasfilm’s strict “no comment” policy on all things Star Wars won’t help illuminate this issue any further, but it would be pretty neat if our first look at footage from the new film was coming in a matter of days.
If the aforementioned release strategy is indeed implemented, I imagine bootleg video of the trailer will be online within a matter of seconds, so I’m hoping that Disney also opts to release an HD version of the trailer online as well. I’d rather not have my first impression of this new Star Wars era be in the form of a shaky video recorded on someone’s iPhone.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18, 2015.
