Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox have set February 10, 2012 as the date for the 3D re-release of George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.  We reported back in September that Lucas plans to re-release all six Star Wars films in 3D with a new 3D post-conversion due out every year.  I can’t wait to find out how this does at the box office.  My guess: the first three will flop and the original trilogy will do fine.

Hit the jump for the official announcement.  Also set to open on February 10, 2012 is the thriller Safe House starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, and the romance flick The Vow starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum.

Here’s the announcement via the official Star Wars website:

Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox announced today that the 3D theatrical launch of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace now has an official release date – February 10, 2012! Set against the thrilling and exotic backdrop of a “galaxy far, far away,” Star Wars is perfectly suited to the immersive 3D theatrical experience, and Episode I delivers some of the Saga’s most stunning and spectacular sequences – from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi. Supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.

Couldn’t they have waited till after the Mayan calendar ended so no-one would be alive by the scheduled time of the first airing?!?

Sounds great…my son will be old enough by this point to actually sit and enjoy it.

But I digress, I don’t think I want him to see the “new” trilogy first. I’d rather him watch the original.

    Jar-Jar in 3D

    Winning!

    NO THANKS

The first three will flop? Give me a break. Despite I & II being pretty terrible, people will still turn out in droves for this. Idiots love 3D, and the notion of seeing ANY Star Wars film in 3D will give millions of people massive nerd-boners.

I will never spend another dollar on those prequels. 3D or 7D i don’t give a shit.

im probably gonna go see this, just to get a gage on the quality of the 3d which im hoping is good.

Well, as much as I hated Phantom Menace, soooo much, there are actually sertain things I did love about the film, and DO want to see in 3D.

The Podrace was awesome in 2D, so 3D should be incredible. The Maul fight of course, and some of the Battles.

However, I truly hope and pray that Lucas spends more time fixing the horrors of the prequels, than he did on the OT and this 3D.

Never thought I’d say this, but Lucas, TINKER AWAY!!!! Pleeaaassee!!!!

Get rid of horrible puppet yoda/Jar Jar/Anni’s dialogue/Boss Nass and Droid speach.
Fan Editors have done it repeatedly with great success, now lets see what you and ILM can do!

Not to mention, a sertain tollerance has built up over time for TPM, in a way. It has its charms as much as its offences. But getting rid of most of those could go a long way into getting into fans good books.

The Clone Wars series for example is FANTASTIC! And is better than all the prequels put together.

    Sense 11 – HAHHHA!!!! I agree!

Seriously, can anyone say “Cash Grab”? Is there a record for how many times you can keep re-releasing a movie? I mean when I was growing up “Star Wars” was the shit! Now, I hate this franchise not only because the prequels were so far off the originals in both tone and quality (and of course simple movie magic) but because of how much all SIX of them are being jammed down the public’s throats. I mean shit, enough is enough! Even Trekkies settle for what they have!
